The ACL is merely trying to save face, because it is factually inaccurate to assert that the classification guidelines won't be loosened - The draft guidelines released several months ago are very similar to the current guidelines in force for films. A few amendments have been made since then, however the basis is the same. These so called "uber violent" games almost entirely consist of obscure Japanese titles such as Rapeplay, which are entirely out of the mainstream and would remain illegal anyway due to being child abuse material (as they should).

Adding to that, most of the "extremely violent mainstream games" are already available uncensored in Australia. Splatterhouse, Dead Space, GTA IV (released uncut on PC and a patch released for consoles), Madworld, House of the Dead: Overkill, Dead Rising etc. Need I go on? The vast majority of violent games are not banned or censored in Australia at the moment.

But when all is said and done, there is no reason why adults shouldn't be able to access whatever video games they please. There is no reputable scientific evidence to prove that violent games are detrimental to society. Assumptions and conjecture are not good enough. Nor are obscure correlative links, which is what most of these so called "studies" consist of.

The ACL are just extremists and should be given no air time what so ever, because they've shown that they're incapable of producing a logical, fact based argument that doesn't come down to their religious bias.

Oh and by the way, I often see uncensored overseas copies of games sitting in EB or JBHIFI on the preowned shelf. So even importing or downloading isn't always necessary. Banning will never work.
I got my uncut copy from Playasia via FedEx today. Great game. So very gory and fun. The Oz version is a disgrace, don't bother. Ever. Don't even rent it out of curiosity, you'll want to stab yourself in the eye just for thinking about renting it.
Oh dear god when will this nanny state bullshit end.
It gets under my skin how ignorant people can be sometimes. Honestly, do you people think to do the slightest bit of research? You're just perpetuating ignorance.

It was common knowledge some time ago that PC version of GTA IV was passed uncut by the CB. As a result Rockstar also released the DLC uncensored, which consequently patched the original console versions as well.

Some reviewer Jeremy is, what has become of critics? Just a few moments ago I was reading about Modern Warfare 2 being censored in Germany and the author just went ahead and *assumed* the Australian release is also censored. This is despite the Classification Report stating otherwise and details of it being published more more than a week ago.

Does the press do nothing but publish crap these days? It's all assumptions and sensationalism. For the sake of your integrity and self respect, get the bloody facts right!!!!
You do realise that trying to define art means you're missing the entire point of it? Art is whatever you want it to be.

Art is entirely subjective.

I'd recommend people go out and hunt some of the Black Phantoms available when PBWT is up. Particularly Executioner Miralda. She's a tough b***h located at the very beginning of Boletaria Palace, but she drops a nice cleaver and around the area you can get some of the best armour in the game, Brushwood set. Keep in mind it's crazy heavy though.
After having played through the game twice now, I can tell you that Brushwood may be the best on paper, but it's pretty poor in practice. The protection it provides isn't worth the weight - unless you have some uber strength you won't even be able to move around much with it, or roll quickly, which is what really counts in the game.

My strength is 42 and I don't bother with it. On new game+ what armour you have is pretty moot, it's all about being able to roll around like a mad man. Heavy armour in general is just a waste of time.

Go with the ancient king armour + dark silver shield + stamina ring (forget what it's called exactly). You'll never go back.
The wowsers have predictably taken one level out of context and passed judgement based on a poor quality 5 minute video. They've also implied that adults shouldn't be able to play it.

I've seen the video of the level in question and as far as I know, the scene is supposed to invoke disgust and cause the player to build a degree of animosity towards the terrorists. It's not glorying terrorism in any sense of the word, common sense tells you that. I don't disagree that the scene would be disturbing for children, but it is up to parents to moderate their children(s) playing habits. An R18+ classification would also clearly help the situation and this further highlights that – but banning the game is not the answer. Again, parental supervision is the answer. Further more, there is no scientific evidence which definitely proves that violent video games have a causative effect in regards to real world violence.

Then there is Michael Atkinson who is busy spouting his usual rubbish:

"Expecting game designers to be responsible by not glorifying terrorism will always lead to disappointment."

His hate for video games and their makers is borderline pathological. He should be taken to court for slander. His ignorance never ceases to amaze me – he is Australia's answer to Jack Thompson, except in a position of power. The guy is clearly an absolute wack job. Why is it socially acceptable for film makers to produce exactly the same sort of content?

