Just an FYI - Dick Smith Woden would not honour the discounted $49 price on Lego Indy. They said that if you look closely at the advert, it says that the Wii edition is $49 - and the other editions are 'available' but not for that price.

Pretty annoyed with them.
Played it on 360 this morning (the demo) and it's absolutely incredible. Only played single-player but loved it - can't wait to buy the full game and get some 4 player co-op happening. Some of the firefights are just epic.

While I agree generally with what most people are saying here, I can't help but think that the makers of Fallout 3 should have known that there were going to be problems. From what I understand, the game features the player injecting himself with drugs to improve health etc, and this is where the major problem lies.

The Aussie classification board has for a long time banned games where players inject drugs or use drugs to improve their performance in inappropriate ways. Games that come to mind include Narc and Blitz.
Fallout, Fallout 2, Max Payne, Max Payne 2. There's 4 games off the top of my head where you use drugs to improve your performance. Hell, MP even had the sound effect of popping a plastic container full of pills when you used the painkillers.
If any console deserves to be hacked, and any software deserves to be pirated, it's Nintendo. They have, for many years, treated PAL territories like rubbish. We get releases MONTHS after Japan and the US. Trauma Center is still not released here - and it was a release day title in the US!

To those who have been doing the right thing, by importing (and thus paying for) games and using the Freeloader to experience some great software which has not yet been released here - please Google 'wiikey' and pay the $10 to have your console back. Whilst you CAN pirate with a chipped Wii, you can choose not to - and can still import and pay for your software legitimately.

Region locking anything - software, movies, etc, is utterly disgusting. The only reason for it is to enforce pricepoints on different territories. That it's remotely legal in first-world countries is utterly astounding.

PS3 got it right - no coding. The 360, at the very least, does worldwide releases of software so that no-one misses out. The Wii, and Nintendo in general, has a long, long way to go.

Fuck Nintendo.

Shit.. if you count all of the DVD movies I've imported, plus the handful of games.. I'm up for circa $10,000,000 AUD. Looks like I'm in trouble.

No, PS3 fanboys will profess their hatred for Gears too. Even though deep down, they know it's a really great game. Gears was my 2nd favourite game of 2007, after Bioshock. And easily the best co-op experience I've ever had - better than 4 player Halo 3, even.
At least when I hold the game in my hand (finally), I can look at it and think "this guy put every ounce of creativity that he could muster onto this little plastic disc". Makes it feel like I'm getting my $120 worth.

some might argue that this is an argument for the rating system working as it should... encouraging developers to self-censor their titles to a level of appropriateness...............
No arguments here. I actually don't have a problem with Rockstar censoring the game to comply with Australian requirements - many game publishers have had to do this for years in Germany (Return to Castle Wolfenstein doesn't have Nazis, it has some undead cultists).

I have two issues here.

1. Rockstar are not telling people what has been cut - yet expect Australians (and now Kiwis) to just buy the game, without knowing what they're actually getting.
2. The Australian GGs will not bring an 18+ rating into this country, to 'save the children' or something retarded like that.

The OFLC is only doing their job. If there was an 18+ rating, they'd glady rate GTA IV Uncut as an 18+ title, I'm sure. They're just working within their guidelines and have no personal, 'who will think of the children' agenda.

Gotta find one on ebay now.. but how do we know if that will be a PAL UK one? It's all honk kong sellers selling it but i cant say i trust them much cos when i order from playasia i sometimes get an australian edition.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/ would be the closest chance of getting a 'real UK edition that you'd have, then.
So very, very pissed off right now.

Let this be the impetus for Australian gamers to start writing to their local representatives in the Federal Government, rather than (as I have) just bitching and moaning on forums.

Ditto... *facepalm*

Nice of them to just cancel the order instead of simply giving us the option. I'd rather keep my order for now until I can find a UK spec. ed to order or decide that it's impossible and just keep go with the cut version.

Bah.
Same here - I now have NO limited edition GTA IV pre-ordered. And given that all the pre-orders are out (in Australia anyway), thanks to GPstore, I'll now have to get a standard edition.

Pretty damn weak.
Just got the dreaded email from gpstore.co.nz -

Hi Phillip,

We have been informed today that New Zealand will be receiving the same version of Grand Theft Auto IV as Australia.

As you have placed your order after Rockstar announced that the Australian version was edited, we are assuming that you will no longer require the game to be shipped from us, as we can't supply you with an uncut version.

The last thing we want to do is supply you with a product that does not meet your needs and we've therefore taken the liberty of removing your GTA4 order from our web site.

We certainly hope we can be more helpful to you in the future! icon_smile.gif

Kind Regards,

What the hell kind of link is that? Is that an article, or a forum post or what?

If this is true, there's going to be a whole lot more grumpy gamers out there. Makes me all the more curious as to what's been cut though.
That page is a fake. It was written by a guy on OCAU. Here's the link (with his admission of being a smartarse at the bottom of the page).

NZ has an R18+ rating, so they will get the full game. Imagine their outrage if they got a borked version of the game just because they're geographically close to Australia!

Hey I just bought it off Gameplanet in NZ and paid $178.08 NZ dollars.....any idea what that would be in AUS?

Anyways happy it's over and done with. The aussie censored piece of crap can suck it, I don't care what's cut cuz even if it's a single letter off a particular sentence then i'm not getting the superior version of the product and I pretty much always gotta have superior version, plus I like my sex, gore, nudity, foul language.....basically anything adult oriented!
http://www.ozforex.com/ says about $152 AUD. And I completely agree with all points made.

Well said.

