Re: Japanese Language for everybody (4 years ago)
1年ぶり(?)のレスが日本語関係なのは少し恥ずべきことだろうか…
I wonder if I should be slightly embarrassed that my first reply in about a year (?) is Japanese-language-related...
There's a real mess of information here, mostly good but I'm a little concerned that this thread is trying to teach pronunciation as well, which I think is a bad idea.
My advice is to go find a good audio pronunciation guide (online video or something?) to Japanese before you get in trouble. In particular you need to pay attention to the vowel sounds, the length of vowels, the presence of double consonants or the sokuon (っ), the characters つ, ひ, ふ, らりるれろ, combinations like んあ vs な, glides like りゅ vs りゆ, and most importantly the fact that you should not stress and lengthen syllables unnecessarily, like Yokohama etc.
Anyway the point is, go listen to a lot of Japanese being spoken and copy.
I have a few other things to add:

I have a few other things to add:
- the first day of the month is ついたち(一日) not すいたち;
- the spellings of these words: hiragana, romaji (no "n");
- I seriously recommend the "write them out repeatedly" method for hiragana and katakana (but not kanji);
- you should probably follow a structured approach (online guide, textbook, or something) rather than picking up random bits of information from everywhere - and not all online guides are good. freejapaneselessons looks factually correct but by lesson 6 it seems to throw a lot of grammar at you with not much in the way of explanation and could make things quite overwhelming, I think.
- I post a lot at TJP, which I think is an excellent resource for more serious learners, but don't expect to be taught from scratch there (read the rules and other posts first etc etc).

Linux is good if you aren't afraid of problem-solving
Re: Operating Systems (5 years ago)
I dual boot XP and Kubuntu (Gutsy) atm.
Linux is a lot easier to use than it used to be (more stuff accessible from GUIs / done automatically / wider hardware support) but you still inevitably hit problems as you try expanding the amount of stuff you use it for, usually concerning stuff you take for granted on Windows, which will take time and googling to solve, and doing so is usually annoying.
(Most recently for me: Files with Japanese names nonexistent on an ntfs partition unless I manually mount it, even though /etc/fstab is provided the same options as the call to mount; and not finding a media player with full support for styled softsubs. I think Totem might do it; it's GNOME though, so I haven't tried it yet.)
[edit: update: mplayer will do it if you configure it correctly (using options not provided by the application's GUI, of course
)]
On the programming side, tools like grep, find, ssh, cron, mail (for piping program output into) etc. are very useful on Linux, whereas on Windows you have to go separately download programs that resemble them or get cygwin or something.
On that point, I really enjoy using Ubuntu's package managers for programs you do have to get separately. Makes things very fast, and you don't have to search around the packages to find freeware, since it's practically all freeware.
Kubuntu tends to run a fair bit faster than XP for me. But I've used XP a fair bit more in the past and have a lot of programs on it, so I'm not sure it's a fair comparison...?
When I finally get a new PC (or laptop), I'll probably do a similar dual-boot with Vista. I don't really have any major issues with that OS.
(I've used OS X but not often enough to really have a decent opinion of it. I suspect it's likely to stay that way.

Imported and beat this one in Japanese already
It's a great game; takes a while to get used to the dual-screen combat system, but it's awesome when you do
There are tons of badges to get, too (though some are only available if you encounter other people with the game...).
Having seen the main story in its entirety, I don't really like the name change. The original fitted in a really nice way and this doesn't so much, though I suppose it's still relevant in some way. (ooh, cryptic
)
There are some fun personalities in the game even amongst the antagonists, it does have a bit of replay value despite being an RPG, the scan system is amusing (though I didn't read as many as I would have liked... takes me a little while to read them all in Japanese
), and the music's quite "different" but doesn't feel out-of-place. There are a number of fun tracks in there
(Assuming they don't change them...)
Will be interested in hearing impressions of the localized release

I don't see anywhere that says all characters can do a Meteor Smash.
(if you're talking about "If you’ve got it all down, then you’ll be able to smash with anyone.", that means "if you've mastered all the Smash ABC entries, you'll be able to battle against anyone". In any case, "Smash" != "Meteor Smash")

Re: Nintendo, What type of gamer? (5 years ago)
Has played games all his life and owns multiple consoles.
Is subscribed to World of Warcraft.
Plays RPGs.
He's a (hard)core gamer.
A predominance of "casual games" such as Sudoku, web-based Flash, Solitaire, etc, played relatively infrequently, is what makes someone a casual gamer, not them playing Nintendo consoles or genres you don't happen to fancy.
I think the type of gamer you are talking about (PC FPS player who strives to be the best etc) would be called a "competitive hardcore gamer". There isn't really a requirement to play extremely competitively in order to be a "hardcore gamer", IMO.

