Disappointments
Final Fantasy XII onwards
I've been a Final Fantasy fan since the release of FFVIII. It introduced me to RPG games and to this date, remains one of my all time favourites. Since then, I've gone back to play and finish all FF games from 1 through to XII. All of them bar XII and XIII have immersed me in their respective world and drew me into the story. Don't get me wrong, I thought XII was great. But it didn't have the same pull and magic the others did. It may have come down to the characters, the music as Nobuo Uematsu had left Square or the battle system, but whatever it was, it didn't feel like the usual traditional FF game. I didn't even bother much with XIII, a few hours into it, I really had no drive or interest to continue with the game. Again, it didn't pull me in like the previous games.
I thought, perhaps it could be that I'm getting over JRPG's but I didn't have any problems being immersed and drawn in when playing Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata or Tales of Vesperia. I guess my perpective of it is that Square is losing it's touch with the Final Fantasy series. They've lost key members of the team that made the first 10 so great or perhaps it's a matter that what the new team is producing isn't for me but I for one miss what the series use to be.
Nintendo Wii
First of, I really enjoyed various games that were released on Wii and had a lot of good times with the console. Zelda TP, Metroid 3, DK, SMG 1 & 2, Mario Strikers and others, have provided me with so much fun. I just really hated the fact that so much of the motion sensing aspect was forced on the gamer. I got over all the montion waggle pretty quickly and really wanted the option of just using the GC controller for most games. I understand that games like SMG required it as it played a big part on the game mechanics but for games such as DK, Zelda, Metroid I really wish I had the option to chose. Furthermore, I'm a bit of a graphics whore and while I have no complaints of the visuals on most Wii games, I know what Nintendo is capable in that department. SMG is a testament to that statement and given the Wii was packing similar hardware to the PS3 and Xbox, I have no doubt it would be one of the best looking games this Gen. I guess the bottom line for me is that I wished they really focused the Wii on easy development, hardware comparable to PS3 and Xbox, rather than focus on motion sensing.
Killzone 2
I was so hyped for this game when it was first announced and when the trailer first came out, it blew me away. It was a completely different feeling when I finally got the game and was left feeling very disappointed after all it's promise. I felt it to be so bland, uninspiring, clunky and such a chore to play. Needless to say, after a total of 3 hours of gameplay over 6 months, I just gave up and now it collects dust on my bookcase.
Wishes
Wii U
I really hope Nintendo delivers with this one. There isn't much information available on hardware specs but with rumours of a new Xbox being unvailed next year and Sony working on a new Playstation, I really hope they develop hardware that is on par with what the next gen console's are offering. I would also like to see an overhaul and futher development of their online network and also offer traditional game pads for all games.
Revenge of Nintendo IP's (F-Zero, Star Fox, Pilotwings and development of new IP's)
If the Wii U turns out as I'm hoping it does, I'd love to see Nintendo release games such as F-Zero, Star Fox and Pilotwings to their maximum potential. F-Zero GX has gone down as one of my all time favourite games. It was brutally hard, looked gorgeous, played exceptionally and had the music to go with it's insanity. I'd love to see this and the other mentioned Ninty IP's to make a return in HD glory. I'd also like for them to develop brand new IP's on the Wii U rather than releasing several Mario spin offs.
Star Wars Rogue Squadron
When Factor 5 went the way of the Dodo, the thing that bothered me the most was that any chance of another Rogue Squadron game was gone with them. That is unless some other developer can aquire the rights to series. In any case, I'd love to see it's triumphant return to the next gen consoles and blow us away like Rogue Squadron did on the Gamecube. Include some of Star Wars classic dogfights like the battle above Endor, Death Star trench, Battle of Hoth, Battle above Coruscant, Battle above Naboo and new missions.
Final Fantasy Remakes
I'd love to see FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX all remade for the next gen systems or on the next gen handhelds, similar to how FFIV, FFIII have been remade. Please let it happen damn it!
New Gradius, Ikaruga game
Konami and Treasure, you need to make this happen. Gradius V was brilliant and Ikaruga was utter madness. I would love to see shumps come out in force in the not too distant future.