Chances they just removed the cutting of prostitutes.
Imagine seeing the statue of David, but they cut off his wang. I mean, they just cut off the wang, right? The vast majority of the statue is still in place, it 'plays the same' but is missing a wang. So it's still the same, right? WRONG.

What you're saying here is "I accept minor edits to a work of art so it's palatable for ALL people who are allowed to view it". Rockstar's intention was that you see the WHOLE game. They have edited this version, and GTA3 and Vice City, to cater for all viewers in Australia aged 15 and over.

If there was an 18+ rating in Australia, then you would have access to the FULL GAME. This version is not the FULL GAME of GTA IV and as such, no-one, over the age of 15, should buy it. At worst, there should be a 15+ version and an 18+ version, and only 18+ people can buy the full game. If you're 15+, it's the cut version.

The lack of an 18+ rating is an absolute embarassment to this country. I support an 18+ rating and I strongly support ENFORCEMENT of that 18+ rating by the use of fines and/or gaol time for those who break the rules/break the rules repeatedly (that is, companies who sell to minors over and over).

I have calmed down a bit, and I will say that as long as they have not altered the blood engine, I will probably be fine. I never bothered with hookers in previous games.
I'm cancelling my Aussie pre-order and have just pre-ordered with gpstore.co.nz. After shipping, it will cost about $2 more for the uncensored version (limited edition) than the Australian version.

I'm 32, and I'm not going to be treated like a child by my own government.
Re: $poon changes (5 years ago)
I think that the general response to my suggestions here is simply 'You are wrong'.

I'll stop watching the topic and just get on with my day. It's clear to me that the mods like the way it is, and don't want to change it. I'd probably feel the same way if it served my needs well too.

Thanks for your time.

It rather seems like this entire thing has sprung from that topic; if you have a problem with the conduct of one particular poster (mod or not surely, I see no difference), why not just PM them? No offence, but it really just seems like a rant/serious business to me; except #4, I think that one is a pretty damn good idea.
All points actually sprung from several weeks of watching how the system works, who plusses, who negs, and why. I spent 20 minutes of my day writing a measured, clear-headed post suggesting some things that could be improved. The immediate negative response to my post by two of the moderators disappoints me, to say the least.

I don't know what rant/serious business means, by the way.

Speaking purely for myself here (and as a Mod), I am careful and selective of any negative votes I hand out - and I tend to think that by and large the other Mods/Staff/Admin are too. In fact, by and large, most users on the site deal out far more positive votes than negative ones.
http://palgn.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=25558

Theory is negging basically anyone who has replied with a suggestion for a name. Most of the suggestions are pretty funny (Electric Boogaloo was hilarious!) and he's just negged everything left and right. I really cannot imagine why.
Re: $poon changes (5 years ago)
The ratings system on PALGN, and how to fix it.
by cmdwedge

After being on the receiving end of some negs and pluses, I've had a think about how the system could work better.

1. Moderators cannot rate any post (or cannot neg a post).

Reasoning:
Many of the users on this site are younger people (early teens, etc). They have a tendency to look up to the Mods of the site. This is normal. However, if a Moderator negs a posts, it almost automatically becomes gang **** on the post - all of the Mod 'followers' believe that agreeing with the Mod will somehow garner them praise or friendship. It works the other way around too - when a Mod gives a plus to a post, you will see a whole bunch (often the same users) quickly plus the post too, whether they have read it or not.

Solution:
Moderators should be very careful about negging a post. This gives people a public 'go for it' to smash the user into the ground and abuse them - a forum-based 'schoolyard bullying' effect. If the post simply warranted a neg because the comment was disagreed with (person A didn't like the game, so Mod B negs it), then only normal users should be negging/plusing the post. If, however, the post was offensive or in any other way unsatisfactory for the site as a whole, the Mod should be PMing the user and/or deleting the post (if it's really serious). Perhaps editing it into a more suitable post. Simply negging the post, without a true reason given, will not set the user on the right path in the future.

2. You cannot neg a post without posting a response to the post.

Reasoning:
Oftentimes, a post will be negged (once or twice, or perhaps many times) but with absolutely no rationale behind it. The poster can be completely in the dark about what they did wrong or what exactly in their post was disagreed with.

Solution:
Only allow negging of a post if the very same user has also posted at least one reply in the same thread (not necessarily a reply to that post). This will create a more constructive environment for discussions.

3. Take negging a post far more seriously.

Reasoning:
This follows on from point number 2. Negging shouldn't be used just because you don't agree with a post. If someone says 'I didn't like this game' and explains what they didn't like about it - don't neg it down. As long as they've explained their position, even if it's a bit silly, then they've really done everything right. Negging them down just because you have a difference of OPINION is pretty harsh.

Solution:
Use the Neg button sparingly. Just because the user doesn't like the same game/console/pizza/movies/TV show as you, doesn't make them a bad person. Think about how you'd feel if the user negged you down just because you happened to like 'Family Guy' but they didn't.

4. Go easy on new users.

Reasoning:
If a user is new to the site, cut them some slack. Remember that you were new once, too. If a user gets negged down for every post they make - they're not going to be likely to return to the site and contribute, are they?

Solution:
Just the same way that a user cannot vote for their first 25 posts - don't allow anyone else to vote for their posts for their first 25 posts, or even better, only allow plus Votes for the first 25. This will encourage good posts but not scare away new people to the site. If a post is offensive, report it to a Mod. If you just don't agree or think that the post is a bit stupid/angry/childish then instead of negging them, either PM them or click 'Reply' and post a measured, polite response. No new blood = a very stale site indeed.

I'd love to hear some feedback on these ideas.

Thanks, wedge.
