PSP2 officially announced

PSP News | At last, the facts arrive.
After months of rampant speculation, Sony has finally confirmed that a successor to the PSP will be released this year. Thanks to our very own Shadow Wave from the forums, who quickly spotted the information on IGN.

For the time being, the PSP2 will go under the title of 'NGP' - meaning 'Next Generation Portable'. Up until now, some rumours have been true while others have been absolute garbage. Today, we can give you the real facts about Sony's latest console.

We haven't been informed about a price or a release date, but presumably Japan will be favoured ahead of everyone else. It's quite possible that Australia won't see the NGP until 2012. That's enough rambling for now, here's what you wanted to know. Remember those Universal Media Discs? They've been abandoned. Instead, a brand new format is being used for the NGP. Flash memory-based cards have been chosen solely for the purpose of developing new software. There isn't a whole lot more to say about the new direction taken here, except that Sony plans to enhance the format in order to give developers more freedom.

Visually, everything has become a bit more streamlined and accessible; the introduction of two analogue sticks immediately improves the layout. A multi-touch pad is based underneath the console, while a multi-touch screen replaces the poorly lit original. Sony wants players to "touch, grab, trace, push and pull", which appears to make use of more advanced technology compared to Nintendo's equivelant - the 3DS.

Cameras are located at the front and rear, the device is 3G compatible and also includes GPS functionality. Here are the specifications, ready for your reading pleasure. We'll bring you more information as soon as we have it.

^ Same here. DS Lite is a perfect fit for most pockets.

PSP-NGP? Yeah, no. And we don't all carry backpacks and satchels all the time.

Sony fail!

Not sure why everyone's banging on about the size so much. Does anyone here honestly cram a DS Lite in their pocket?
Yes, why wouldn't I?
You guys have big pockets...

+1

Best thing about jackets (especially blazers) is just how many damn portable devices you can fit in there. I remember putting my DS Phat, PSP, 6 carts, two boxed games, a CAS calculator and all of my stationery in there and still having room to spare.

Wow, and I only could fit wallet, phat DS and a mobile phone in most of my coats O.O.

However, I remember my high school years when I made a hole in my school blazer just so I can hide my mobile in it and it was so roomy I placed all my stationary in it icon_biggrin.gif

3 to 5 hour battery, console games gone portable, bloody expensive and bigger than my pocket. No thanks, I'll stick with my iphone and old DS.

Obviously some baggy-pants-wearers here if people are putting their DS in their pants. Wear pants that fit, you bastards!

I cant see how it wont fit unless you're wearing skinny leg jeans. And if you're asking me to wear skinny leg jeans...no.

Of course not. But, if you're wearing at the very least 'fitted' jeans, you would look idiotic with a DS or PSP shoved in there.

If you're wearing baggy jeans, well, the portable console in your pocket isn't required icon_wink.gif.

I still don't think its very portable if I have to bring a charger wherever I go. Regardless of how roomy my pockets/satchels/bags are.

Wonder what the battery life would be like? The original PSP's had horrible battery life, Sometimes they would only last 2 hours.

Wow it looks like I am gonna be a buyer when this thing comes out. Provided there is decent battery life of course. I am tired of Nintendo all there games are designed for kids and their online modes suck!

Do we have any information on the battery at all or are you guys just jumping to conclusions? Yeah it looks like its pretty powerful but it is running an OLED screen which have a fairly low power comsumption and the screen is one of the main drainers of power.

I remember being 12. I used to say ridiculous things like that too, but with "Halo" instead of Nintendo. Then I actually stopped being an internet tough guy and played it.

(Yes, not a lot has changed since then).

Eurogamer.com">The recently announced PSP2, codenamed Next Generation Portable, has a battery life of between four and five hours, Eurogamer has been told by a source.

Six to eight hours of life was Sony's original target, Eurogamer understands.

Information ain't that hard to find icon_smile.gif. Most of the gaming press had said it has a similar battery life as the PSP.

Also price is easy to speculate on. With that tech you are looking at a lot of money especially what I have heard about the quad core stuff. Not even the most expensive smart phones have that kind of power and they are expensive as crap.

Game wise they are going in the opposite direction of what I want (quick, pick and play type games like Peggle or Angry Birds) and instead they are making games like Metal Gear and Uncharted which are like intense 12 hour games that require game sessions of over an hour at least which makes absolutely NO SENSE for hand held. Honestly who wants to look at a small screen all day when you have a 50" tv that can play the same games?

The PSP phone which is soon to be announced looks better than this, although I'm not sure I want to play old PS1 games on a phone for the same reason I don't want to play PS3 games on a hand held.

Sony is working with Google/Android so that we can access the Android app service as well as the PSN network, you get the best of both worlds really.

I don;t think Metal Gear or DoA or Kis Icarus or Zelda are specifically designed for kids.
There are games designed for kids however, and as a company that is great, because that demographic really has nowhere else to game.
Your not the only one the plays games. Kids play them too.

Nintendo aren’t doing anything wrong it is just they aren’t after my target demographic as much anymore. I want to play games like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Formula One and Uncharted and have great quality graphics, proper voice over’s in games (Unlike Zelda), and complex storylines taking on elements of struggle, war, violence, politics and religion. This is why I bought a PS3 after getting a Wii! There is only so much money one has to spend. I want it to be spent wisely on things I am going to enjoy most. Not party games like Mario Party or Wii Sports that are only fun to play in party’s and with online modes that freeze whenever I play them. I want only the best and I don’t want to buy two consoles in one generation again! I only have so many time and peanuts to spend on games. Other than that for me it is saving money for investment, doing homework for uni and saving up for a house. Business is business. Nintendo 3DS may have some good games but PSP-2 NGP to me looks like perfection!

I never realised people carried so much stuff on their person!

I feel bloated if I'm carrying anything more than the usual keys/phone/wallet in my pockets.

I wish less games would have these, as they're always so terrible.

Stop liking what I dont like!

And it seems I had misjudged plantshot. Surprise, surprise.

I'm not a big fan of such games. I'm happy with my zelda, mario, kid icarus, metroid, donkey kong, kirby, pokemon, fire emblem and golden sun. It gives me a nice variety methinks.

I can't imagine me getting another console, I'm sure I could be missing out but none of the "big title" games really appeal to me.
