Re: 2011 + 2012: The "Year of Retro Gaming" Project (1 year ago)
Good review as always Irvyne.
I've pimped it out before but if you have anymore interest in Earthbound it's well worth checking out Clan of the Grey Wolf's website. Roo's review of the series and game itself is incredibly well researched and may answer any lingering questions you have over the game.
The only point I disagreed with was the aesthetics. I really didn't have a problem with the retro look of the game as I felt it suited the game's tone & sense of humour. With that said, the graphics really did look fuzzy on your video - I don't remember them looking that bad when I finished it about six months ago.
Everything else I agreed with - especially the gameplay which I felt was basically 'use strongest attack as often as possible' instead of devising a smart strategy. I enjoyed everything else, especially the adventure aspect of it (eg. Using the right items on the right person to move the story forward) and some of the crazy ideas and worlds was a lot of fun.
Also thought the Pokemon comparison was spot on - they both have a similar sense of humour.
Keep up the good work.

ROUND 3
GO
Donkey Kong 64
Okay, I know the Nintendo 64 was lacking quality content and in comparison to Tonic Trouble, Quest 64 & 40 Winks this game stands out as the grand puhba of adventure/platforming but looking back this game is so incredibly half-arsed and base.
Where to begin? How about the gameplay. Donkey Kong 64...honestly doesn't feel like a Donkey Kong game. Okay, I know there isn't a standard of measure when it comes to Donkey Kong but most people identify Donkey Kong with the Country series on the SNES.
From 2 onwards, Country had found it's own rhythmn and had gone away from the archaic arcade design of the original. What the series became known for was it's varied and creative gameplay elements, secrets & amazing music.
Compare that to DK64 where the gameplay feels like a cheap Banjo Kazooie knock off (without the personality), secrets aren't really secret and the music is really just standard 3D platforming music without any real theme.
But wait! DK64 was a HUGE game back in the day. That's true, but that's also apart of the problem for me. The game tries to sell you on just how big the worlds are - how you need warp pads to get by and that there are so many things to do in each world.
That all sounds good on paper but when you get down to the nitty gritty it really isn't. Bananas don't feel like the golden prize as they should as they're obtained as simply as simply ground-pounding a specific switch, completing a relatively simple mini game or defeating one specific enemy. Keep in mind that it's virtually impossible to die in the game as you have 12 hit points and health is readily available and the game lacks that necessary challenge that makes you feel like you've accomplished something. Essentially, it's like beating your 5 year old cousin in a race - kind of pathetic really.
But it's a family game! Made 10+ years ago, surely you're being unfair? Look, if Banjo Kazooie, Mario 64 & Mystical Ninja can still hold some relative challenge or at least retain some quality than surely a title of this calibre can too.
I'm probably just talking to myself so I'll only address two more points here. Firstly the new characters. Completely unnecessary additions to the series who were either cheap knock offs of other characters (Tiny = Dixie, Chunky = Baby) or just completely annoying (Lanky...). I don't think the game required THAT many playable characters AND should have focussed on other areas.
Areas such as world design. Again, it's just completely devoid of creativity. This is what we have folks - Jungle, Desert, Industrial, Water, Forest, Cave & Haunted all basic platforming world tropes and with the exception of the Forest which at least attempts to do something different with the day/night feature is all essentially base.
Ultimately, I don't HATE this game but I certainly don't like it and I'm not sure what's worse. Something that just flat out sucks, or something that turns out disappointing. At least with the former, your expectations are met or potentially exceeded, when it comes to the latter...it's just always going to be a negative response.
In the end, DK64 just shows that a game doesn't have to be BIG to be GOOD. What it truly needs is some creativity, possibly some innovation and even some personality. I have so many memories of BK despite it's simplicity yet only have a few of DK64, I believe that says it all.
NEXT TIME
Let the Rare bullying continue as I set my sights on one of their more original titles. The bug-slaying, ewok saving adored Jet Force Gemini.

