Also, I may be what is considered to be an 'outsider' these days with regards to this community but even so it still pains me to see it in the state it is in. While it would be easy to argue that I moved on (without actually advertising where), I always viewed PALGN as my Internet home and it is because of the community -- the staff, the posters, everyone -- that I feel this way. Things may be incredibly different now to what they were a few years ago, but that doesn't mean I don't have an attachment to this site and these forums.

In fact, I wish (and this will probably come across as egotistical or something -- it's not meant to) that I could sit here and promise a return and that would fix everything, both on the forums and the website itself, but that is just being unrealistic and besides, with or without me the current issues that this place is facing is part of a much bigger picture. But even so, the fact that such drama and controversy is happening right now -- regardless of whether people are behaving maturely or appropriately or not -- proves just why everyone is here: because this community is unlike anything else, old or current, and it is the people (rather than the actual forum or site itself) that make PALGN as a collective whole what it is. Even if it does die, none of us will lose that feeling or forget that sentiment, whether you're an active member now or, like me, you were a few years ago and for whatever reason moved on or stopped posting.

It may be a bit abrupt or perhaps even absurd to see me come in here, after years of silence, and post as if I never left or as if I know the extent of everything going on. I don't, obviously, but even so I think all of you can put aside your feelings on these current events and reflect 100% positively on your time here as part of the community. Remember that people -- no matter what happens, and no matter who it involves. If the place dies tomorrow or remains alive in whatever format, it is the people who keep it in our memories, nothing else.

Well it did get me to visit.

I haven't been here for a while, you guys all know that, but even so I don't see why a compromise between the two can't be made. People over 5000 posts, generally speaking, are the people who have been here for years and who are the exemplary posters of this forum, but there are some who are below the 5k limit who also deserve recognition, and since you guys all know who the decent posters are around here it should be pretty obvious who deserves VIP status and who doesn't. The system should reward the people who are very important to this community, while the rest of the members should be following the example and posting maturely, respectfully and not wasting their time trying to spam the forums or whatever. It's not about post count, it shouldn't be about favourites or who is friends with who -- it's about conduct and ultimately sharing a passion with a group of like-minded individuals.

That said, I can understand the change and besides, I don't exactly have a say anymore considering how long an absence I've had.
Re: VIP changes (3 years ago)
I'm so awesome I get included without even knowing about it.

Perhaps a ploy to get me back? Yeah, unlikely -- who would want that?
^ How about not? What tracks, pray tell, would you use to replace some of the most popular and respected race tracks in the world with? Not having Suzuka, Laguna Seca, Silverstone and the like in the game is like not having Ferrari, Porsche and BMW in the game -- it's just not logical to take out such big names just because they've been in previous versions and may be getting 'old' for some people.

Now if Turn 10 added some new tracks (of which there are some notable omissions in Forza 3) alongside the old legendary ones, then that'd be a different and welcome story.

But then, they did add new tracks into the mix such as Catalunya, so really, I don't see anything to complain about. Especially not when similar games, like main rival Gran Turismo, have been using the same tracks for much longer than Forza has. The thing is though, that's not a problem -- it's a good thing. Keep familiarity in play while players get used to the newer inclusions. It's striking the balance that's key, not picking and choosing to satisfy a few.
Re: Forza 3 (3 years ago)
Regulars around here would know all too well that Forza is one of my favourite franchises ever, and naturally anticipation for the third iteration was extremely high.

Well let's all now take a moment to point and laugh at Nismo and the fact that, on the very day that he received Forza 3 in the mail, his Xbox 360 decided to display the E74 error. Yep, how much more convenient and awesome can you get?

I had to laugh though. I got the game early on Tuesday (release was meant to be Friday the 23rd) and when I got over the surprise of it coming so early, I braced myself for an epic race session later that night. When I turned the 360 on and saw the error, I laughed, thought to myself "Well then, guess it's back to Uncharted 2 and Metroid Prime Trilogy then," and went out to get some dinner. Came back afterwards and somehow managed to get the console on and, of course, promptly played the game. Unfortunately it had/has artifacting across the screen so it wasn't ideal, but at least I got to play it. I also managed to play it on the Wednesday and Thursday, after somehow getting the console to work again on both days.

