We're huge fans of the Burnout franchise, so when we heard that the title would be making its handheld debut on the PSP, we couldn't help but get excited (and that's an understatement). EA picked up the publishing rights to the Burnout franchise last year, and whilst we were worried the game would suffer, it turned out to be one of the best games of 2004. Burnout Legends is the title of the PSP version of Burnout and it's completely different to the upcoming Burnout Revenge, so strap in and belt up; we're about to go headfirst into a truck.
Whilst a lot of titles published for the PSP seem like quick cash-ins or PlayStation 2 replicas, Criterion have been developing Legends to be like a "best-of" Burnout title. Classic tracks, cars and modes will be making a return, with some cars returning from the very first Burnout.
The game will feature the largest number of gameplay modes ever seen in a Burnout title, with a total of nine available, which include Crash, Burning Lap, Road Rage, Pursuit, Eliminator, Time Attack and Race. Two new additions to the mix will be the Legends Face-Off and the Legends GP. The Pursuit mode was noticably absent from Takedown so we're pleased it has made a return.
Legends will feature a total of twenty five unlockable cars. We also wouldn't be surprised if that total rised, as EA are being very secretive about the game. Remember that famous green car from Burnout 2? Well it's back, and looker better than ever.
The real emphasis (like a lot of PSP titles) will be on the multiplayer aspects of the game. Criterion have included full Wi-Fi support, and a large amount of multiplayer options. If you meet someone with only one copy of the game but another PSP then you can play head-to-head with only one UMD. Whilst the modes will be a little stripped down, it is appreciated nonetheless. This should make Burnout Legends the ultimate multiplayer title.
EA are optimising the game so that it is just as enjoyable in a quick race as in extensive races. The loading will hopefully be the best we've seen in a PSP title yet and the game should stream well off the UMD.
Burnout Legends also boasts some incredible graphics, with Criterion pulling out all of the stops to get the most out of Sony's handheld. Due to the smaller size of the PSP screen the game should look very close to its Playstation 2 counterpart, and EA are aiming for a solid 30 FPS, which is a bit of a downgrade from the fluidity of the console version, but Legends could still be one of the greatest looking games on the PSP.
Burnout Legends will be available on the 19th of September, PALGN will be covering the title, so expect a review around then.
