Five PSP games we wish were coming for the PSP

PSP Feature | Will our PSP dreams come true?
The reason that you own is system is because you want to play the games that are on it. The PSP is only just starting to take its place in the market but that doesn't mean we don't expect anything from it. Sure, we got EA games and titles like GTA, Burnout, Devil May Cry and Gran Turismo have already been announced and are on the way, but what would we like on our lovely new shiny portable system.

#5: A Platformer: There are a couple on the system already, like Ape Escape: On the Loose and Death Jr. but from all accounts, it's nothing substantial. Daxter from Jak & Daxter has already been pigeon-holed for his own game so now maybe they'll put Clank from Ratchet and Clank on his own?

The main issue with 3-D platformers is that the camera is always going to be an issue. So why not make some traditional 2-D platforming action. This would be perfect for a Castlevania title, possibly a sequel to the legendary Symphony of the Night

So what do we want: Castlevania

#4: A Fighter: The PSP is would make excellent console for tradtional brawlers. The controller layout is good enough to harbour any of the modern fighting game’s needs. With the only title currently available being Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower, it makes us a little weary that there really aren't that many titles in the works. Well if the GBA is good enough to get a Tekken game and if the DS good enough for Soul Calibur(apparently) than the PSP is as well.

Mortal Kombat: Deception and Street Fighter Alpha are on the way. However, a Tekken, Soul Calibur or even a Virtua Fighter would make us very happy. The fighting genre deserves to be as well represented on the PSP as the racing genre has been so far.

So what do we want: Tekken, Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter (either or all)

#3: A shooter title: Coded Arms took a shoot and looks like it missed. The only other confirmed titles on the way are the gritty Western-themed Gun and the oddly intriguing Infected. What looks to be the major hurdle with this type of game is the control scheme, a second analog button is sorely missed.

However, the much chastised Metroid Prime control scheme would probably work reasonably well for the PSP. Sure, we're not going to see Metroid on the PSP(well, not legally) but some originallity and wireless internet play will go a long way.

Still, a lot of us were still able to enjoy Goldeneye and Perfect Dark with the solitary analog stick, so there is no reason why either a Metroid-style or a truncated traditional control can’t work.

So what do we want: Metroid! Well OK, that won't happen but anything that will satisfy our need for destruction on the go with friends will do fine.

#2: An action game: Sure, Metal Gear Acid is cool, Dynasty Warriors is OK, Dead to Rights sucks, Devil May Cry and Crisis Core are in the works though a long way away and you’ve got a few games that have cars mounted with machine guns and rocket launchers. But something that’s been really missing from handheld gaming, primarily due to system limitations, is a good and honest action game.

With the PSP, the advent of a proper action title is actually possible. Just so long as the developers are able get around the controller, camera and the fact that we’d also like to blow up things on the go. Something that you can just tot around with some sort of destructive weapon and create a bit of anarchy, or even to sneak around in a conventional stealth manner. Liberty City Stories may just be the way to go, then you’ve got all your inevitable franchise knock-offs of the future but hey, we’re sure someone’s got something substantial planned for us.

So what do we want: Dante, Snake, Sam, Kratos, Marvel heros/villains or just about anyone that doesn’t blatantly look to knock off a franchise or two.

#1: A Tradtional Square RPG: The name Playstation was built of the Square title of Final Fantasy and Enix originated Dragon Quest and many other RPG's. When Nintendo lost them, they lost a hell of a lot of market with as well. But why haven't we seen them (let alone any traditional RPG) on Playstation's little brother?

Mind you Japan have a fair few but there aren’t really any that have been scheduled as definite for a western release (that are worth paying attention to, mind you). Since it looks like Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII will not fit into this category, Advent Children isn’t a game and the actual playable offerings look meagre, I think we’re entitled to be a little worried. The question is, where the heck are my RPG’s?

Honestly though, given that RPG’s have historically found a home on handheld consoles and on Sony systems, I guess you can think that with the PSP, the sky’s the limit! Could Cloud be the PSP's prodigal son, or could it even be Crono?

So what do we want: Final Fantasy VII–2/spin-off, the sequel to Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross or any other traditional turn-based RPG from Square. We’ll take them all!

I'm gonna sound like a broken record here, but it sounds to me like you want a DS!

1)You want a 2D Castlevania like Symphony of the Night? At the end of the month on DS! Dawn of Sorrow actually looks better then SotN graphically.

Not to mention you can play 3 GBA games that fit the description on the DS as well.

(DS also has two major 3D platformers already too).

2)I didn't know about it, but you mentioned yourself that Soul Calibur is coming to DS! So that's fighters.

3)You want a Metroid shooter? Enough said.

4)Action games - you may have me if you mean 3D action games. DS does have splinter cell though, despite the quality.

Although if you can count GTA as action, I'd say you can also count Kirby, Nanostay, Yoshi etc. Action is a slippery definition these days.

5)RPG - Square has announced almost exclusive support for the DS - Eventually. Final Fantasy 3 and Crystal chronices are the big names, but they have 10 other games in development for DS.

There's also gonna be Advance wars very soon (strategey - close enough) Mario and Luigi 2, and Lunar. (Note: the PSP lunar game is a port and won't make it out of japan, but the DS lunar game is new and is announced for PAL territories).

-------------------------------------------------------

Funny though, apart from the shooter and possibly RPG catergories, most of these would be better suited to PSP - fighters espescially. Now that would be a great portable game - Tekken 3 with better graphics on PSP!

If only one of the companies had put six face buttons (and in sony's case a better d-pad - it's just no good for rolls since it has those stupid gaps in it)) then I'd finally be able to play Capcom fighters on the go. SNK should be good though - how about it, SNK playmore? If they release, say, a fatal fury collection on PSP(or even just Garou or Real Bout Special), or King of Fighters '97, and it's a good port, that's a system seller for me. Although the d-pad is still an issue....

oh Mario & Luigi should be good.

The Metroid was a joke, plus i thought the Metroid Prime control scheme would do well given the PSP set up

Yeah I know. But you see what I mean? espescially about castlevania etc.

yeh i know what you mean, though a lot of people are commenting on the representation of genre on the PSP and I believe these are the ones that need a bit of attention.

In effect, DS has a better representation probably because of the experimentation

DS needs better Racing games though.

I agree on the RPGs and Actions as they are the big draws of the handheld at the moment.

While if I was preparing a list for NDS at the moment I would be making sure action and RPG get the focus as that's what it is lacking at the moment. As my brother keeps pointing out the only games out are puzzle or beat that score type games.

I wouldn't mind a Disgaea type game on the PSP or NDS though I remember mangaman pointed it out that Strategy games feel more comfortable in handheld format and I tend to agree.