... how did I never realise that Kat+Ana = Katana
Helirin's pretty interesting too, I love things that change the play area
I had thought that there'd be a ton of Assist Trophies, but I get the feeling we've basically seen all of them now. There's enough of them, anyway.
As for controls, I keep hearing stuff about the Wiimote-only control scheme, but I don't think anyone really thought that one was going to be for pro-players in the first place
More importantly, what about Wiimote+Nunchuk?
Is it usable, and to some extent natural (remapping the controls if need be)? Having both rumble and wireless is important to me, so even if it's not so natural I'm prepared to spend a while getting used to it
Prefer not to use the wired Cube controllers I have...

Oh yeah, about that list.
Would someone mind posting a condensed version which lists only the number of songs per series, for those of us who don't want to look at every song in the game just yet?
Also, where did the titles in that list come from? Are they pulled from the disc or written by fans? (I ask this because if there are officially localized titles for the songs that only appeared on the Japanese version of the Dojo, it raises my hopes for their inclusion in the US/PAL version of Brawl.)

89 pages gone in an instant... did our $poons remain intact?
On topic of level: Aero Dive was one of my favourite tracks in F-Zero GX (I think I still have a pretty good Time Attack record for it...). Really looking forward to playing it.

The disc drive on my Wii already died once for no reason (had to send it in), it better not fall foul of this too
Pretty unlikely though.

Notice concerning the symptoms of the Wii-exclusive software "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" where the disc cannot be read
A sincere thank-you for your continued patronage of Nintendo goods.
We have received enquiries from those customers who bought "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" - which we released on January 31st - concerning symptoms like "the disc cannot be read", "errors occur while the disc is being read", or "videos are not displayed smoothly" on Wii units which can play other games without problems.
Having analyzed the Wii units that were sent to us with these symptoms, we have found that a large number of them had cigarette tar, dust etc. stuck to, among other things, the lens used to read the optical discs.
For "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", we have used a 2-layer disc with a large capacity, but compared to the 1-layer discs that we use for other games, the 2-layer discs are more easily affected by dirt on the lens.
This is a symptom that can be improved by cleaning of the optical-disc-reading lens inside the Wii unit, but since you as our customer do not currently have a method to do that on hand, we will clean it here for you at no charge.
Though it will cause a great amount of trouble for you as a customer who kindly purchased it, we would humbly request that you send the Wii unit and Wii unit proof of purchase along with "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" to the address below.

Re: Pokemon D/P Tournament ROUND 1 (5 years ago)
Agreed with the talk about only Sleep and Freeze being disallowed, Jibbs (though one could argue back against Paralysis: "but it does have a guaranteed cripple - the drop in speed" but to that I say we're only limiting the absolute worst scenario, widespread total immobilization. For the rest, use strategy.)...
but
1. the combination of Sleep+Freeze is allowed by both our rules ("You can sleep one pokemon and freeze another") and the official rules in Stadium 2 (OK, so I haven't seen any other official rules since then
).
2. if it's OK to inflict Freeze as a side effect, the Freeze part of the clause is meaningless, because AFAIK there's no move that freezes 100% of the time - Freeze is always inflicted as a side effect.
Edit: My solution is to completely bar multiple Sleep or Freezes (but not the use of Freeze-causing moves like Ice Beam when Pokémon are frozen), and if they do occur, the opponent is entitled to a rematch at the moment of it happening. If they continue battling they void their right to a rematch.
Edit2: And if it happens a second match in a row the opponent is additionally entitled to force a forfeit on the other player, so this doesn't go on forever

I made Szayelaporro and Ulquiorra Miis and posted them to the Mii Contest Channel recently. Turns out there are a whole ton of Ulquiorras out there already actually

Re: Zack and Wiki (5 years ago)
I beat it a little while ago (I sadly was forced to use a walkthrough at one point
)
Absolutely ingenious and amazing. Kept me thinking the whole way through.
I'm not sure I like its attitude of killing you repeatedly for trying things out... I couldn't stand to waste those Platinum Tickets, and went back to the beginning almost every time
I probably should have bought a whole ton of them and not worried about it. Still, it encourages you to sit and think rather than brute-forcing your way through puzzles, which is probably a good thing
I can't wait to give this to my brother and watch and cackle as he gets stumped on puzzles I now know the solutions for
Also, I think it's a shame that the development artwork scans etc. you can get by sending Maddy(?) out on treasure hunts as you go through the game can't be zoomed in upon as far as I can tell. A lot of them look really detailed and they're a little wasted being locked at the Wii's resolution.

