Death Jnr. Preview

PSP Preview | The mascot Sony needed?
Something that Sony has always seemed to lack was a steady flow of mascots for their systems. While one may argue that it hasn’t hurt them, they’re going to have to do something about it to compete with Nintendo in the handheld stakes. The Game Boy and now the DS are dominated by numerous mascot/franchise titles that have a strong foothold unlike any other. Yet now it looks like Konami will be sending a saviour to the promising PSP.

Death Jnr. is a 3-D platformer, based upon an entirely original property that's been in development for the PSP since before the system even had a physical form. Originally scheduled for the machine's launch, the title has obviously suffered delays. Hopefully, they will result in a top notch game.

The basic premise behind the game is that you play as Death Jnr. - the son of Death. Other than his unique heritage and his large scythe, Death Jnr. - the first skeletal videogame protaganist we can recall since Manny Calavera - is just like your average kid. He goes to school and has his own little group of friends. One day on a school trip to the museum, one of Death Jnr’s friends, Pandora, attempts to open a box that she shouldn’t. Ahem. After failing to do so, Death Jnr. steps in to help, only to have an evil force unleashed that sucks up the souls of his friends, and so begins your adventure into the demented world of Death Jnr.

While it may seem that the game is aimed at the younger audience, it couldn’t be further from the truth. Death Jnr. is set to bring a new form of morbid humour to the table. Just one look at some of the supporting characters and you’ll see why. The game's visuals are in full free-flowing 3-D with a hint of cel-shading. The artistic style resembles a bit of a mix between The Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice, and PALGN's of the opinion that there are certain people whose tastes will be satisfied more than others.

Death Jnr., as mentioned, is a 3-D platformer. In keeping with the theme of staying away from the norm, Death Jnr’s main way of getting around will be by using his scythe. Uses include latching onto hanging branches and flinging yourselves off them, and using the scythe like a helicopter blade. It should make for some interesting moments. However, it is not yet known whether you will gain more abilities as you go or fixed abilities from the beginning.

Naturally, rescuing souls is not an easy activity. Apart from the obstacles, there are bound to be many enemies along the way. And of course the scythe will be your primary form of defence (or attack). However, Death will receive a wide arsenal of firearms to aid him on his adventure, everything from handguns to shotguns and explosives. Since you’ll have to deal with both ground-based and winged enemies, you’re going to need all the firepower you can get.

The idea so far is good but there are a few areas of concern. There have been some rumblings about control inconsistencies and a problematic camera. Since the PSP lacks a 2nd analog nub, controlling the camera will obviously be a touchy issue. Another concern is whether this game will suit the portable format.

Death Jnr. is scheduled for a mid-August release abroad with a PAL release currently scheduled for late October. Given the time in development and Konami’s experience with platformers, we have confidence that these issues can be somewhat resolved before the actual launch.
Overall:
There is enough here to suggest an enjoyable game and a worthwhile experience. The camera can make or break the experience though, and the style looks to be a bit of an acquired taste.

looks pretty cool

personally i disagree that Sony needs a mascot... the thing that annoys me most about nintendo is their over-reliance on Mario...

"we got this great game, but don't know how to market it..."
"stick mario in it and call it Super Mario <Insert Game Genre Here>"

it really annoys me... especially when as time goes on, "Great Game" is replaced more and more frequently with "Mediocre Game"

... And then they're ruined and no-one likes them. Mario Tennis? Mario Baseball? What's next, Mario DDR? Oh, wait. icon_neutral.gif

If I must be on topic, I'll say the game looks just like all the other scratchy-graphic'd cheap PS2 platformers.

The worst part with the Mario games is that they actually sell well

Its for the PSP so I doubt it'll be cheap icon_shifty.gif

no i'm not saying that all Mario related games are bad... just the seemingly automatic using of Mario and Co. is a bit excessive...

i just don't think Mario is required in most of the games he's in... the sports series for example...

they could have made a new franchise called "Everyday Tennis/Golf/Baseball/Soccer/<insert sport here>" and just had stereotypes or simply cartoon people and with the engines they used, would've been great games in their own right...

adding Mario to it doesn't increase it's appeal to me...

but Death, Jnr looks good icon_smile.gif

(woo, think i got it back on topic... time will tell...)

EDIT: changed "could've" to "would've"

Erm.... Mario Tennis (N64) just happened to be the best tennis game ever (the GCN one was good too, but I haven't got it yet). Mario Golf is incredible. Mario Baseball seems to be quite good too....

Writing off games because they have Mario in them is just as bad as buying them just because of a name.

It annoys me a bit too. then I play them and realise they're awesome.

Anyway - other companies are way worse. How many Crash and Spiro games are there now, for example? And Capcom just clicked over 50 megaman games!

