Re: Windows 7 (3 years ago)
I've been using windows 7 for about a month now and have to say i was stunned by its performance.

I've used XP all the time before this so i never really got a feel for vista. The only experience of vista is on my mothers crappy computer that barely runs it. Anyways compared to XP, win7 runs way faster on the setup i had when i installed it (Core 2 duo E6400, ATI 1950pro, 2gb DDR) and of course upgrading the GPU only helped things icon_wink.gif

Most of the things have been covered already, but i'd like to mention how much i feel multi-tasking has become faster with 7. Alt+tabbing from apps and games during stress is a lot smoother than on XP even while using the fancy animations. I suppose this is benefits from better support for multi-core processors and might've already been the case with Vista since i never tried it. I've never noticed any lag or sound problems that have been mentioned before though.
I'm a true flight simulator player so PC all the way.

I haven't seen even a single title on console that would get even near "simulator". Too much of a niche business.

I like consoles too. Had N64 and GC. NES was also the first ever gaming platform for me. Still, nothing beats a PC. (Smash comes close icon_razz.gif)

IL-2, Eve, CoH, RTW i could name as a few good games on PC. But it's a useless debate, both serve their purpose for their customer group.
Joys of PC gaming, you never know what will happen icon_biggrin.gif

Good thing you got it working, excellent game eh?

Drastic much?
Cruel, but almost certain to fix a problem if it can be fixed icon_smile.gif

Anyways, have you tried reinstalling all the less usual drivers, mainly motherboard and audio drivers. Also try some older graphics drivers, they're weird sometimes.

I'll try to come up with something better soon.
EVE online, i'm hooked and can't get out of it icon_biggrin.gif

There's mine. Usually have pics of Aya Ueto on there but it's refreshing to have a bit of change from time to time icon_biggrin.gif

This isn't a desktop pic, but the pic is on the desktop lol

Well, like we discussed yesterday, IL-2 is something that has to be approached with caution. icon_wink.gif I still want to learn how to fly, but I am taking it slowly, and once the situation is right ( and motivation is at its peak ), I will do that darn JFC 'flying-test' again. icon_biggrin.gif
I found that that it's actually quite accessible for a flight sim. Especially as you can turn a lot of the more difficult sim-like things off and gradually implement them as you master the game.
That's true, but if your goal is "full real" that's not the route to take. Even the basic things get twisted on "easyer" settings, making "full real" soon feel even harder. Too many bad habbits to pick up.

I was looking at getting this game, did you guys buy it from a retailer or purchase it online if so what are the costs to buy it and then the per month cost. Does it have a steep learning curve?
Hey Mantra icon_smile.gif

The client is downloadable for free from www.eve-online.com

The monthly fee for the game is 15€ per month and there are also options where you can pay for a longer play time at once which will come a bit cheaper per month.

The learning curve is steep(ish) in a way. It depends how you look at it. I feel that you can grasp the basics fairly easy, but there's more you learn all the time while playing it, you will never know it all. I owe most of what i know to my corp, they're great.

If you're interested, PM or MSN me and i'll send you a 14-day trial offer e-mail. You don't need to give your credit card info for the trial, or so i've understood.
I've always thought graphics don't matter nearly as much as storyline etc... Still, graphics are very important, i'd lie if i'd deny that.

It may not be so much about having "good" graphics as it's about having CLEAR graphics. It's hard to explain though... icon_smile.gif

so NO, graphics aren't as important as storyline/gameplay, but they certainly aren't just something to be neglected.

Some good ones there
Terrible, I don't know if i'd chat in a long while after that (not that i chat anyway...) icon_eek.gif

Song: Through the looking glass

I just installed the good old Tie Fighter (collectors edition that's optimised for win95) and it kicks ass! icon_biggrin.gif

Of course i'm always playing Il-2
currently also:
Eve-Online
Call of Duty 2
Oblivion (not too actively though)
I used to play a lot of RTS in the time of Red Alert, Warcraft and Starcraft, but now the only RTS i can really play is Company of Heroes.