Re: Final Fantasy X HD remake (1 year ago)
I loved FFX (albeit not my favourite and just manages to make it into my top 5) so this is welcomed news.
Like Benza, I'm surprised that this has been announced before a FFVII remake. But with all the PS2 HD remakes coming out, it makes sense as there would be less work to remake this than FFVII or the other PS1 final fantasy's.

Love your EVO MatBoy. Those Volk's? Whatever they are, they look awesome on your EVO.
Been fighting the temptation to buy a set of OZ racing superturismo's or 2008 STI Enkei's in anticipation of a Brembo brake upgrage which may happen in the next year or so. However, I want to do a few engine, handling and exhaust upgrades before I start thinking about brakes.
Some very nice rides that some forum members have.
Love your new MX-5 Spanca. I've always thought of them to be the best value for money roadster in the market.

Gears of War 3 for $69 in the new Kmart catalogue.
Here's a link to the Ozbargain link.
Awesome price for those who want it locally and can't wait for the 1+ week wait from overseas sellers.

Re: What game are you playing? (1 year ago)
Pilotwings Resort
Pilotwings 64 has gone down as one of my all time favourite N64 games. It was fun, challenging and kept me coming back for more for years and still does to this date. When Pilotwings Resort was announced on the 3DS it was one of the main selling points the handheld had for me. So, when I finally picked up my 3DS at DSE for $199 on the day of the price drop, I rushed to order Pilotwings via Ozgameshop. I can't remember being this impatient with a game to arrive in the mail for quite some time.
For the past week my 30 min train ride in the city and home again, has been consumed with this game. I'm currently on the Platinum missions and am enjoying the game. This missions are as fun as the original, the introduction of the fox suit was awesome albeit for a mission or two. The controls are solid and the music really kicks the nostolgia into overdrive.
As fun as the game is and as much as I enjoy it, I can't help but feel that it was rushed and ultimately a missed opportunity. Now I should point out that I don't know what lies beyond finishing the platinum class so forgive me if I miss something and feel free to correct me if the following is incorrect.
Firstly, the game has the one map. This wouldn't have been a problem if it was as big as the USA map on Pilotwings 64 but the truth is that the main resort is slightly larger than than the first map in PW64. Although the missions differ in difficulty and routes around the island, it would have been so much better to have included more maps with a veriety of different environments.
Secondly, I would have loved them to reintroduce some of the characters from the 64 version instead of some boring looking guest Mii characters. When I first fired up the game, I hadn't created my own Mii. After seeing the ones available I figured I'd be better off making my own.
Overall, it's a fun, enjoyable game that I know I'll be getting good use from. I just feel that it had far more potential than what was ultimately delivered. Despite its short comings, it's definately a game I would recommed to 3DS owners. It's certainly my favourite behind Zelda OOT.

Re: Forza 4 (1 year ago)
That's a bloody shame. I was highly anticipating the inevitable Porche 911 Turbo vs Nissan R35 GTR Nurburgring event. I guess it won't be happening. Very happy RUF will be included in the game though. I suppose it's Porche's lose to be included in what will most likely be one of the biggest racing games to be released this generation.
Re: What really ticks you off? (1 year ago)
Ninja Gaiden won't feature dismemberment
Tean Ninja claims that people don't want to see that sort of violence any more. While that may be true, Ninja Gaiden had certain aspects of the gameplay that relied on dismemberment. This included wounded crawling enemies making fights harder unless you finish them off completely, kamikaze enemies etc.
I guess that's what happens when team ninja loses all its bad ass (Itagaki).

160GB PS3 bundle with HDMI cable and two games (choice of Assassins Creed 2, MK vs DC Universe, MX vs ATX Reflex) for $349 available from 22 Aug.
Even though I prefer Xbox and PC to the PS3 in virtually all aspects, there's no better time than now to buy one and play some incredible exclusives like Uncharted, Shadow of the Colossus/ICO, MGS4, Infamous etc.

I know I'm somewhat late to the party but I just got a 3DS from DSE and Zelda OOT. OOT looks fantastic and the 3D works surprisingly well. I also love the thumb pad - much better than the PSP's. I've just ordered SSFIV, Pilotwings Resort and Star Fox from Ozgameshop so I look forward to getting those soon.
Impressed and happy with the device so far. Not blown away but it's still great.

