PSP 2 is real and coming

PSP News | Chief creative officer at Acclaim reveals new PSP.
David Perry, creative officer at Acclaim, has revealed that the PlayStation Portable 2 is indeed real (Shocking! - Ed.), and could hit as early as Q3 in the US.

Speaking to Kotaku, Perry also confirmed that the PSP2 will be UMD-free.

"I spoke to a developer who is working on it right now," said Perry. "I know this developer is already working on it, so that means they have a prototype. That would sound like a fall release to me."

However, many other details remain unknown for the time being. With the lack of UMD drive, Perry speculated that digital downloads will replace the current UMD gaming market - potentially eliminating second-hand game sales.

Unfortunately, Perry was inconclusive about a release date or price, but said that all current PSP titles would show up on PlayStation's online store for digital download.

And he describes it as a PSP that doesn’t have a disc slot. It’s all digital, solid-state media. Is he making that up? What’s the story there?
Even though the guy being interviewed dismisses it, having 'all digital, solid-state media' could just mean that they're moving to cartridges, rather than having a disc with moving parts. The DS is technically that, but isn't a digital-download-only device.

Just some food for thought.

the only way i would consider purchasing games online is if they did two things.
first if they sold recharge type vochures like itunes, put the special code into your online psp account to increase your online balance. i believe the majority of people refuse to pay online via paypal or credit cards which i refuse to own. too much security risk with fraud still a major issue.

and secondly only if when downloading the games it doesnt count towards my download limit, which would never happen so then that counts me out completely.

if playstation feels like setting up a download station in a store that i can download my games using my vochure then you have me hooked.

you dont put barriers in front of people trying to purchase your product, download limits, security risks, will all cause people to limit the amount of games they would buy then otherwise would when they could easily purchase them simply in a store.

So Sony will charge us to download PSP games that we have already bought on UMD? Thats a bit rich.

Dear Sony,

PSP2 needs to be rid of all propriety Sony tech. Go with HD SD cards for memory, none of this Memory Stick Pro Two Duo Extra Mega Happy Time rubbish okay?

^^ They should have multiple slots for their Pro Duo and then another for HD SD cards. It would annoy me if, after buying an 8GB Pro Duo, that it wasn't compatible with the next PSP icon_sad.gif

Hmm, I'd still prefer to be able to obtain physical copies of games rather than having download only stuff...
