Kerning is the space between letters. Not necessarily evenly, as the example shows at the Wiki page you linked.
Wiki wrote
Kerning contrasted with tracking. While tracking adjusts the space between characters evenly, regardless of the characters, kerning adjusts the space based on character pairs. There is strong kerning between the V and the A, and no kerning between the S and the T.
As all the letters in pic have flat edges, they cannot overlap without touching. So they cannot be kerned right?
Edit: They can be kerned actually as I understand it. But tracking is equally the same in this situation as this also evenly spacing the letters...
Re: Funny Links (1 year ago)
After looking up what kerning is, isnt the picture flawed? As you cannot Kern any of those letters anyway?
Should it not refer to tracking rather than kerning?

After having done my group session last night, I noticed when doing push ups my wrists began to hurt. This prompted my to think I need to strengthen them.
Has anyone done this and what are the best exercises to focus on them? Or do you just srengthen them as secondary with other exercises (bicep curl, bench press, etc)?

Re: The Gym/Losing Weight thread (1 year ago)
I guess nows a good time to share my story.
I have always be an overweight person. Since primary school.
When I left school (2003), in the first year I was reasonably fit, after working in a furniture dept of a store and simply just having half my dinner at night and half for breakfast. I reached 87kg at my lowest, although not buff. I am 6' 3" or 190cm tall and rather large build so this weight was normal for my body type, where as most others would be more around the 70 or less.
I soon quit work to focus on my studies. This is where the weight started to climb. Due to work load and low funds I never worked out. I also ate poorly. I had little flutters with working out here and there for 5 years.
It was last year when my mate started to lose the weight, that I decided to do the same. This was when I was at my all time high of 121kg in July 2011. The heaviest I have been all my life.
It was a reall downer and I can see how people might just eat to take the mind off it. I would often have a "snack" of a can of soft drink, a couple of chocolate bars and bag of chips. That was over 2500 kj or about 1/3 my adult avg daily requirement, just as a snack. If I kept my way I would join those of biggest loser. People often think how do you let yourself get to that kind of weight (140kg+), the trouble is it is easy. The difficult part is getting rid of it and staying rid of it.
So through cutting down on food, the old addage of Energy in/Energy out, I started to lose the weight. Not soo much cutting out fast food all together but having it maybe twice or 3 times a month. Every time I picked up packaged food, I looked at the nutriotional information and primarily the kj. This habit really helped as I could gauge how much I had already had and if I could afford to eat somthing. The weight came off at about 1kg a week. This was without going to the gym.
I finally joined my local Stepz gym just before christmas when I was 107kg as I was floating around that weight for sometime and felt it necessary to start working out to lost more weight. I really enjoy the 24hr part, as in the past I was a member of fitness first and found I always ran out of time to work out.
I then saw an ad for a 8 week challenge through the gym. It only cost $200 for a diet plan (1700-1800 cal/day or 7000-7500kj/day), 2 workout sessions a week with the trainer (as part of a group) and also a workout plan for the rest of the week. I joined this and feel its the best money I have spent. when I started I was weighed in at 104kg, held a plank for ~40 secs, held a squat against the wall for ~35 secs.
Just past the 2 week mark on the weekend and had a weigh in. I weighed in at 99.7kg. This made me soo happy as this is the lightest I have been in 4 years, and I still have 6 weeks to go. I hope to reach 85-90kg again but have a buffer body, more defined muscles. Being able to hold the plank and squat for more than a minute is also a dream. I look forward to going to the group session each time as each time I go I know I am closer to my goal.
I feel soo much healthier, soo much more energetic. That one day in July last year really feels like the begining of my new, better life. I now feel disgusted at the amount of energy in a can of soft drink, or even a small bar of chocolate.
It also feels like it doesnt cost me anything. The money I save on not having as much fast food covers the cost of the gym.
This thread has given me much inspiration as it is when we see other succeed, we push ourselve to succeed as well. I hope my story gives someone that push to make the change needed to lose the weight.
TL;DR
Always overwieght as child.
87kg my lowest point just after leaving school
121kg, my highest point 5 years after.
Decided to change one day in July 2011.
Now 99.7kg.

Re: The Gym/Losing Weight thread (1 year ago)
When I was down to my lowest weight (87kg when I was 18) my diet was to take what I was given for dinner and only eat half and have the other half for breakfast.
This worked because its not only about portion but also time of day. You dont need the big energy filling food at night... your body will just use your reserves (fat and glucose) to repair. But also the protein from what dinner you did have.
Also having the bigger breakfast (than cereal) also helped for good eating throughout the day.
Granted I was working the furniture dept of a retail store and thus doing alot of physical work, but something as simple as eating half for dinner half for breakfast really helped.
I am doing this again but its hard when I am going out for dinner alot more now (restaurants and subway, not fast foods)

Lack of ingame voip has really killed it for me.
BF2 worked soo well due to this. Being able to com with teammates in real time and more effectively than typing is really necessary in a game that tries to promote teamplay.
Battlelog voip is at least something. But if you join a game without friends then you need a better way to communicate with your squad.

Have you tried swimming?, its high impact and lower injuries than jogging. Gym is good for muscles which will burn fat faster but I wouldn't suggest gym alone.
So I recommend this and I want to get back into swimming again. Just need to find a squad cause it works best when someone else tells you to do 10 laps, if you try to workout alone you just give up and dont usually push yourself enough.
Re: Battlefield 3 (1 year ago)
Why oh why dont they have more squad positions than players?
BF2 had 9 squads of 6 possible. So you can have 2 player squads and still had squads available for others. With there being 8 x 4 (32) if there is a private 2 or even 3 squad you have to play out of squad. Which reduces points and makes it likely the server will swap you to balance.
Just make more positions than players in 64 servers cause we all know that why people bought it on the PC.