Still waiting for the miracle of a realistic RTS, don't know if it even has a chance to work, but i want to see icon_smile.gif
On the ground: Bolt action rifle (Mauser Kar98 or Enfield)

In the air: Mauser mg 151/20

If we go to more exotic weapons, nothing beats the good old bow and arrow.
Very good review Tristan. You managed to actually take the issues that are whined about in the game community all the time.

The weakness of the game is clearly the sounds. Or not the sounds themselves, but as they're designed for high end sound system, the average user gets little out of it.

As a side note, i'd like to point out that there has never ever been any cheating on the online servers (except for one or two exploits). 1C has kept the game code a tightly kept secret, so there's no "speed hacks" or anything.

Compare that to CoD2 icon_rolleyes.gif
Re: Graphics Cards (6 years ago)
I have a Saphire 1950pro PCI-E 256mb.

There's not many games yet it couldn't run on 1280x1024 with maxed settings.

Also, don't get too scared about PSUs, and especially don't get stuck on the "You need at least 54690245W PSU to run this and this card."

When i got my card, on the internet everyone said get at least 550W PSU, but the guy who i bought it from told me that's bollox, this 420W one actually produces more stable power (or something similar, not like i understand those) and is a lot cheaper. And the 420W one has worked like a charm with this one. icon_biggrin.gif
Don't have time now to check all the details, but when running two sticks you usually run them in Dual Channel mode. In that case, make sure they're placed in the correct slots (correct slots should be found in your motherboard manual).

I tried to run dual channel wrong and my pc crashed after a while in windows. So at least if that is what's happening to you, you should check it.
Re: Post your Pix (6 years ago)
Red eyeness is a lot worse in my pics... then again, I am the Red Baron after all... icon_smile.gif

Artie, do you have anything that has us together? I just realised i don't icon_confused.gif
Wow suprised there's some interest icon_wink.gif

I don't know how long ago you tried it, but the game has evolved a lot during it's time.

The newest (and last) release is IL-2 1946 which includes IL-2 Forgotten Battles, Aces expansion, Pacific Fighters, Sturmoviks over manchuria and 1946. So there's a nice bit of content only for 15£

http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/3251021/IL2_Sturmovik_1946/Product.html

On full settings the graphics of this game are great, even on todays standards. Quite good for a 4 year old game eh?
IL-2 Sturmovik series (6 years ago)
Now i don't suffer staying on a message board with no IL-2 thread so i'm now making one. Might be futile, but i'll give it a go anyway.

I've played this game for more than two years now and show no signs of boredom. Games come and go, but IL2 has been the one to stay through everything.

Anyone else here fly IL2 or have used to play it?

Some videos my squadmates have done:

I play EVE to and to no suprise, in the same corp with Artie.

I actually got my first true PvP experience yesterday (discounting couple PvP exercises with corpmates). At least it was a Battlecruiser vs. battlecruiser, but from the beginning i saw i stood no chance.

So, farewell to "The Jug", you served me well. 50mil loss which i just have to suffer. And now on to fit "The Jug II" to full combat shape... icon_biggrin.gif

edit: Changed the name i referred to Artie with, accidentally used his EVE name icon_lol.gif
Re: Your newest purchase (6 years ago)
Hmm, I haven't invested too much in games lately... I think my last purchase was IL-2 1946 icon_smile.gif

Unless we count every month of EVE subscription icon_wink.gif
Nice one, good laugh icon_lol.gif

Hmm, i couldn't get any sence out of the MIA thread so i'll post here...

And now i've forgotten what i wanted to say icon_redface.gif

Hi icon_smile.gif
I welcome you here and salute you for taking this HUGE step...

mmm... when thought closely I have disapeared three times and made three comebacks... Don't follow my example please icon_wink.gif
I am on the intels side because I have some friends with bad experiences with amd... Nevertheless it seems that at least here in Finland amd is a lot cheaper than Pentium 4.

And aren't amd athlon 64 processors currently best ones? icon_confused.gif