Scumbag Roland
Ignores his own staffs problem and doesn't apologise for anything.
Openly apologises on everyone elses behalf to a known troll who has blatantly broken the advertisement rules.
I for one want it to be known that I won't apologise to FalconeDude. He deserved whatever he got on here and then some and would hope he'd spend the rest of his time online on his third rate forum.

Re: What game are you playing? (1 year ago)
Persona 3 Still grinding away. I think I'm in the middle of the summer and I'm currently tuning the sports coach. It's all pretty innocent but she appears to be into my skinny emo kid.
Final Fantasy VII A discussion on another forum made me want to check this sucker out. I'd only played this title a couple of times and only got about as far as the first town (rental of some sort). I might stick with it but so far it really doesn't age all that well (IMO). Half the time I don't know where the character is and sometimes I really don't want to know #ugly. The music doesn't seem to fit some scenes (Cloud makes a bad ass get away on a train and the music is the same as the dour town) plus there's so many silly cliches. Childhood promises, shooting stars, bad hair-dos. I'm sure it's only early days and there's some kick ass moments coming up but I'm beginning to side with the 'overrated' brigade.
But what I'm really here for...
Animal Crossing I finally found my AC memory card and decided to check my town out for the first time in apparently...84 months. Time sure flies. Basically looking back I was a massive horder who's entire house was infested with cockroaches and annoying gollywogs that would make freaky girations. I cleared it all out and now I've turned my character into a fitness freak...with a mother f**king master sword & Donkey Kong Jr. Maths.
Plus, I was so thrilled to see my two favourite residents still chilling. Rolf, the vulgar tiger & Bob the gay cat were still as fun as ever. Apparently Bob was being teased for being 'weird' so I had to give him an ego boost and Rolf wanted basically everything in my backpack plus a letter, bless.
Such a nostalgia rush and it's one of those games that hits JUST the right amount of notes with me. I probably won't play it again for another 7 years come the weekend but the revisit was well worth it.

Re: Movies (Rules on First Page) (1 year ago)
I really didn't think much of 50/50. Solid film, good chemistry between JGL/Rogen but pretty standard all things considered.

Round 2
FIGHT!
Pokemon Diamond
I should probably stop picking on the JRPG genre. As much as their character designs rarely interest me I enjoy a good experience and I can never say enough good things about Final Fantasy IX or Persona 4 (to name a few).
Anywho, let me cut to the chase before admeister cuts me to ribbons.
Diamond is the weakest entry in the Pokemon series. The new additions sucked, the gameplay and story felt incredibly recycled but those complaints don't compare to it's biggest issue.
IT IS SO SLOW!
Compared to Ruby, this game plays at a snails pace and it practically feels like the game is running on slow mo when you watch the health slowly deplete after each attack.
I am so glad they got their act together with Black as the series was certainly on a slippery slope with Diamond.
Up next: Donkey Kong 64.
We're coming for you! Sucka!

Yeah it was a pretty ordinary PPV.
I didn't mind the Cage match. It was just too short and the finish was really anti-climatic.
Cena/Kane didn't accomplish anything.
Punk/Ziggler was a good match, but they've had plenty of good matches. Lauranaitis' involvement was weird and confusing and made Ziggler look like a loser.
The Rumble was a mixed bag. There were a couple of really cool comedy spots, Kharma return was sweet and the finish was fantastic but so many spots were wasted on jobbers or non active wrestlers which made the match drag on in sections. Also thought The Big Show ruined half the match by dumping The Miz and Cody Rhodes as if they were jobbers. It completely ruined any kind of momentum they would have gained by doing an awesome job in the Rumble.
Average Rumble, pretty much deserved for all the crappy booking heading into the show.