That being said, I will be purchasing the game on the 10th of November. Should it have it's classification revoked due to the assumptions and ignorance of the wowsers, I will be importing. Just yesterday I was able to obtain the uncut Left 4 Dead 2 in all of it's violent glory. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Any body bits flying out of the zombies?
Yeah. You can blast holes right through their stomach and see organs. Not as graphic as it sounds though.
...I've gotta say, this is yet another glaring example of the Classification Boards inconsistency. Fallout3 contains more graphic and disturbing gore imo. Didn't the CB state that the violence in L4D2 was realistic? Hogwash. It's very comical and over the top, there's nothing realistic about it.

Chopping zombies into pieces with a machete is SO much fun. What a pity Australians are going to miss out on this kind of thing.

Questions' welcome.
****Unfortunately that is not the case. A couple of years ago I somehow ended up on a list, so now every package that leaves the country, or enters the country to/from my address is checked. ****

Yeah, you got busted. I never have. Nor have most people. Sucks for you man, what were you trying to import, heroine?
"Customs have nice tricks as well so eventually that will fail consistently."

Nice rhetoric, but reality says otherwise. Regular airmail packages rarely get inspected unless the x-ray scanner shows an anomaly. Shipping through Australia Post is pretty much full proof unless you're importing drugs or guns.

Courier packages are much more risky, as companies like FedEx rovide readily assessable documentation about the contents of their packages. i.e in a plastic sleeve on the side of the package. If customs see this and know the item is banned, you're going to get done for it.

Bottom line: unless Customs open your airmail package they have no grounds to seize it.
****Instead, Australians will now have to make do with a heavily edited version of the game.****

Pigs ass. I'll be importing from the UK - in fact I'm putting a preorder down on it Wednesday when I get paid. I quite honestly couldn't care less about the law, Customs are a bunch of chimps anyway. They haven't caught me the last 14 times I've imported a banned game.

This backwards ass country needs a good kick up the bum. Where's the evidence that video games are more influential than films? Michael Atkinsons stance is based purely upon the assumption and not facts. We don't elect people to govern us based on assumptions. The prat needs to be removed. He's even successfully censored a discussion paper on the issue, oh I wonder what he's afraid of? That he'll be exposed for the complete moron that he is.

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,26216037-5006787,00.html

"MICHAEL Atkinson is among the nation's most eccentric public figures, a pedantic state attorney-general who is obsessive and whose dislike for lawyers and journalists borders on the pathological."

Plus you have the anally retentive Classification Board who don't know the meaning of the words precedent and consistency. Bunch of clowns who nit pick in order to justify their pointless jobs.

Got this game the other day. Rolled a noble and soul arrow completely decimates the enemies. Most are dead in 1 or 2 hits not including the knights.

After I beat Phalanx I decided to redo the level to get more souls. This time I tried to fight the red eyed knight. God he wouldn't go down. It was run ahead enough to turn around to hit him with soul arrow and hope his shield isnt up. I led him all the way down the giant staircase and I eventually gave up and cheesed it by making him fall in the pit.

That gave me 2000 souls which is 50% of what the entire 1-1 gives you. I then died to a blue eyed knight soon after since i didnt see him. icon_sad.gif
I remember the days when 2000 souls was a lot. Now I literally need 50,000 just to level up one stat, one time, on New game+. It gets soo expensive. But by the time I finished the game I had 301,000 souls which considering the cost of level ups, isn't that much.

I got Pure White Tendency on Stonefang tunnel yesterday, which allowed me to get the Keel Smasher (Dragon Bone Smasher in the US version). One of the best weapons in the game. hoorah! Killing every boss in the world without dying is damn hard lol
I killed Storm Ruler, Maneater and Old monk all in the space of an hour lastnight. My character is lvl 82 though, so between that and the moon spear I pretty much slaughtered the bosses.

World 5 to go and I've finished the game, but I will DEFINITELY be playing through it more once. One of the best-games-I have EVER PLAYED!
I don't think you need to post impressions, the game has been out elsewhere in the world for close to a year now.
Word has come through of a possible Australian release:

http://www.kotaku.com.au/2009/10/bargain-hunter-one-demon-many-souls/#comments

We’ve heard there are a few local distributors negotiating with Atlus to release Demon’s Souls in Australia, but as yet nothing has been confirmed.

Too bad I already have the Asian version.
ManeKast wrote
I highly doubt it will release early, Sony have a very strict embargo on this one (I was told by EB and JB staff) similar to Halo/Fable etc. Heavy penalties for selling it early.

We can hope though, all stores have their stock and trust me I tried already today.
Mate, people say exactly that every time a big release comes along. Not once have I seen a street date of a big game not broken.