I have absolutely no time to train for this tournament for the next four months
Luckily I've already got a team of 6 that I raised for the last tournament (before I realised it was 3v3
). So I guess I'll just join as I am, and expect to lose horribly through lack of experience with my team.
Edit: ^ about accidental violation of the Status Clause: I think it was a good idea to exclude Paralysis from the clause because lots of moves do inflict that status effect "accidentally". It's a lot harder to accidentally Freeze or Sleep your opponent's Pokémon
...the question still stands though...

The news that you'll be able to transfer snapshots to the Wii Message Board is especially awesome.

I opted not to get it. I really love Pokémon, but I'm just sick of these half-assed attempts at Stadium games. This thing just isn't up to the standard it should be (see: Stadium 2). Many reviews have expanded on this

Re: Official Avatar and Signature thread v3 (5 years ago)
Admeister: I think it looks good empty. Less is more, you don't need to force all the space to be filled
You already have a semitransparent snowflake thing there...
(I'd probably have gone for Hitsugaya's squad flower...)
In any case something subtle is better than something solid
As for the differences in naming... since I feel like elaborating a bit more on what Gtpod has written...
"Hyorinmaru" is (presumably) the spelling of the English (dubbed/manga) version. In other words it's the spelling if you have in your mind an English pronunciation, which is derived from the Japanese but is rarely the same (especially thanks to American accents in dubs) and not always pronounced with the Japanese "r".
"Hyourinmaru" is a modified Hepburn romanization, preserving long vowel sounds, which tells you how to pronounce the name accurately without hurting the ears of nearby Japanese speakers
There's nothing inherently wrong with using your own region's version, it's just that I prefer to go by the original pronunciation, along with all the meaning it carries
Back to the topic, I think I'm going to take the opposite tack and change my avatar away from ´3 a short while after beating it
My sig will be getting a revamp too.
It's staying with Bleach though.

It's a nice sig though

When I bred my male Tortera with earthquake with my female Garchomp why is it the garbites hatched knowing earthquake?
1. it's Gabite
2. the base form is Gible.
Egg moves are one thing, as people already mentioned, but you probably already know about those? It doesn't really answer the question in this case anyway, since Earthquake isn't an egg move for Gible.
The real answer is that Gible can learn Earthquake via TM, and any TM that the child can learn can be inherited from the father. The learnable TMs are basically automatic egg moves.
Since Charmander doesn't learn Earthquake via TM (only Charizard does), you can't use the same trick there.
(In addition, the child's level-up moves can also be inherited, but both parents need to know the move.)

(don't want to derail this thread, but)
Quick reminder: it's perfectly ok to minus a post because you feel the poster's raking in too many $poons and it shouldn't be voted that high
As hilarious as this thread is, you have received a lot of votes...
It's probably also a bad idea to chastise someone for negative voting, it's not good if people get scared of doing it for fear they'll be "negged" themselves.
In short, you probably shouldn't read too much into an individual's votes.
But I have a feeling you were joking anyway
Love your new sig btw
EDIT: Mitch, this wasn't sour grapes... I'm not quite sure what you mean?
This concept of vote-balancing is one that I made sure to check right at the start of this $poon voting system. I wasn't pushing my own ideas forward here or "encouraging" people to vote you down, I was merely explaining why someone might do such a thing, and that it's not a serious issue which you should berate people for (also I had no idea if your post was a joke or not, you and Jibbs are a bit fickle like that
Your humour passes me sometimes
).
There's seriously no ill-will here at all, and I'm surprised you continued the discussion in this thread after my post... we're simply derailing this one :/ My fault, I suppose, I apologize. I think a mod prune of the posts after and including this one (or moving them to $poon changes topic) would be a good idea if we can't get back on topic.

IT will be in 2d, as Team 17 said that they were not planning any more 3d Worms Games.
(plusses await you)
Either way, the game should work pretty well with the Wiimote. Selecting target locations will be pretty fast and there are other actions that map well onto the Wiimote too. I just hope they don't go overboard...
I don't particularly like the 3D games, though, so I'm much more likely to buy it if it is indeed a good 2D entry into the series.

The White Chamber.
a freeware, sci-fi/horror point-and-click adventure game. only been playing it for about an hour and absolutely loving it so far. it has a similar vibe to Event Horizon imo.
i don't really like the character designs, they're a little too anime-like for my liking, but the story is pretty compelling so far.
and, like i said, free.

I really quite liked the game, but I just couldn't make myself click all the way through it again.
I'm playing Gyakuten Saiban 3.
The spelling in that document isn't great; there are several elementary "then"/"than" and "their"/"there" errors
The style is also inconsistent; the caption text for Figures is below the figure when it's an image, but above when it's a table. The font also differs in the two cases.
Also the whole "using Wiki as a reference" thing.
This is a great idea (and the theoretical content and structure of the document is good), but I can't help but think it needs to be a lot more polished, or it carries about as much weight as regular fan emails.
Edit: *tips hat* thank you, Karai