Re: Computer restarting itself, maybe overheating? (1 year ago)
Yea that should be good.
I just buy any paste as I dont get into o'cing so dont need the best. I got some from the local computer store for $8, get it there if you dont want to wait for postage.
Underclocking is another idea. Otherwise a better heatsink and fan, although if looking into buying that perhaps just upgrading to one of the i series will be better in the long run.

Re: Computer restarting itself, maybe overheating? (1 year ago)
Its is applied between the heatsink and the cpu.
The paste comes with an applicator, so use that to scrape off the old paste and then to apply the new paste over the cpu where it joins with the heatsink. Spread it out to a thin layer. You can let some run over, just as long as it doesnt run over the cpu and down to the board, i can imagine being conductive it can cause a short.
It might be best to get a friend who has done it before if are not comforatble. Gettin it off is easy enough, generally getting intel heatsinks to clip into the board you need to be forceful and may break the mboard.

I just opened up my PC and turned it on. My CPU fan doesn't spin anymore. Hello, problem!
Check it isnt plugged in reverse. This shouldnt be possible but can happen if forced I guess.
Otherwise fan is dead. Buy a new one from ebay I guess. Otherwise I dont know about fitting another fan. Probably need to look at a whole new heatsink and fan setup.
Re: Computer restarting itself, maybe overheating? (1 year ago)
Could be that the thermal paste isnt conducting the heat well so you could buy some new paste.
Also could look into a better heatsink and fan.
Otherwise better cooling for the case.
90c is extreme I think.

My mate recently had alot of freezing... reinstalled the graphics drivers or perhaps downgraded to the previous driver version and that fixed it... might be one of the .dlls have become corrupt...
I would think the 550w would be enough. But it might not hurt to giver a 650 or 700 a try. I usually go for that anyway, better to have more than not enough.
I downloaded the CPU monitor and Nvidia graphics monitor from here. Its nice to see how everything is running, loads, temps, etc.
I had trouble with my 550ti's overheating while playing bf3, was running up near the 85c. On retrospect I should of got a 560ti or better. I had freezing, when my card would overheat. Putting a high flow 140mm fan on the side of the case helped, and on a warm day i have to put the a/c on.

Re: Battlefield 3 Review (1 year ago)
Why, why do they feel the need to go the way of other FPS titles and add a single player.
1942 was a winner because it had great MP with vehicles and 64 players. BF2 followed that with MP only again and sold incredibly well and earned a 9 in a review from PALGN.
Such a shame to see that a poor SP, as well as this out of game sever browser bs, coupled with technical issues, has hurt the score it could of got if they had just gone MP only again. And thus probably turned many away to move on to MW3 or others.
I guess DICE and EA dont care, they've already got the sale...
Another main gripe for me is squads. There is only 8 squads allowed in BF3 compared to BF2's 9, also only 4 are allowed in each squad as opposed to 6. Now this adds up to exactly 32. Whats happens though when the server is full on a 64, and one squad is turned private with only 2 in it and all other squads are full. Well it means you cant squad up. Not once in my 2000+ hrs of playing BF2 did I ever think to myself, 6 players is too much in one squad.
Also joining with friends is annoyingly fustrating. Join on opposing sides, or even if you are on the same side, not in the same squad.
DICE have lost their original vision. The other added gameplay mechanics are fun and fresh, but have wrecked things that they already had done well. Time was wasted on the SP development

Commo Rose in BF3
Great to see. It was soo useful in BF2 I felt like BF3 was missing something when I played the Beta.
Useful for when you need to ask for ammo or a ride from someone not in your squad.

EPIC BUMP
So the new album, "Neighborhoods", came out on the 27th of last month.
Just started listening to it tonight and so far I like it.
Sounds like Blink's back!
Nice mix of uptempo punk rock, the Blink we all know and love with some slower (not too slow) songs, like the album is also taking inspiration from the same (re. "Miss You") that inspired their last album, "Blink-182".
Video for Up All Night is a bit typical, not of Blink, but bands in general. Would of loved some of that theatrics from the guys we seen in their other videos.

Loving Caspian Border. Mainly the conquest mode as this is the way battlefield was meant to be played.
Had to turn my settings down to medium just to get >30fps... was really hoping my twin gtx 550 ti would handle better than that. oh well, in a few months when i have some spare $$ might buy in the $250 price range.

Re: What really ticks you off? (1 year ago)
What is more likely to have done it is the heater. The computer contributed but really should not be that much, cause even if he leaves it on all the time, it should be using next to nothing of its resources when its just downloading so means alot less power usage than when playing a game or rendering/editing video.
Most heaters are rated at 2400w, which is 10amps @ 240v, the max you can draw through a wall outlet. Granted the wattage probably varies depending on thermostat setting maybe down to 1400w (6amps). Idling computers will probably be about 1-2 amps tops.
I would stand up to him and make him foot the bill for what you believe he has upped the bill by from the last one. If he is the only one with the heater, he looses as that is basically what you find in a bedroom that draws a great deal more power than other things like, lamp, lights, clocks, etc. If you had a room full of common things, they probably still would not draw the same amount of power as one heater.
Edit: but as said it will be hard to point out in a court of law. Can be the electric water heater has something wrong and is on alot longer than normal. Perhaps the fridge compressor has lost some gas and is working harder..
My HTPC is on 24/7 and is hasnt raised the parents bill by much over the year. Its not used for anything intensive though so hence it doesnt use much so the fact his comp is on 24/7 i would let slide personally.