I don't agree with it but it's just the way most western corporations function. The major gaming companies answer and to some degree exist to deliver positive financial results to shareholders.
When I made the comment "Gaming companies have to aim to be profitable in each market, otherwise what's the point of them selling their games here", I was trying to speak from their point of view. Every company sells a product in hopes of reaping in the financial benefits. If a company truely doesn't believe their product won't succeed in a particular market, they won't distribute/sell in said market. Examples include particular models of cars, certain clothing brands etc.
All I trying to point out is that gaming companies owe a duty of care to their shareholders and as such look to maximise earnings even if it means that the RRP in Aus is increased in the process by way of a different pricing strategy in order to make up for the smaller market. I know it's not very fair at our end but we don't make the rules and it's simply how most multinational businesses function.
You're absolutely right in saying that could potentially doom local sales bar the uneducated shopper. I have never agreed with their practices/strategies, simply tried to point out why we pay more than others and why from a business point of view is somewhat justified.
However I'm a true believer that they're are shooting themselves in the foot as the sales they had hoped to get in our market are being diverted to sales in other regions due to the lower prices in EU and the US. It's not going to look good in their financial statements when they see that our market isn't performing as well as they'd hope making our market look unviable. Most western business are all about profits and worse yet they're quick to follow and be sheep but slow to innovate and restructure based the current climate. They need to acknowledge the fact that a significant amount of sales are being lost in certain regions and be proactive about it rather than being reactive. Review pricing strategies, distribution methods to regain that lost business and potentially price games slightly lower. Again, I highly doubt we will ever match the rrp of massive markets like EU and the US but any change is better than none. If it's good enough, people will opt to pay slightly more to have the game here and now rather than wait to have it shipped. But again, most businesses don't think like.
Believe me, I'd love to live in a world where businesses shared a health balance of pleasing consumers and shareholders. But we don't. We live in one where shareholders come first. We live in one where instead of looking at restructuring and revising pricing strategies, the more likely solution is to implement some sort of system to prevent or deter sales from overseas. It's happened before as region protection, dlc region locking etc and to most business, it would be a more viable way to solve the issue while keeping investors and shareholders happy.

I think there is one key thing that most people over look when comparing games (and most consumer products really) in Australia compared to US. Yes shipping, distribution costs etc are a factor but I would say that the most important element when deciding on price comes down on domestic market size.
Markets such as the US and Europe are far larger than Australia. As such, when gaming companies price their games in those large markets, they can afford to price them lower than in smaller markets. This is due to the significantly larger volume of sales compared to a country such Aus. It's cheaper because the pricing strategy is based on high volume sales and lower profit margins. Those markets can sustain that pricing strategy making it viable and a just price. Whereas in Australia, a market with a population of 22 million (the US has about 14x our population), a pricing strategy like that isn't viable.
Gaming companies have to aim to be profitable in each market, otherwise what's the point of them selling their games here. As such, they develop a pricing strategy that reflects Australia's market size, which in our case would be a pricing strategy based on higher profit margins and lower volume of sales. I think RRP in Aus is somewhat justified when you compare those factors. As consumers you always have the choice to purchase online or locally.

The only time I buy at local stores, primarily Game or JB, is when they have sales where you really do get your monies worth when compared to the cheap online alternatives.
A key example is the last family friend night that JB had. I bought NFS Shift 2 LE for about $40. The cost online is about the same if not a few dollars cheap. Game usually have really decent sales such as the trade 2 games, get 1 for a dollar. Big W, DSE and Harvey Norman sometimes have low key sales where they try to off load clearance stock. I recall buy Devil May Cry LE for $10 from HN.
I don't bother going into local retailers except for when sales like that are going on. It's simply not worth it as we all know that the RRP for games are too high and unjustified when compared to sites like Zavvi or Ozgameshop.

Uncharted 2
Why the hell did I wait so long to play/finish this!?
I've had the game since release but just never got around to playing it until last week. Finished it last night and it was easily one of the best gaming experience I've had this generation. The action, puzzles and platforming was all well paced. The cinematics, environment and acting was brilliant. The visuals were amazing throughout the game. Playing through it in Crushing now and will be aiming to get all the trophies like I did in the first one.

