Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars gunning for PSP

PSP News | Exclusivity? We believe that's an old old wooden ship...
Rockstar has announced that its previously DS-exclusive carnage-simulator Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be heading to PSP this year.

The new PSP version of the game will include upscaled widescreen graphics, new story missions and enhanced lighting and animation.

"Rockstar's work with the GTA series has been an enormous part of the success of PlayStation platforms," said Sony boss Jack Tretton. "Rockstar Leeds has shown incredible talent in creating games that raise the bar in terms of depth and innovation on portables, and with Chinatown Wars we have a rich, fast-paced, and incredibly addictive entry into the series."

Developed by Rockstar Leeds, in conjunction with Rockstar North, Chinatown Wars is scheduled to be released in North America and Europe in the third quarter of this year.

It's not gonna be the same on PSP. Part of the game's greatness was its touchscreen additions, like the hot wiring and throwing molotovs.

Yeah, I dont know how they'll adapt the game to play without any of that stuff, unless it will have PSP Go exclusive touch screen features..

Jaws, The PSP Go does not have touchscreen.

Yeah I have to admit CHinatown wars was one of the few games that actually impressed me with it's touchscreen stuff. Will be intersting to see what they do.

Not quite.

It's already known that Chinatown Wars sold pretty dismally on the DS (89,000 in it's first week in the US is absolutely horrendous) so obviously Rockstar are porting it over to try and make some of their money back. With the sales they were getting it wouldn't shock me if they're very much in the red with the game.

With the way Chinatown Wars sold on the DS I wouldn't be shocked if Rockstar just plain steer clear of the DS from now on.

Funny, I always thought diversity was an old, old wooden ship.

Next you'll be telling me my meaning of San Diego is wrong!

Exactly. Cash in.

Sad to hear that the game sold badly, it was a really fun game, was released around no other big games and really should have sold more. There was advertising for it, it was a side game in a hugely popular franchise etc. So the question is now, did the game sell poorly becuase of the GTA crowd downloaded the game, or becuase not enough people want to play a mature game on the DS? I'd be leaning towards the second option, although I hope it isn't the case.

The only reason I can see that it didn't sell so well is thay there are so many DS's out there that have been purchased by the casual market, and this is one of the few DS games that won't likely appeal to casual gamers at all. It is, however, a fantastic, old school GTA game, though probably a shade behind GTA2 IMO.

Will be interested to see how they implement projectiles, I mean they could easily ignore the alarm disabling thing, and alter the drug van/ ammunation truck opening up sequences a bit, but the projectile weapons may be harder to do on PSP. Certainly don't imagine throwing molotov's to be as fun on PSP.

the touch screen stuff annoyed the **** outta me very quickly, which is a shame cos it's an otherwise fantastic game.

can't believe it sold so poorly though - did another Petz game come out that week or something?

its the 1st GTA on a Nintendo system. Its not like one fps will save the genre on the Wii either, it takes time.

It's actually the fourth GTA to appear on a Nintendo system.

I know, it's actually selling quite consistently each month. But it wasn't that 'out of the gate bang' you would expect from a GTA. But like a lot of games on Nintendo's systems; it is a slow burner. We shouldn't just judge the first month sale of a game.

That's onl because it's cost was slashed by 40% within the first few weeks at most retailers in America and in a fair few other countries.

500,000 in the first 3 months is not a good number for any game by Rockstar, regardless of system.

Am happy to see Chinatown Wars appear on PSP. However I hope its NOT at full price rates. As others have said it was designed to have touchscreen, and without it, it just won't feel the same. Still, I'm sure it will be worth buying.

What happened to the yearly GTA PSP that was mentioned a few years back? I know they've been busy with GTA4, but still.. GTA is the reason I bought a PSP. Even though further titles like San Andreas Stories would be a cutdown port, I would have still loved it.
