Sony encourages PSP owners to upgrade

PSP News | Get three free games by upgrading to a PSPgo.
Sony seems to be out in full-force promoting the PSPgo. Just one week before the system is scheduled to launch across the globe, Sony Europe has encouraged existing PSP owners to upgrade by promising three free downloadable games.

The promotion is available only to existing PSP 1000, 2000 and 3000 owners who have at least one UMD. When you unwrap your PSPgo, you have to connect it to your new or existing PlayStation Network account. You should see an option called PSPgo Rewards when you do this. After this, you connect your old PSP to the same account and launch the PlayStation Store. Pop one of your UMDs into the drive of your PSP and register it on PSPgo Rewards. You will be prompted to download a PSPgo theme, after which you should receive an email voucher for your three free games.

There will be seventeen titles to choose from at launch including SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3, LocoRoco, Buzz!: Brain Bender, Buzz!: Master Quiz and WipEout Pure. It's completely up to you which titles you download, so you can pick from old favourites or games you haven't played before. The promotion will run from 1 October 2009 until 31 March 2010. At the time of writing it was unconfirmed if this promotion will be running in Australia.

Coincidentally, PSPgo owners can potentially download a fourth game for free. It was previously announced that those who purchase and register their PSPgo console between 1 October and 10 October would be eligible to download a free copy of Gran Turismo. Nice swag for early adaptors, then.

Man, giving away 3 games?! They really must not have enough faith in the system selling on its own.

Hear that sound? Sounds like a toilet flushing......

Australians aren't going to bite i be thinking.

For something that expensive, I can see where their fear lies.. I have a PSP-2000 and a DS and although I think the PSP is a much superior handheld, I play the DS 10 times more simply cause there aren't enough good games on the PSP, and I can't see that changing.

Sony keeps on going on about how they're giving it more support, but I only really hear about LBP, Motorstorm and GT.. oh and maybe MGS. But cmon 4 games?
Ah, I'm beginning to see why EB gave this the arse. This effectively shuts out their "trade your old console + a few games and get x dollars off a new model" deal because you still need your old PSP to access this offer. Which kind of sucks for those who wanted to trade their old model to get the Go for cheap.

So if you have put hundreds of $$$ into the PSP on games and you upgrade to the Go (which I can't see the real benefit from) then I can take the library and trade in for 3 games. That doesn't sound fair. How about you check all my UMDs and allow me the downloadables on the Go? That sounds a little more fair to me.

Completely agree. For something that has so much potential I always come back to the DS as it's actually fun...

I totally agree.

Now while 95% of my gaming is done on console, my DS is the one that usually gets played when I do decide to play a handheld.

Nobody in their right mind would trade any existing PSP model for that piece of crap. The PSPgo is the most insulting excuse for a games console I have ever seen from the big three.

I am still waiting for them to let me know what I can do about my UMD based games, once they let me move them onto the PSPGo, I will get my order in.

Seventeen titles to choose from at launch? Cool. Can someone list the remaining titles?

With PSPgo Rewards you can download three much-loved, or totally new PSP titles for free, and put your new PSPgo to the test. Pick your favourites from a number of popular PSP titles. Get in on the action with Killzone™: Liberation or SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3. Give your reflexes a pounding with WipEout® Pure. Put your skills to the test with Everybody’s Golf™ or echochrome[/b]™. Give your brain a workout with Buzz!™: Brain Bender or Master Quiz. Or get quirky, with LocoRoco™ or Patapon™. There are seventeen titles to choose from in all, and the process is simple...
There's nine that are confirmed...

If you include the 2 Ratchet and Clank games that makes 11.

I would be surprised if Daxter didn't make it so there's 12.

Gran Turismo makes 13 (this is a given due to that promotion, so put down 10 as confirmed)

MotorStorm is possible. 14.

God of War maybe? 15

LocoRoco 2 is possible as well, although has that been released yet? I can't recall... 16

Anyone else want to take a guess at what the other title might be?

You'll be waiting FOREVER, because Sony said you will never be able to transfer them. icon_smile.gif

I am in love with my PSP-1000, and it's almost entirely due to the additions that custom firmware brings. A PSP on official firmware is practically crippled, and you can be pretty sure that the Go won't be hackable (given that the 3000 and even later 2000 models aren't). And then there's the absurd price and everything else that goes with the Go. Even with four free games it just isn't worth it.

You stole the words from my very mind! The only redeeming factor would be Sony allowing loyal customers the chance to transfer their UMD collection across. Now with that confirmed to be out of the way, Sony will proceed to dump on it's "loyal" fanbase once again.

I've got 19 UMD games and 2 UMD movies and I'm expected to just throw them all away along with my MemoryStick Pro DUOs? Sure, i'll just pull some more money out of my ass to support your next "experiment".

Way to treat your "loyal customers" Sony. When the PSPGo tanks faster than Betamax & Minidisc, I'll be the first to laugh at you.

And while we are talking about upgrading PSP's, turns out your UMD games will be useless after all! Good job Sony.

But it's been cancelled for now. Who knows how long it could be before they have a solution.

If you read the whole article you'll notice that it hasn't been cancelled, it just won't be available at launch due to the difficulties they've had with the legal implications so far.

Playstation Portable owners will not be able to transfer the disc-based UMD games they own to a PSPgo when the sleek new digital-only system launches next week, Sony officials told Kotaku today.

"We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time," a Sony Computer Entertainment of America spokesman told Kotaku.

"We are looking into programs for owners who have previously purchased UMD titles and want to exchange them for digital versions," Sony Computer Entertainment's Brian Keltner told Kotaku at the time. "It's something we are still hammering out the details. As soon as we have solid plans in place we will make an announcement."
So yeah they haven't cancelled it, it's just not done yet.

You know Sony, I actually like my original Crisis Core style PSP, and the ability to play imports on it. Why on earth would I give up my copy of Disgaea 2 to buy your overpriced rubbish?

are you guys all fan boys or something? seriously the whole point of the Go is for playing on the go (_ohhh now i know why they called it that). As in its way more conveiniet that way no umd = less space instead of an extra bag.
so please stop hating tho i agree its abit pricey but once its out wait a ittle and get it cheaper

You just accused multiple owners of PSP's of being anti-psp fanboys because they don't like the latest iteration of a console they already own.

If anything you're the one coming across as a fanboy.

If you bothered to read anyone else's concerns, you'd be a little peeved off if you were forced to repurchase all the games you already own. Throw into this the fact that the unit itself is ridiculously (read "desperately") overpriced and you can understand where people are coming from. This is the fourth PSP iterition to be released and it in no way rewards owners of the previous model(s). You are paying a great deal of money to essentially end up having to fork out even more money to play stuff you already own on a redesigned unit with absolutely no additional benefits (people with a slidy screen fetish excluded). No rabid fanboys/girls here pal.

My guess is that you either:

A) Sleep on a bed made of money
B) Have never owned a Playstation Portable before
C) Are secretly Kaz Hirai in the guise of a mere PALGN forum goer who is pretending to be a narrow minded elitist in order to recruit more financially masochistic customers to your cause. Hang on.. Kaz doesn't have to pretend to possess those qualities does he?
