PSP hardware is complete, Sony outline handheld plans

PSP News | Sony discuss movies, release dates and software schedules as PSP launch moves closer.
There may not have been any concrete announcements concerning release schedules or a price, but Sony still intend to ship their PSP this year according to a press briefing held yesterday in Japan. Sony COO Ken Kutaragi was present for Sony, though the creator of PlayStation refused to say whether or not the unit would cost more than Nintendo's DS handheld, which has been priced at $149 for it's US launch. Kutaragi-san also declined to be drawn on rumours that had the PSP's Japanese price at 33,000 yen (approximately £167/€244), describing such conjecture as 'speculation'.

A price will be forthcoming after the Tokyo Game Show has finished later this week however, with Kutaragi promising, "We won't announce the price of the PSP today, but after we hear the voices of our users, distributors, and developers at the Tokyo Game Show." Sony are set to have 100 PSP units and 20 titles on show at the TGS, and further titles were declared at yesterday's conference, most notably from Atlus (who PALGN still remembers best for the excellent Snoboard Kids on the N64), SNK (a 3D King of Fighters title), From Software (Tenchu) and Namco (Taiko no Tatsujin, apparently a drum-based music game).

Kutaragi also discussed the prospect of movies on the PSP's proprietary disc format, confirming that development on this aspect of the format is nearing completion. Alas, the UMD discs used in the PSP will not be recordable, though according to Kutaragi, "if the market starts to get stabilised and things are going well," recordable UMDs may become a reality.

A great deal more will be known once the Tokyo Game Show is out of the way, though at least we know Sony doesn't intend to make the same errors with the PSP as it did with the PlayStation 2, when an initial batch of games was followed by a software drought. "It wouldn't be good if there were a stack of games released at launch, and then a long period afterward without game releases," Kutaragi-san sagely announced. "So we need to look ahead. We want to make sure that we have a steady release [schedule] before announcing the launch date." To which PALGN says: Amen.

I am, moreso than the DS

I dunno, the power is definately there over the DS, but it's all very up in the air for me. When some reviews of upcoming games begin to emerge I think we'll get a better picture.

i'm somewhat looking forwards to it, again, more than the DS, but thats simply because i don't think using a stylus to chop vegetables is a fun pass-time icon_razz.gif at least with a knife and carrot you can eat later...

on the other hand, i don't think i will end up getting either, simply because i'm not usually in a situation where i can play a portable game, if i go somewhere i'm usually driving, or i'm not on the train long enough to bother... on the other hand if Sony make some games compatible between the PS2 (or PS3) and the PSP then i might consider it again...

I might get one, not especially looking forward to it though, the DS will be so much better. icon_smile.gif

ObsoletE: but with the DS's touch-screen, you can play a kind of game that you can't play anywhere else... so it's not so much about the portability as the innovation. You could play it when you're not on the move as opposed to playing a console. icon_smile.gif (And it's not just about those damn vegetables icon_lol.gif)
The reasons for getting the PSP are that it's a portable {DVD player | game player | PS2}, and that's about it, as far as I can see. icon_kero.gif
(Mind you, that's all handhelds have been in the past, too, so it's not that bad icon_smile.gif)

i know its not just about portability, but personally i'd rather play a game/dvd on a tv with 5.1 sound (when available) than on a 3" screen with stereo (or worse, mono) sound... call me crazy...

this is really to do with the PSP games that have interested me being mostly ports of PS2 games... maybe there will be something else that will attract my attention enough to make me buy one, but so far the ones that are PSP only haven't convinced me to get one...

however, if i end up working offshore, a portable games device would come in handy... even if its only to chop carrots icon_smile.gif (you know you love that argument icon_wink.gif )
