Reduced battery life for the PSP 3000

PSP News | The improved display will result in 20-30 minutes less playing time.
John Koller, the Director of Hardware Marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America recently discussed the PSP 3000 with Gamespot.

One of its key improvements is the enhanced LCD display, which will be brighter, more vibrant and will make it easier to use outside in the sunlight. Koller admitted however that there will be a trade-off, saying that '...battery life will decrease by a small amount. It's material but it's about 20 minutes, maybe 30 minutes and that’s because there’s a larger power draw with the brighter screen.'

Koller advised that the stock battery will provide 3.5-4 hours of use. The extended battery will still be available for separate purchase however, providing users with 8-10 hours of use.

As recently confirmed, the release date for the PSP 3000 in Australia is the 16th of October, with a price of $299.95.

as someone who plays at home mostly a brighter screen thats more visible in sunlight isnt that important to me

so they made a 2nd revision, jacked up the rrp by $20, and they couldn't include the 'extended battery' because...?

^does this extended battery exist yet? While I enjoy the hardware upgrades that are coming with this i'm still alil dissapointed they didn't bother to include blutooth.

Well, they just lost my sale - I was keen to upgrade from my 1000 model to get a better screen (the main issue I have with the PSP outside battery life), but if the battery life is further reduced (pretty measly as is) then bugger that.

The "extended battery" is just the old battery packaged with a cover to accomodate it's extra bulk compared to the slim battery. You can buy it from one of the many Asian online video game stores.

The reason Sony didn't include the extended battery in the new PSP is simple, style over substance. It's not bad business, really, look at Apple. For the record, I'd much prefer substance over style and have them include the more powerful battery at the expense of being a little bulkier.

Also consider the fact that the screen has a faster refresh rate, which eliminates ghosting that is present on the current generation PSP. I suspect Sony is extending their Bravia technology into other products (even Sony Ericsson phones are starting to have Bravia panels).
