Rockstar and Thompson exchange blows

PSP News | More sniping between GTA developer and anti-videogame critic.
It's certainly nice to see that Sony and Microsoft aren't the only ones in the industry capable of petulant bickering.

Step forward Jack Thompson, Miami-based lawyer and fervent critic of videogames, who has accused Rockstar of portraying him as a 'bisexual paedophile' and a 'sexual pervert', after the developer - which, judging by the radio stations that feature in GTA games, does a nice line in irony - placed a none-too-subtle hoax email on its new website for PSP game GTA: Liberty City Stories.

The spoof email that's riled Thompson appeared two days ago on the site, and comes addressed from from 'JT@CitizensUnitedNegatingTechnology'. In it, the imaginary author writes about how, 'The Internet is an unambiguous evil. The only things worse than the Internet are computer games and liberals.'

'Only last week,' it continues, 'I was using the Internet to look up some information for my 15 year old niece, who is a keen water skier and state wide sailor. Trust me when I say this - searching under the subject matter "Teenage girls water sports" is not for the faint hearted.'

It's hardly surprising that Thompson is a target for Rockstar's ire. After all, the lawyer recently led the outrage that followed the 'Hot Coffee' debacle, and has been a vocal critic of Rockstar's GTA franchise for some time now. True to form, he wasn't about to take Rockstar's latest dig lying down.

In an irate email to US site GamePolitics, Thompson wrote that, 'Take-Two/Rockstar has created and paid for an actual Internet website for the purpose of furthering the notion that its most abiding and most effective critic, Jack Thompson, is himself a sexual pervert. When you click on the fake email [on the Liberty City Stories site], you will find that JT (Jack Thompson) likes to surf the Internet for pictures depicting deviant sex acts by teenage girls.'

'Additionally,' harrumphs Thompson, 'There is an audio ad at the site featuring a man whose name is 'Jack', who is found naked by a mother in her son's room. Bisexual paedophile Jack Thompson is the combined message.'

Neither Thompson or Rockstar has commented on the latest session of 'handbags' since, but as soon as either does, we'll be there like the gossipy fishwives we are to deliver the scoop.

That's just really immature behaviour from Rockstar - if you have an issue with somebody or something, you take them or it on face first - how can you expect respect otherwise?

Clearly, the people at Rockstar have no idea how NOT to act like a bunch of juvenile's...
I don't by any means support the anti-videogame line that Jack Thompson is pushing, but he doesn't deserve this level of slander.

Rockstar... you don't know when to stop, do you?

^ I agree that Rockstar are being quite borish and imature, however people like Jack Thompson are an easy hit because of their own 'limited' view.

True, Rockstar should have been the 'mature' people in this case but if they didnt slander Thompson someone else would have, and then we'd be talking about them.

Frankly i think that the hard nose anti-gamers should have a brain scan to make sure all their beans are firing, and get off our backs.

I actually read that on Rockstar's website a few days ago, and found it pretty funny. Personally I didn't connect 'JT' to Jack Thompson. I think he's jumping the gun a bit. It was obvious bait and Thompson has been caught hook, line and sinker.

There's nothing that can be said that could be considered "too much" where "JT" is concerned. Burn the bastard to the ground. Figuratively of course...

I actually praise Rockstar for doing it, especially after all the crap they have received in the recent years. As far as I see it, this isj just Jack using anything to his advantage in order to take Rockstar down. This isn't an issue about what is right and wrong content in video games, this is a personal issue and frankly it is about time it is stopped. Considering the bastard won't stop, this is the second option. Laughter is good, as are jokes. If taking the piss out of him is what is necessary, than so be it.

it's also not the first time an artist (yes, i'm taking somewhat of a poetic licence calling a video game company "artists", but if directors of movies can be called it, so can game directors, regardless of what you think of either end product) has inserted a parody of a critic into their piece of art.

unfortunately nothing specific comes to mind, but i know of an architect in Germany who was so upset with the council in his town, he carved their faces onto the demons which adorned the eaves of his house.
