Sony likely to scrap PSP Go UMD game transfer program

PSP News | No go on UMD transfer program at this time.
While earlier in the year Sony stated that it planned to have a UMD to PSPgo transfer program in place, recent comments by the electronics giant suggest that this proposed program is likely to be scrapped.

"We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time," a Sony spokesperson told Kotaku.

One of the rumoured plans involved Sony installing kiosks in retail stores, allowing gamers the opportunity to turn copies of their UMD games into digital copies.

While this move would not impact gamers that are new to Sony's portable platform, it may deter current PSP owners from switching over to the PSPgo until a thorough conclusion is drawn on the issue.

Not really, no. I guess they have to burn through their yearly R&D budget or else it will be cut down next year. Can't wait to see what they do with their next failed project..

If Sony does go through with that trade-in program in which we give up our physical copies for digital copies, I won't have any part of it. I know some people will like it, but I for one would never trade physical copies of my games for digital versions.

they needed to add something to the new psp go machine to make people buy one.... anything - even nintendo came up with a dodgy camera to make people buy again.

After unveiling this disaster, I can imagine the designers saying:
"Hang on.. but isn't a sliding screen (reduced in size), 16gb of memory, a rip off of AppStore and Bluetooth enough to justify spending cash $50 short of a Playstation 3 justification enough?"

The problem is that Sony back is trying to straddle two worlds, here. On one hand, Sony wants to maintain their existing good relationships with games retailers, which prevents them from providing too much of an incentive to download games via lower pricing or to push digital games that can't be resold. On the other hand, Sony doesn't appear to consider itself strong enough to brave the storm and just do it anyway. So they provide a half-baked "compromise" approach that pleases no one, especially the customer.

It's a similar reason to why downloadable games on the PSN or the Live Marketplace have the same RRP as the physical copies.

$250 for 15+ year old technolgy (It's basically a portable PS2) and no way to transfer your games over!? It's almost like they want this to fail just so they can use it as a tax rightoff or something!

If it was $250 it might actually have a chance to actually sell a number of units, but the RRP is actually $450 in Aus with the cheapest price being $398 or so.