Benza, SSF4 AE has challenge mode. At least on the PC version from Steam. I agree with the rest though. They set each revision at a cheaper price point but you essentially miss out on content that should have been carried over to begin with.

Re: Gaming Bargains V2 (1 year ago)
Empire and Napoleon Total War GOTY for $7.49 USD from GamersGate.
Just like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the game has to be redeemed through Steam.
I'm going to buy it as soon as I get home from work as I've always wanted this game.

Re: Street Fighter IV - console release info, etc (1 year ago)
Had some very good matches with Grim, SumAznGuy and Leon.
I really got to shake of the scrubiness particularly jumping too often.
My Chun-Li, Guile and Balrog require some much needed training. My Vega is about the only one that I've remained decent at.

Thanks for the advise guys! I'm looking at building soon with the i7 2600k, mobo, ram, case and SSD HDD + SATA3 HDD and transfer over my 850w PSU, CPU cooler and MSI 460GTX Hawk. I figured those should last me for a while. I'm starting to gain more interest in PC gaming over consoles so I'm hoping to eventually upgrade to an ATI 6990 and one of them awesome Dell monitors Denny and Alex have.
PC Master Race experts assemble!
I need some advise regarding 1155 and 1366 socket motherboards. I'm hoping to upgrade my computer in the not too distant future (hopefully using tax money provided I get a healthy return) and wanted to know if there are any peformance difference between the two and chipsets available for both sockets. I've read the reviews for the i7 2600k and it seems to be the best chipset in terms of value and performance.
Seeing as I want my next PC to a solid PC gaming rig, would a i7 2600k + 1155 socket combo be a better option than an i7 960 + 1366 combo?

I had a few good rounds with Grim and Zero. Rusty as hell though. The trouble is finding time to practice
Re: Forza Motorsport 4 'Sizzle' trailer (1 year ago)
Looks immense! I love the detail that the cars have and the Kinect headtracking looks great. Would really use it for anything else though. Looks like Turn10 is about to turn it up a notch. Are dynamic environments such as rain and night races going to be included?

Can anyone recommend an accountant in Melb? CBD or inner east area?
Accountant's are always the best option when it comes to getting a good tax return. Their fees may seem expensive but ultimately, they help maximise your return.
I get my girlfriend's dad to do mine as he was an ATO tax man for 30+ years. I knew about small things that I could claim under tax without having to worry about an audit but there were several other things he pointed out that could help in getting a greater return.
A few things he told me to consider are;
- Check and keep all donation receipts
- Make use of any elgible tax offsets
- Always include interest earned from any bank accounts. Generally, statements for periods within the end of financial year have a summary of interest accrued.
- You can claim $300 of work related expenses without receipts.
- If you do work from/at home, you can claim things such as electricity etc. Teachers marking assignments at home is a good example.
- For the 2008/2009 - 2010/2011 financial years only, if you received Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY or AUSTUDY, you can claim course fees, text books, computers, internet connection, telephone calls, stationary, basically anything related to self education. NOTE: The GOVT has announced that it will pass a new legislation that will remove these entitlements from 1 July 2011.
- For the 2008/2009 - 2010/2011 financial years only, if you received Newstart Allowance, any expenses that directly relate to you looking for work and the Employment Pathway Plan, can be claimed. These could include, transportation, train course fees, telephone, resume preperation costs etc. NOTE: The GOVT has announced that it will pass a new legislation that will remove these entitlements from 1 July 2011.
- Identify all elgible depreciable work related items. Calculators, computers, equipment to name a few.
- Reduce capital gains on investments. Capital gains on the sale of shares, property and other investments can be reduced by making sure all eligible items are included in the cost base of the assets sold including the purchase price, capital improvements, stamp duty, legal costs, adverting expenses and commission fees, and by applying any available capital losses. You may be able to further reduce any net gain under the general 50 per cent discount where the asset sold has been owned for more than 12 months.

Depends on what time. I'll be at work until about 10pm
