Beaterator Review

PSP Feature | Skeletal Thunder!
Last week, we had some hands-on time with a near-final build of Beaterator for the PSP, and we thought it was quite awesome. Now that we have the full thing in our hands and can put more hours into it, we present to you the review. However as mentioned in the preview, Beaterator is not a game, but a music program, so this review is a little different to our usual trend.

To elaborate, you’ll notice that we haven’t given Beaterator a rating. The reason behind this is that you can’t necessarily give a program like this a rating, but simply an overview as to the quality behind the product and why we urge music lovers to pick it up and toy with it themselves.

And with that out of the way, a bit of history behind the music program. Beaterator originated from the depths of Rockstars Home Page a few years ago, where people were able to toy with a small flash tool to create and generate their own sounds and music. This proved wildly popular on the website, so Rockstar took this popularity and poured it into the portability of PSP, along with the essence of Musical producer Timbaland, and out came Beaterator, a far more fleshed out and deeper music creation program.

With Beaterator, users can create any form of music and customise it to absolutely staggering levels. You can go in and change individual sounds, add in extra beats, change beats per minute, change the wave form, normalise, and about a billion other things which we can’t even remember on the top of our head. There’s a ton of things to do, and it certainly throws the gauntlet down against other high end programs which cost thousands of dollars to purchase.

And with all this depth comes a large amount of accessibility as well, which is possibly Beaterator’s best aspect. You can either start making music from the Studio, which allows you to add in any sound in whichever layer from a selection of thousands right away and get into the nitty gritty details, or you can select the Live Play option, which allows you to create and test drive a track by playing multiple sounds through eight layers on the fly. Templates is also added as an option to give you a starting point on sounds too, and while you test drive you can actually record your on the fly customising, which can then be edited further in the studio once you’re done. It’s intuitive, quick and incredibly fluid when it comes down to it, and makes life a whole lot easier for the people who don’t quite have the time or money to learn the inner workings of more advanced studio based programs such as products from Adobe.

But even then, as we’ve mentioned earlier, the more expensive professional products aren’t that far ahead of Beaterator. When it comes down to the basic sound editing tools, Beaterator pulls all of it off effortlessly and at a much easier level than that of the pro tools, so accessibility and customisation is guaranteed when it comes to it.

Another very nice feature with Beaterator is the ability to import and record your own sounds for your unique musical tracks. With the in-built microphone or an external one, you can record your own voice and lyrics directly into Beaterator and then layer it on top of songs, so you can pretty much create your own entire musical track with full lyrics to boot. You can trim, normalise and edit your recording explicitly as well, so in case there’s a part of it you don’t want, you can cut it out no problem. It’s customisation and ease of use like this that really makes Beaterator’s value for money go through the roof, because it’d likely be an incredibly useful asset for bands or musicians who need a cheaper and quality alternative to the more expensive products.

We’ve gone ahead and elaborated on the features of Beaterator, and explained how high quality it all is, however it’s something that you need to try and hear yourself to actually believe it. With the PSP’s portability combined with the incredible depth and scope of Beaterator, you can create music on the go, efficiently and on professional levels. We really can’t stress the excellence for value when it comes to this handy little title, and we urge all musical lovers and wannabes to pick Beaterator up, as it’s an outstanding musical product bound to satisfy your needs.

And as a final example of Beaterator’s quality, we here at PALGN have created our own song, called Skeletal Thunder. We’ve also applied our own horrible voices (in comical death metal voices too), so you can hear how crisp and clean things turn out, even if the job is amateurish and more amusing than anything. So enjoy listening to Skeletal Thunder in the video below, and go pick up Beaterator if you’re any kind of music lover.

So in this you basically make your own music? Wonder if the iPhone version is the same as the PSP. Seems like I need a mic for my iPod.

Great, I've got it stuck in my head.

'Skeletaaaaaaaal!'
I'd love to buy this, but I just know I won't use it often as I don't have a creative streak.

You can't take the death metal out of Denny.. not even with Beaterator. For the money you're paying, its certainly got some grunt under it's hood. I think RockStar have done alot of people a great service by coming up with something like this. Who knows, some young kid with a ton of ideas and no money to invest in pricey sound recording software gets this for his birthday and becomes the next 'big' thing icon_wink.gif