And remember - after 20 years, there are still only seven core Mario platform games. The spinoffs keep te name alive for the great main series.

^ who are you quoting?
the only person with "because" in their post is you...
(Never mind, you changed yours before i got mine up)

as for Crash/Spyro... the majority of those games could be considered core games... just the quality has deteriorated...

as for 50 Megaman games... just by putting "Mario" into Gamefaqs i'm getting 29 games on the Gameboy, GBA, Gamecube and DS alone... for some reason NES, SNES and N64 aren't returning results...

and there is only 1 Mario Party game returning, and 1 Wario game returning...

i think that the spinoffs of Mario are tainting the name, rather than keeping it alive... rather than releasing Mario related "merchandise", release the 8th core game already...

i agree that writing off a game in this manner is wrong... but people are doing it... you implied you've done it yourself... i think the time has come to stop using (abusing?) mario in this way...

Mario Party is a valid example. I was just pointing out that Mario Tennis and Golf are not. They're an arcade take on the sports, and wacky characters are probably the way to go.

Who else do you put in them? Original characters, espescially a large cast, could take ages, and have limited results. Most new characters of that sort in recent years I have found lacking - eg Banjo, ratchet, daxter, crash (shudder...) etc.

The only other option is licencing, which Nintendo used to do, and do well. Popeye Tennis? Snoopy Golf? Maybe that's the way to go?

Anyway, my annoyance was past tense. What I meant was, all you have to do is play most of the Mario spinnoffs for an hour and it makes sense. Except Party. I wish they'd stop that! (and while I don't 100% agree, I'll give people Double dash, too.)

Oh yeah, my point about other companies being worse was way off in both directions. I just checked, and Capcom have actually just clicked over the 100 megaman game mark, not 50. And good old Rock was never as strong a mascot as Mario. As for spiro etc, the point was that there are just as many games but they are lower quality.

PS yes, the quoted 'because' was a mis-type.

Anyways.....back on topic....

Death Jr could be a 3rd party mascot? We used to have those, remember?

i don't really know what to suggest, because i agree that (most of) the mario spinoffs are excellent quality and great games in terms of playability...

i just don't see they needed the Mario characters... for the sport games especially, i think original characters would have been a better idea... only 1 set is needed, use them every time a new sport is given the Nintendo treatment... and call it Nintendo Sports... or (my previous suggestion up there ^^) Everyday Sports or something...

some of the games do work better with the Mario crew... the Mario Karts for example... but not everything Nintendo produces has to contain the same core characters

---------------
on topic...

i also don't think Sony's way of doing things would encourage me to allow them to use a character i designed as a mascot... we've already mentioned Crash and Spyro... look at what happened to the games they were in later in their careers...

My off-topic senses are starting to niggle a bit at the back of my mind!

And as for Death Jnr., it just looks like any other platformer to me. It could be a good game, but reading (most) of the review, nothing seemed to stand out that made it sound worth waiting for.

'Erm.... Mario Tennis (N64) just happened to be the best tennis game ever'

Nah, Virtua Tennis was better for my money. Different take on the sport of course, but I played far more four-player Virtua Tennis than four-player Mario Tennis, decent as it was. Sega's game just had an extra layer of depth to it IMO. Will agree with you about Mario Golf though, particularly the N64 version. The time me and my friends wasted on that...

Damn i didnt know there was a topic dedicated to mario bashing-and under my very nose it twas!

*whips out stick and hits everybody but David*

The fact that most of you have admitted, is that regardless of if mario is in a game where he doesnt just 'belong', there STILL excellent games and better for it too.Id rather play as mario or DK in some golf game then a guy named 'Harry"(yes you could play as no-names OR mario characters in the n64 mario golf.Let me guess how many times i played as a non nintendo character.......hmm........a fat old zero).

Nintendos mario and pals gives games, and genres of games, a 'spark' that otherwise would have otherwise been fine gameplay wise but devoid of any connection to the characters, any 'SOUL'.

I dont care if they release a 'Mario Horseshoe throwing advance' game, as long as its good ill buy it and be happy.

Absolutely right! icon_lol.gif
Come on, Mario's a fat plumber. He really shouldn't be competing in sports titles. They should have created a new set of characters to handle that kind of game, and kept Mario in the platformers.

Of course, agreeing with you and others on the first point too... the Mario sports titles are great in their own right, it's just unnecessary for them to contain Mario.

I can't think of anything to say on-topic. icon_lol.gif

if only the latest Franchise Mode came out before this article... then we'd at least be on topic...

trying to steer it that way... is this made by the people who made the Medievil games? it looks like it's similar from the small amount i've seen on this title, but since there is a PSP Medievil game as well, makes me doubt it...

(unless the original makers of Medievil broke away from the original company and have nothing to do with the name but are making a competing product... Blizzard/Guild Wars style...)