I still have no idea how I did that. I haven't been able to get it on since and I definitely need to buy a new Core/Arcade model, but yeah, that's my (lame) story. Of all the months, weeks and even days that my console had to break, it had to be Forza 3 day. Boy I'm lucky. icon_wink.gif
Nah, that must have been the imposter Nismo. Why would I lie? I'm Canberran. icon_shifty.gif

Holy crap on a stick, Nismo is making a post on PALGN!

Joseph seriously man, milestone or not, only a select few people would be able to get me to log into the forums after such a long hiatus and you are most definitely one of them. As you are already aware you have helped me through various things as well, perhaps more than you know. Our regular conversations almost every night has not only entertained me throughout those hours when everyone else is asleep, but has also given me someone whom I can talk to whenever I need to, someone I can share my thoughts with and someone I can ask for advice (and attention!) from at any time. You have always been there for me and returning that for you is the least I can do.

And of course, before we started to converse regularly you were helping me without you realising it via your brilliant bargains articles. You have saved me and everyone here a lot of money over the years and I think I speak on behalf of this entire community when I say that we are very thankful for it.

So congratulations on your milestone mate, but more importantly thank you for becoming and being an absolutely wonderful friend. Oh and again, your cheque is in the mail... icon_wink.gif
Two quick notes from what has been posted above;

1. I found it interesting to see Michael from The Wire was now in the new 90210 and that alone made me consider watching it. Due to not knowing anything about the show though (both old and this new version) and hearing mixed thoughts about the newer version, I decided to pass though.

2. I also giggled a little while reading your post Sin, I can definitely understand why you have come to your conclusions and I came to similar ones when I was in your position but damn are you in for some nice shocks.

Now that is out of the way, GODDAMN I am behind with my TV shows at the moment. I have like 4 episodes of Prison Break to watch, every single episode that has aired from Heroes' latest season so far, and again for Fringe, the entirety of The Shield season 1, most of Veronica Mars season 1, two episodes of Oz season 1 left, Top Gear Australia and catch up with the UK show, season 1 of The Sopranos, every episode of the latest season of the 1upShow, 4 episodes of Good Game, every episode of Generation Kill...

Er yep, lots of TV to watch. What's that, like 50 hours worth? And to think, it's not including Cap's latest recommendations in True Blood (must watch for me given Anna Paquin...) and Sons Of Anarchy.

As for the latest Formula 1 race, I actually didn't watch it. Why? I had the race spoiled not too long after Bathurst ended in a news update so I figured there was no point watching. Congrats to Alonso for making it two races in a row though and it was good to see them at Fuji Speedway too. Suzuka will be missed though.

*sigh* Now to start playing catch up with all these shows...

Oooh, let me know when you are ready for multiplayer man. I have been meaning to start working towards those achievements too but hesitate because none of my friends are interested in playing it anymore because they're focusing on other games.

Chimp, welcome to the Geo Wars Crack Club. You'll find a bed over in that corner *points* for when you're far too high to concentrate on consuming that addictive, geometric love.
I have recently added two games to my completed list.

Grid - Finished up the career mode the other day with all 51 event trophies. My driver rank and my team rank were both rank 1 for the last 15 events or so and I had a decent team mate as well who would generally place within the top 5 with no problem. Found the game to be pretty good and definitely worth playing, but a few weird things bring it down (stuff I have mentioned elsewhere on these forums). Now working on the two online achievements because once I have those, I will have the full 1k for this game.

