A great choice. Congrats, Adam!
Re: James Bond (4 years ago)
Not really, actually. The context is great, but it's also a beautiful song. Armstrong's final hit, too.
Re: James Bond (4 years ago)
As a bit of a film music aficionado, the Bond music interests me greatly. Yes, of course Goldfinger is the best (and there is actually a really cool Propellorheads remix floating around out there if you can get hold of it). However, did you know, for example, that Johnny Cash recorded the original Thunderball theme? Then Shirley Bassey had a shot, and then Dionne Warwick, before they settled on Tom Jones? You can find all the versions out there; I think they're all on YouTube too.

From a purely personal perspective, though, I can't go past Louis Armstrong's 'We Have All The Time In The World' from On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
Re: Australia (4 years ago)
Saw it tonight. I actually quite liked it, though it has some major misses. Most notable of the bad is its treatment of the Aboriginal characters as noble savages. It's also a little racist to another non-white character.

On the whole, though, it's a good film, though you've got to accept the trappings of its genre. Also, for those worried about the length - I was never bored, despite the run time. It really only feels a touch longer than your average film.

Re: James Bond (4 years ago)
Quantum was an interesting film. I didn't like the editing very much. It works in Bourne because the style is about the character; it's about getting us inside Bourne's muddled mind, his instincts and his natural reactions. Bond's action should be elegant rather than based on kinetic energy.

That said, I did like the film as a whole. It felt like a film student has finally made a Bond film. How many references to previous films were there? I can remember at least three:

>>>SPOILERS<<< wrote

1. The Tilly Masterson reference from Goldfinger, with Agent Fields covered in oil.
2. A nice new spin on the Moonraker pre-credits sequence with the parachute.
3. The dropping-a-guy-over-the-edge after interrogation thing from Octopussy (I think? It was a Moore film, I'm a little confused).

I would follow you (if I had an account) but I just saw you've only just discovered the argument/contradiction Monty Python sketch. You truly are behind the times.

On Twitter: I don't think it's anywhere near mainstream, or will ever become so. It's only useful if you have an audience. Most people don't have enough people that give enough of a **** about what they're doing at every moment of the day, in addition to a Facebook status. I really don't see Twitter ever being useful to people who aren't internet famous, politicians (see Obama's account) or celebrities.
Like James, I would have agreed with you up until a short while ago. I fall into none of your categories (unless you count being a PALGN writer as internet famous icon_wink.gif ), and I use it all the time. The secret is that it's less of a "facebook status without the rest of facebook" and more of a way to have very short, quick and easy conversations with a wide variety of people.
Yes, you're correct, the game can now be downloaded from the Good Game site. When I spoke to Zac he couldn't tell me an exact date, but I'm not surprised it is out already as he indicated it could be.

2 questions. Who is sitting at the far end of the booth? And who is the ninja behind the whiteboard, trying to be discrete while having a squat (luckily with paper down on the floor)?
At the end of the booth is Kim, and the squatter is Evan. And no, I don't know what he's doing.

I understand where you're coming from, Daniel, though I don't believe it was "mean-spirited" of me because it was my initial interpretation and nothing out of spite - much like other reactions in this thread. But (respectfully) that's also your reaction to my reaction, so it's a nice little cycle. Regardless, I think we've raised some valid points (and perhaps some awareness about the impact sexuality has on gamers and their gaming habits). Zeldamario has probably achieved more than he thinks making this (which seems to happen a lot around here!).
Agreed on all points, especially the last. Thank you.

I also agree that there are probably better uses for this thread than such debates, so, moving on then...
Ravenous wrote
I call it extreme because to me it kinda looks like "I want to mix my sexuality with my gaming." Homophobia or no, it's a little attention-seeking.
But we mix our sexuality with our gaming all the time, but because our sexuality is the norm it's less visible. I know neither you nor I have posted a topic asking if there are any straight gamers out there, but that's not what I mean. What I mean is that our gaming experiences are fundamentally familiar to most as they are intended to be the dominant one: as a man, I am meant to find certain game characters attractive, for example, and I can be fairly certain that other straight men share similar experiences. If I were a gay man, these experiences would be fundamentally altered, and I know that I would wish to try to form a community or at least acquaintance with others who might share a similar experience. It's a fundamental question of who we are and what impacts on our experience, gaming and not. It seems to me to be almost no different from the threads asking if there are any gamers from WA here.

I'm not saying it isn't attention seeking; I'm not saying it is. All I'm saying is that it's an understandable desire, and to call it 'extreme' seems to me a bit mean-spirited.
Ravenous wrote
It's probably a little extreme tying your sexuality to your gaming hobbies and putting it out there like that. It's almost as though you're trying to incorporate the two and have a MMOrgy or something.
I'm not sure that you can really call it extreme. With the amount of homophobia in the gamer community (need I mention Xbox Live?), if I were a gay gamer I'd be trying to find as many like-minded people as possible. I don't think you could begrudge someone that simple liberty; that's what the internet is for, after all.
I don't know how on earth I found this, but you have to see it. It's strangely mesmerising:

Re: Warranty problems (4 years ago)
Yeah, I heard back from play-asia, and the unit is one full month outside their warranty period, so they won't have anything to do with me either.

So, it looks like ace will be getting my business, just as soon as I can save up for the damn thing. Thanks for all your help, guys, I appreciate it.

Warranty problems (4 years ago)
Hi guys,

My PS3 last night decided that it doesn't want to read disks anymore. I did a little research and it looks like it's the known issue - no Blu-rays or games being read at all.

I rang Sony and they won't service it because it's a Japanese PS3. They claim that it's a different wattage so they'd need to get different tools to fix it. Not entirely sure I buy it, but they definitely weren't going to be helpful.

So, I'm left with a problem. Either somehow contact Sony Japan and see if they want to service it, or get it done here through some third party. Does anyone have any suggestions or solutions? I'm a bit lost, and at the moment, more annoyed than anything else, so if you've any bright ideas I'd love to hear them...

I've also contacted play-asia, on the off chance that they'll refund or exchange the unit... fingers crossed.