Strict this, strict that. Whatever. Somebody will break it. They always do.
What servers you connect to depends on the games version. i.e Asian version will only connect to Asian servers. It doesn't matter what region your PSN account is set to. If you have an Australian account for example, you can even download patches from other regions without a problem. The server detects what version of the game you have and downloads the patch for the relevant region.

Basically, MP is region locked for latency purposes. So someone with the US version won't be able to interact with someone who has the Asian version.
I got my Asian copy on Thursday. I've been playing non stop since then and I'm about 10hrs in, killed 3 bosses and am soul lvl 26.

Absolutely love the game. To be honest, I have been gaming since the Atari2600 and Demon's Souls is quickly becoming my most favourite game of all time. Rivalling even Ocarina of Time....I never thought I'd be saying that any time soon but this game really brings back the old school magic.

IMO no other game this generation comes close to achieving the level of polish and substance demon's souls has to offer. It's just an all around phenomenal game. From the loot, to the bosses and combat, I just bloody love it. It would be a crime not to release it in Europe and Oz.

My only regret is waiting this long to import it.
The OFLC doesn't exist any more - since it was merged with the Attorney Generals department it's just called the Classification Board.

That said, I'm still importing the game. I couldn't care less about this country's paranoia about video games. The politicians are brain dead, the community is clueless and the law is powerless.

I've imported plenty of RC games in the past and customs has been none the wiser. Do yourself a favour and give your money to a less paranoid, brain dead nation.

Atlus have consistently denied the possibility of a PAL release but I think it's inevitable TBH
If it does get a PAL release it won't be from Atlus. Atlus don't publish in PAL regions and their games are picked up by other publishers in the PAL region ala SquareEnix with Persona 4.
Oh yeah, sorry I meant the developers From Software.
My Asian version (English voice/text) was shipped out on Thursday via Registered Airmail, so I should have it by mid/late next week. It was hard to find somewhere with it in stock, it seems the game is still in high demand as stores seem to be sold out within hours of getting stock. I ended up going with Renchi.com. $83AUD incl. free registered airmail shipping.

Can't wait to play. From Software have consistently denied the possibility of a PAL release but I think it's inevitable TBH. In all honesty I would probably go with the U.S version, but there's nothing wrong with the Asian (Korean/Chinese) release. Just don't touch the Japanese version as it has Japanese text only (menu's etc).
********The biggest problem we have had is that nothing really of any importance has been refused classifications until Left 4 Dead 2.******

That's just plain wrong. Silent Hill Homecoming, GTA3/San Andreas and Fallout3 are all games of some of the largest franchises in the industry. Guess what they all have in common? At some point they have been banned banned and censored.
"Karai Pantsu

Sounds like their main problem is that the enemies are 'infected humans' rather than undead critters... I wonder if a simple change to what they are called would be enough to get this through as MA15+ ?"

That's not at all far fetched, mate. The CB are known for their anally retentive decisions. I bet if they were straight out called Zombies instead of infected humans, it would not have been banned.

Really goes to show how far they're going in order to justify their jobs.
"I haven't played Prototype, sorry, but I thought a large amount of the dismemberment portion of the gameplay was edited for the Australian release? I'm not saying editing is the solution - Editing is needless and stupid!"

Nope it was released totally uncut in Australia. I have it.
I will be importing as I normally do when this sort of thing happens. Exorbitant prices, coupled with censored content, there is no way HELL I would be buying locally.

The CB will not stop I, an adult, from playing this game. I am sick to death of this nanny state they call Australia and the government can go to hell.

You all think Australia is a free country? Pigs ass. You think "she'll be right mate"? Pigs ass. There you have it people, due to your apathetic BS we have finally lost one of the biggest games of the year.

Congratulations. I hope you're happy.
Re: Banned Game Help (3 years ago)
No that's incorrect. Only people using pirated copies got banned.
Re: Banned Game Help (3 years ago)
Firstly, customs have better things to do than waste tax dollars on confiscating video games, I know from personal experience. Even if they see the game in question it's highly unlikely you'll get done for it. I've imported a variety of banned games and even found the odd one preowned at places like EB, GAME, GameTraders etc.

Secondly, why would you get banned from Xbox Live? No such policy exists. MS don't ban people for playing banned games - it just doesn't happen. Never has never will

Lastly, there will be people without any practical experience who tell you it's illegal to import banned games and that you'll get fined blah blah blah. But at worst you'd get a warning, you won't get prosecuted for importing a few video games.

If your console doesn't have the latest 'pirated' firmware then MS will detect that and ban you, both for playing a pirated game and having modified firmware. MS don't ban people for playing imports, that's ridiculous. Region locks are already boarderline illegal, if they banned people from LIVE for playing legitimate imports they'd be up for spanking by the ACCC. I don't know where you people get your information from, honestly.
Re: PS3 Slim confirmed (3 years ago)
To all of the people suggesting BR playback be removed - do you realise that all PS3 games are on BR discs?