Games Everybody Else Loves But You Don't (1 year ago)
I suspect this thread has already been done but I can't find anything within the past year so I thought I'd get this going!
As gamers we've probably played hundreds of titles within our lifetime. Some we've grown to love and others for whatever reason just weren't our cup of tea. What are some games or even series that you just couldn't get into?
I'll start.
Tales of Vesperia
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the gameplay of this game and thought the dialogue for the most part was fine - some of the skits and exchanges were great and I enjoyed how the players bounced off each other.
My issues? Apart from the usual cliche anime design I just thought the story was incredibly base and at times poorly constructed. A lot of interesting sub-stories were randomly dropped, barely touched on or had really ordinary resolutions. Some of the twists were 100% recycled off of ToS and the final boss was probably the biggest let down I've encountered in an RPG.
So what are some of yours?

Plus, more likeable doesn't suggest a complete 180 which is what I want.
Re: Triple J's Hottest 100 2012 (1 year ago)
Glad to see M83 & Lana Del Rey get some recognition. Do I care she gave herself a name change? Nope. It's like pitching a fit at David Bowie or Iggy Pop.
Apart from that, it's a very predictible list. It would have been interesting to have seen where Pumped Up Kicks would have finished had it not been rushed onto the 2011 list.
Oh and while everyone is complaining.
Only 1 Lykke Li song? Zero Fleet Foxes?
Awesome-o: Lame.

Re: What game are you playing? (1 year ago)
Fire Pro Wrestling Returns Hardcore wrestling fans swear this is the best wrestling game in history but I don't agree. While it has plenty of positive features the core gameplay itself just doesn't feel as rewarding as the AKI series. Still, a bit of fun but I don't think I'll be sticking to this very long despite downloading a current save that has pretty much every wrestler at the moment.
Tales of Abyss Early days but I've got to ask does the main character become anymore likeable or am I stuck with the least likeable protagonist since Tidus.
Final Fantasy IX Still my favourite FF. It's just so much fun, rewards exploration, switches the gameplay up well, a really colourful world filled with anthromorphic animals and other goodies that turn an otherwise fairly boring series into something enjoyable. Just arrived into the second city but really enjoying the nostalgia trip.
Persona 3 I've grinded this game to death. 40 hours in and I've only defeated 3 Moon bosses. I think I'm just going to just try and rush through this game as quickly as possible as I'm not really enjoying the experience.

Thank god Paul isn't considered a Cornetto film.
Such an ordinary film.

I don't think future generations will look at Ocarina as the series magnum opus like the current generation does but I think they'll appreciate it in terms of concept and pacing.

Hobo With A Shotgun
Kind of self explanatory. If you've seen the trailer you know what to expect. The only thing I can really comment on is the ridiculous use of filters. I think filters have a place but in a movie like Hobo I just found them too distracting. The campy villains were the highlights for me as well as the ending.
Kind of tired of these 'We're laughing with you' B movies and just wish they would focus more on putting on the best show they can.

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Review (1 year ago)
If there was one 3D Zelda that runs the risk of ageing poorly it's Skyward Sword.
Nintendo appear determined to make motion controlled gameplay work and I can see them using SS as a sort of platform for them to advance not only the Zelda series but also the motion controls themselves. 10 years from now I can still see people enjoying Ocarina of Time for what it is but I can't say the same for Skyward and can see people cringing during certain sections and some of the primitive uses of motion control.
It will still have it's fans, especially those who realise that Nintendo made the right decision to go in the direction Skyward did but I believe the overall concensus will look down on this game. I wouldn't feel too bad for Skyward, it could be worse, you could be Twilight Princess and nobody will really remember you fondly except for the furry community.

