A price will be forthcoming after the Tokyo Game Show has finished later this week however, with Kutaragi promising, "We won't announce the price of the PSP today, but after we hear the voices of our users, distributors, and developers at the Tokyo Game Show." Sony are set to have 100 PSP units and 20 titles on show at the TGS, and further titles were declared at yesterday's conference, most notably from Atlus (who PALGN still remembers best for the excellent Snoboard Kids on the N64), SNK (a 3D King of Fighters title), From Software (Tenchu) and Namco (Taiko no Tatsujin, apparently a drum-based music game).
Kutaragi also discussed the prospect of movies on the PSP's proprietary disc format, confirming that development on this aspect of the format is nearing completion. Alas, the UMD discs used in the PSP will not be recordable, though according to Kutaragi, "if the market starts to get stabilised and things are going well," recordable UMDs may become a reality.
A great deal more will be known once the Tokyo Game Show is out of the way, though at least we know Sony doesn't intend to make the same errors with the PSP as it did with the PlayStation 2, when an initial batch of games was followed by a software drought. "It wouldn't be good if there were a stack of games released at launch, and then a long period afterward without game releases," Kutaragi-san sagely announced. "So we need to look ahead. We want to make sure that we have a steady release [schedule] before announcing the launch date." To which PALGN says: Amen.