I have read some stupid things in my time, but jeez.

Actually the guidelines for film and video games are the same, only difference is the lack of an R and X rating for games (though no X rating is kind of understandable).
.
Well, no they're not. The classification markings are the same but the guidelines are different. Read the legislation. Video games are treated differently under the law because the government assumes they are more impactual on the audience than films due to their interactivity, hence different classification guidelines and legislation.

There are many things permitted in MA15+ films that aren't permitted in MA15+ games, and it doesn't always have something to do with incentives or rewards. For example, laws relating to advertisement and exemptions from classification differ with video games. But more to the point, the process of classification just isn't the same. The government might try to make you believe that but it just isn't the case in reality. There is a very big double standard.

In terms of games containing the same content like I previously said, there was a massive overhaul of the classification system in 2005 to bring everything to a more unified position, whereas before ratings were based on the level of violence, sex, etc now it is based upon the impact. Therefore a lot of titles pre change could have gotten through on the level of content even though the context and impact matches that of banned games today.

.
Yes and no. Legislatively, video games are still treated differently to other media. You seem to be making an awful lot of assumptions without providing any sources. 'impact' and 'context' are not the only factors, the level of classifiable content is still very relevant. You also have to take into account the fact that the states and territories have quite a few differences when it comes to classification, despite the ever hypocritical 'co-operative classification system'. The rest of the country can't have R rated games due to SA, but the NT & ACT can have X18+ films despite such not being legal to sell/rent in all other jurisdictions. Or CAT1 & 2 publications being illegal to sell in QLD, but legal in all other Australian jurisdictions.

There is a massive amount of hypocrisy when it comes games.

Sin Ogaris wrote
Oh, and in terms of film, no they don't get released uncut "regardless of content" they get released uncut if the content is deemed to be within the classification guidelines OR the artistic nature of the piece (I've mentioned it a few times already but Romance is the perfect example of this situation, it quite clearly breaches the R and X ratings, for different reasons obviously, yet after lengthy appeals was finally given the ok) outweighs the graphic nature of the themes.
I never said all films get released uncut regardless of content. My point was that the context test is not applied so arbitrarily and anally with films because they are much more diverse and the content differs dramatically between films (ignoring my disagreement with context altogether). I don't feel this is the case with games. I feel that the CB nit picks when it comes to classifying games, which results in the embarrassing number of bans. Comparison of the violent content in Dark Sector & Fallout 3 displays this best of all.

Sin Ogaris wrote
I wouldn't say I grasped that you said context was a "big" factor in the CB rulings (still feels wierd for me typing that instead of OFLC, force of habit I guess) but I understand now. If you honestly believe that the context should be seen as "negligible" in the rulings of the classification board well, "you can deny the sky is blue and despite it being your opinion, which you're entitled to, you're still factually wrong and your reasons for believing such a thing are very questionable".
Different scenario I'm sorry to say. There is no scientific merit in so arbitrarily applying the context test to video games (Or movies for that matter) and the reason I say this is because I just don't feel the context of said questionable content differs so dramatically between say, Dark Sector & Fallout3 or whatever other reason. It's a whole different kettle of fish when you compare films like Cannibal Holocaust and Irreversible, because the context of the sexual violence in those films is immediately obvious. HOWEVER, that being said there is still no scientific merit in treating them differently, which is half of my point: the entire system is based upon assumptions.

All in all my point is this: video game content is just not diverse enough to warrant banning games due to the context which certain content is presented in. As a result it seems to be that the CB resorts to nit picking in order to justify their decisions. If an R rating existed it would give them some breathing room, BUT the classification guidelines themselves should be adjusted according to science and not assumptions. Yes video game legislation at a federal level is practically the same as films, but you have to take into account state/territory enforcement legislation as well. But only taking about the classification PROCESS, it is different to films regardless. I mean, how the hell can a viewer be 'rewarded' in a film? It then becomes an interactive DVD, which is a sub-category of film classification. Different to a game, different to a regular movie. The documentation the CB needs to be provided with differs, so even different types of movies are classified differently - let alone video games.

SOURCE: http://www.classification.gov.au/www/cob/classification.nsf/Page/Industry_ApplyforClassification_ApplyforClassification-FilmnotforPublicExhibition

Ok this is really my final post. I've made my point and all the evidence is there for people to read. I fully support an R rating but it is not by any means the be all end all solution.
