Indeed, American consumers seem to have taken especially well to the sleek portable console. As well as the 2.74 million PSP units shipped to the US and Canada (with 1.51 million sold through), the company's proprietary UMD movie format has also enjoyed some success there, where 4.3 million UMD films have shipped (a statistic that includes the 1 million copies of Spider-Man 2 which were given away with the first batch of PSPs). 7.3 million games from the 48-strong PSP catalogue have also been sent to stores.
The figures were revealed by smug Sony executives at the PlayStation Summit in Tokyo, who also announced that Japanese and other Asian stores had recieved 2.33 million PSPs (with 1.4 million sold), along with 3.9 million games. The UMD movie format has suffered in Japan though, with a meagre 400,000 UMD movies sold, all of which were copies of Erotic Terrorist Beautiful Body.*
All up, about 2.9 million PSP consoles have actually been sold through to consumers.
Sony refused to comment on the number of PSPs imported to European and Australian shores, because importers are very, very naughty.
* Possibly not true.