Eternal Sonata - Finished this as well and found it to be quite an enjoyable JRPG. As I keep on mentioning when I speak about the game, the art direction is absolutely stunning and with every new location I was amazed with just how damn gorgeous it all is. Combine that with the awesome soundtrack (Chopin's pieces especially) and yeah, it was great. Story was a bit weird and random at times, but it came through in the end making references to stuff I had completely forgotten about and wrapping things up reasonably nicely. The Mysterious Unison was an absolute prick to do though and frustrated me to no end. Thanks go to Ecky for putting up with my frustrated messages while I tried finishing that part of the game. icon_wink.gif
I still have another playthrough to go so I can finish up the achievements.
To those who have Lost Odyssey and have completed it and its achievements, did you guys use a guide and if so could you point me in the direction of it?

Once I finish Eternal Sonata I will be playing Lost Odyssey and as it is a RPG and therefore a long game, I would really like to maximise game/achievement potential during my playthrough(s). Thanks in advance.
I didn't read the actual NeoGaf thread so if something is said there that I didn't see, my apologies for this wasted post.

I find it interesting that the guy showed a link (if you will) to his website because it might be shooting himself in the foot. I mean, he has a review copy and is showing it off and at the same time it also is pirated and uploaded on the torrent sites? Wouldn't surprise me at all if Microsoft/Epic/whoever didn't give that particular site review copies in the future...

Anyway.

^ Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't Star Ocean 4 revealed at E3?

If so, then how is it an announcement for TGS?
^ Oddball hasn't appeared for me in either map, Blackout or Ghost Town and to be honest it is actually getting a little annoying now. I have been playing Multi-Team, Skirmish and etc. for a few nights now waiting for an Oddball match to appear on one of those maps and yeah, absolutely nothing. Patience is a virtue I guess.

Oh and for the rest of you who are wondering, Mythic map pack won't be out until next year.
Blink and anyone else with the game, keen to start/resume The Darkness boosting?

I'd really like to get it done.
^ Just gain experience from racing online. Not to be an arse or anything, but people who aren't very good at racing games could eventually get the achievements as you get a point or two no matter what place you come. But yeah, you need to keep gaining experience and it takes a long time.

Dude... I'm stunned. 29 times is insane! I'm guessing you must have kinda liked Prime.

And 2500 hours of PD? That's over 104 full 24 hour days worth of play time. 104 days! How is your N64 still functioning after that kind of punishment?
Missed this post.

My N64 still runs an absolute treat as I played another 3 hours of Perfect Dark the other day. icon_wink.gif Never had a problem with the console. As for Metroid Prime, that is my favourite game of all time so yeah you could say I like it. Perfect Dark had the honour until Prime released, so that's why both have received so much time over the years.
^ You know, sometimes I hate your ability to make games sound like they are absolute must have titles. Now I really wish I had a decent gaming PC so I could play the game too...

Anyway, what I am playing is the following:

GRID - I have mixed feelings about this game actually. I mean, for what it does it is quite good but there are a few things that I have found myself puzzled over during my time playing. For example, there is an achievement for setting a lap time around one of the game's tracks. I attempt this achievement using manual transmission and no assists (how I play all my racing games) and my best time was still 3 seconds off the required time for the achievement. Puzzled at this, I thought I would have a quick run with the assists on (but still manual) just for the sake of it and much to my surprise I beat the lap time by 3 seconds on my first lap. So 3 seconds ahead of the required time and 6 ahead of my best time without assists. I mean, what? Since when do assists make you go faster? Unrealistic, much?

It sort of makes sense though for the game because when racing online, I also found myself wondering why the opposition was taking some corners much faster than I was. From what I can gather, it is because the majority of people use assists while I don't. They also seem to handbrake into some corners, allowing the assists to do the work for them while they accelerate again. Interesting if I am right but rather annoying as well because if true, then I am being punished for preferring to use manual/no assists as I race. Lame, definitely. But it does make winning a race online slightly more sweeter when it happens.

Other than those two issues, the game has been pretty good and I should be done with it soon as I only have 6 events left in the career. I also plan on going for the two online achievements, so that will extend my time with the game a little bit more. Then I will have to wait for the upcoming DLC.

