Gangs of London attack

PSP News | Lots and lots of facts about the PSP's version of The Getaway, along with purdy screenshots.
'Gang' and 'street' games seem to be the new black, with new offerings sprouting up on a regular basis. The latest is Gangs of London on the PSP, the handheld sequel to the PS2 The Getaway games. Funnily enough, the game is set in London, with a number of different underworld gangs fighting for supremacy over various nefarious activities and areas. You can play as a member of each of these five different gangs - the Pakistanis, Triads, Cockneys, Yardies and Russians - too.

Gangs of London has a seemingly odd mixture of main game modes, making it somewhat unique amongst the plethora of similar games out there. The main mode though will see you choosing to lead a gang of your choice, and perform various missions in order for your gang to prosper. In the missions you will be able to control your entire gang, to, switching between different gang members and issuing commands to others. Of course, the missions change depending on the gang you choose, which gives the game a lot of potential replay value.

There's also a 'Gang battle strategy mode', which is oddly advertised as a 'turn-based affair'. Here you get a map, and can move your forces in either an offensive or defensive fashion. There are even different 'strategy cards' to give your team bonuses. It seems bizzare for this sort of game, but when hooked up with three other PSPs, it could be an interesting concept.

If all that that wasn't electic enough, there's also an 'American tourist mode', where you, obviously, take on the role of an American tourist and scour the streets of London for good photo opportunities. Succeed, and you unlock some secret stuff.

But wait, there's more. You can access different pub games (darts and pool, along with others, judging by the screenshots) from the main menu for a quick blast if you aren't up for the main game.

Then there's more stuff in the game sharing mode. Each PSP will generate a different tube level with content and mission objectives differing depend on the serial number of your PSP. You can than transfer this between different PSP consoles for play. It seems incredibly ambitious, and we're curious to find out if it actually works.

No shortage of goodies for Gangs of London, then. Let's just hope it turns out better than The Getaway games did. The first screenshots are available in the media panel. There's no official word of a release date yet, but we'd anticipate sometime this year.

I don't mind picking it up if the Pool game is good. Otherwise I'll pass... not a GTA fan