Zelda Twilight Princess
Worthy entry in the series but the realistic setting mixed with the slow Twilight Realm elements prevented me from engaging with this game as I would have liked. Dungeons were terrific, everything else was underwhelming with the exception of the couple Epona rescue/escort sections which there was far too little of.
Item dispensation left a lot to be desired delaying the acquisition of exclusive items until the game was nearly over and then basically making them useless except for that particular dungeon. The characters were also severely underdeveloped. I didn't give a rats about Zelda or Link's friend who just so happened to have...AMNESIA. With the exception of Midna, none of these characters had an interesting personality and in a game such as this that is striving to be more realistic it does sap some enjoyment out of it.
Still, it's Zelda and the dungeons certainly make it worth playing through. It's just a shame everything else feels like a chore.
Zelda Skyward Sword
A definite step up from TP, weaving a fun fresh mythology of it's own with a far more interesting cast of characters and a far more vibrant setting. There seems to be two camps when it comes to this game pro or neg motion controls and ultimately...I found a way to fall in the middle. When they worked, I really enjoyed them. Yeah, sometimes it felt too gimmicky with enemies holding their weapons in unrealistic ways to essentially say 'hit me here stupid' but when it clicked it really clicked. But when they did it...oh boy did it become frustrating. No other move caused me to curse more than the thrust. I think I had a 40% success rate with that move and boy did it hurt me when it came to that third dungeon. The harp also gave me nightmares, especially when I was trying to get my groove on with the bar maid at the ol' Pumpkin Pub. Curse that judgemental crowd.
Padding has been a constant complain with this game and at first I thought people were just being far too critical...but by the 6th dungeon I could completely understand. That escort mission in particular was probably one of the worst excuses for time wasting in a video game I've ever seen. I also felt like the hero songs, while also padding were really fun additions (well at least the 2nd and 3rd part) that should have been included earlier in a different fashion. A stealth mission upon entering the second world would have been a great way to break the gameplay up so early on when it really felt formulaic.
I enjoyed the interface and how easy it was to access my inventory and I liked how they incorporated a very basic upgrade feature. I hope Zelda games continue to go down this route and really reward exploration through vast worlds and towns.
I think in the end, that's my disappointment. In terms of the Zelda series, this is a good addition that should put the series on the right track. Unfortunately, I feel it's behind the times and the lack of alternative towns, worlds and challenges prevent this game from achieving the excellence it otherwise could have. A good game worth checking out...but I don't think it's really worth the 35+ hours it takes to complete. Not in this day or age.

The lead up to the Ship and the Ship itself made it my favourite section in the game, beating the minecart section first go was insane, just an absolute fluke given the speed Link was going.
Then again, I enjoyed most of the dungeons. I don't think there wasn't any bad dungeons in this game.

Where is this thread? Poor form guys.
Merry Christmas PalGN! I'm not an active poster (aka spammer) as I used to be but I always enjoy visiting and seeing one of the best communities evolve and watch posters grow up before our very eyes. There's very few conflicts on here, everyone seems really civil and in a world where such a virtue is never guaranteed it's great to find solace in such a place.
Merry Christmas guys and I hope you all had a terrific day.

What's the best price I can find for a Nintendo 3DS?
Re: WWE '12 Review (1 year ago)
For mine, one of the better releases in recent times and I was glad I actually felt challenged.
Still plenty of areas that need to be addressed for future instalments but this is the first time in a long time I feel as if the series is on the right track.
I'd only recommend it to WWE fans and even then I'd tell them to wait for it to drop down in price. There's no way you should pay full price for this game. In fact, renting the game may even satisfy you. RTWM only takes a solid day or two's worth of gameplay and even then it's really not THAT worthwhile.

Re: Movies (Rules on First Page) (1 year ago)
Must be going through a Gosling phase...
Drive (2011)
Gosling leads a talented cast through a typical noir thriller romp. It's a good film and gets everything right but it doesn't really bring anything new to the table. What did stand out about this movie to me was the soundtrack. So 80's, so French I loved it.
A lot is being made of Gosling's performance, but Brooks was the star here for me.
Crazy Stupid Love (2011)
I never thought I'd give a ensemble romantic comedy a chance but this film made me glad I did. I watched through the entire thing and while I found the last 3rd to kind of drag on I got caught up in the fun of it, especially the twists which just came as a total surprise to me as I didn't think this would be the type of film but it added to my overall enjoyment.
The only other criticism I could make was the son character. I get why he was in there BUT his scenes were really kind of creepy and I don't like how his story concludes.