Halo 3 - New achievements or not, I would probably be playing this anyway as my friend and I always seem to play regularly. Anyway, the new achievements has been more incentive to play and I have had fun so far playing on the new(er) maps and also playing Objective based games. Usually I get bored with these rather quickly and I definitely prefer to be killing rather than flag capturing or whatever, but yeah playing them for the achievements hasn't been as bad as I was expecting so that has been nice.

Eternal Sonata - Put on hold when I first got GRID and then again when the 360 broke, I have now resumed this and am currently up to Chapter 5 (Nocturne). I still absolutely love the art direction for the game and still find myself in awe every time I come across a new location or even when revisiting another one. The story has progressed nicely so far and I am interested to see what happens next, but at the same time it certainly isn't as compelling a story as other JRPGs out there. Looking forward to playing it some more this weekend, perhaps even finishing it for the first time (have another run to do for the rest of the achievements) and seeing how the story develops.

Skate - Well, I should be playing this. Like Eternal Sonata it got put on hold for a while and now that I am back to playing 360 games, it still hasn't been played due to my time being spent on the others. I still plan on playing the hell out of this though and look forward to trying to finish the various challenges I was up to as well as playing some more online. Speaking of which, if anyone else (Fetidchimp, Eyce?) wants to go for a skate then by all means let me know.

Wow, long post is long so I suppose I should stop there. That's not including the XBLA titles like Geo Wars 2 and Braid that I am still playing, nor is it including Shenmue II that I started while the 360 was being repaired. I also now have Fallout, Fallout 2 and more importantly, The Longest Journey waiting to be played on my computer as well. Really looking forward to playing these, especially the latter one as I loved the demo and a lot of people have recommended it to me. It will feel weird playing games on a PC though, I must admit...

Crap, that's not including the games that release later this month either... Talk about a gaming overload!
'sif have a conversation about me without me. icon_razz.gif

Seriously though, does it matter who is better at what genre? I mean really? I know I am inconsistent with FPS games and that is fine with me, but at the same time I also know that I am good enough to finish something or reach a goal within the genre if I keep at it. If that wasn't the case then I wouldn't have Gears finished, Halo 3 finished (until the new achievements anyway) and so on. I aim on finishing Call of Duty 4 too, so I look forward to that challenge. Honestly though, I am sort of over the fact that every second game has guns in it these days.

As for racing games, yes I play them a lot and yes I've spent many hours going for the harder 1ks in Ridge Racer or whatever. Racing games are my forte after all and I'd rather have every single racing game on my card completed than I would any other game, but with that said the completionist in me will always see me try and complete game's achievements as much as I can.

That said, I guess you could say that I am sort of over them as well. Well not over them but I am not in as much of a rush to get them as I used to be. It's no secret that Gears 2 will become my main game when it hits (got 100,000 kills to get after all...) and if that means I don't get 1k in any other game in the meantime, then so be it. Fun before completion, thank you.

In saying that, I'm quite close to finishing GRID 1000/1000. Got two or so easy achievements left in the single player and then I will focus on racing online until I get Online Elite and Online Legend.

Seriously though, November 19th eh? Brilliant, I look forward to that day and experimenting with it. If I can pry myself away from Gears 2 that is...
Quick update on mine: All up it took 9 days from the day I sent it to arrive back to me repaired. I am fairly happy with that service and to have it back so quickly was nice, although I am still a little annoyed that I had to pay for the repair. Oh well, what is done is done and now she runs like a dream again so hopefully that is the last of my problems.

The other achievements will probably hit when the Mythic map pack does and no, no date or anything has been announced for that yet. As for those 3 people, unless they are all Bungie employees (which I seriously doubt), they would have cheated somehow to get the full 1750/1750 due to not having access to the new upcoming maps.

As for the achievements that are available now, they haven't been that hard to get thankfully. I have gotten the majority already and didn't have any hassles really. Kind of getting bored with constantly playing Multi-Team though to see if an Oddball match on Blackout will appear...
