Depends on your definition of groundbreaking - Infinity Blade looks pretty damn amazing.

That said it's not the graphics that matter, it's the fact that Unreal Engine 3.0 is one of most used middleware engines; quite a few games use it, even those you may not expect (Mass Effect 2, for instance).

Add to the fact that their UDK freely downloadable for everyone, and you see a lot of amazing potential for Indy developers to produce games for the PSN; instead of learning a new programming language and system from scratch, they can just choose to compile it for the NGP. Although Sony isn't the most open system for indy developers, there's a lot more opportunity here then there is for independent development on the 3DS.
I would agree, except the one thing has has impressed me about the 3DS (and to a greater extent, the NGP) is that the line between a console game and a handheld game is blurring. Obviously to a Street Fighter fanatic the 3DS version would be inferior, because they couldn't plug in their $300 Tournament stick, but to the average gamer who plays fighting games with a controller anyway, the difference is negligible in function, and in this next generation of portables, in graphics.

It's an insane price but not for the reason you think it is.
What's the reason then? I've seen a lot of explanations from game publishers regarding 'localization' and 'shipping costs', but the fact is:

The localization costs would only apply to Europe, where they have to translate to a multitude of different languages. The primary language in Australia is English, the same as in the US and Canada; why do we need a localized version with all the European languages?

And when you consider that the games themselves are usually manufactured in China, given the trade deals we have with China that are nowhere near as restrictive as the trade deals China has with the US, shipping should be even cheaper.
$80 IS ridiculous, especially since the US version is retailing for US$40 - which is about AU$38 at the moment.

Anyone who isn't importing a US 3DS console is wasting a lot of their money - $100 on the console itself, and at least $40 per game.
My interest was piqued when you compared the ambience and gameplay to R4, which in my opinion is still the best Ridge Racer to date. Could you perhaps expand on this, and actually preview the game, instead of padding paragraphs with buzzwords?
Games for Windows Live has the Age of Empires III Complete Collection for 10 cents at the moment! If you're like me and have waited this long, there's no reason not to pick it up for that price.
Oblivion (plus all the expansions + DLC) is on sale for $8.50 on Steam at the moment. For PC, obviously.
I think there is more than just piracy affecting sales numbers - yes, piracy is an issue, but not the glaring one.

The system required to run Crysis smoothly is the Gaming PC - a machine which costs at least $1500. Now, i'm aware there are many, many PC gamers out there - but how many that can actually afford to keep upgrading their machine to keep up with the latest games? No wonder PC gamers pirate - they're spending all their cash on their PCs.
This just backs up what Microsoft's plan has been all along - they've never made it a secret that if Blu-ray won the format war, they would release a Blu-ray addon for the 360. Now that Toshiba has sounded the death-knell, I think an announcement is only a matter of time.

As one of the ten people in Australia with the 360 HD-DVD add-on, I don't really mind that the format war is over. I'm looking forward to bargain bins at JB filled with $5 HD-DVDs so I can buy all the movies I didn't want to spend $40 on to add to my collection.
It's good to see internships like this starting up in Australia - they've worked in the US, and are a great way to get a foot in the door.

I'm doing a Bachelor of IT majoring in Games Dev at the moment, but in all honesty, it's just a piece of paper compared to real-world experience.

Hopefully by the time I graduate they'll have programs running like this in Queensland; we've certainly got enough game companies in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast (Pandemic, i'm looking at you).
I managed to get 995 MB out of 997 MB downloaded before Xbox Live went down for maintenance.

That's just plain mean.
If this is anything like the PSP, eventually PS3 games will come out with the firmware on the disc so you can upgrade even if you're offline.

Still, a lot of people who get a PS3 on launch will want to play PS2 games (Resistance and Motorstorm can only last so long), so there is a possibility that this will artificially inflate numbers so Sony can say "We have X million people online already!", even though most of them are only going online to download the last firmware patch so they can play their PS2 games.

Also, I hope (although I haven't read anything about it, so I doubt it) that the emulation they are running for PS2 and eventually PS1 games will support upscaling to high resolution. Even 720p would be nice - playing FF12 in 480i is not the way the game was meant to be played.
Re: The $2m PS3 auction (6 years ago)
Reading through his feedback and what items they sell, they seem to deal in cheap imitation blue-tooth headsets for mobile phones.

Not really a seller i'd trust 2 million with, even if I was one of the rich and famous.
I'm actually a little bit disappointed by this; when they first announced the Beta, Bungie made it sound like an open beta that anyone could download and play. I figured it would include one or two maps, and act as a demo of sorts to keep people excited until the release sometime late next year.

Guess that was too good to be true. I'm definitely trying for a spot though.
According to their November e-mail, it's still on:

Both the $600 pack (with Zelda, Carbon and an extra controller) and the $730 pack (with Open Season, Zelda, Carbon, extra controller and Rayman!) come with a carry case.

Sounds like the best deal anywhere, but i've had mine preordered at my local game store for months.
If you read the automatic update notes, you need to install Supreme Commander to the default directory for the 0.27 -> 0.3 update to work properly.

On fileplanet basic accounts, you have to wait into a queue to download things.

As for me, I searched for other download sites and am now currently downloading the beta off 10 different sites at once, 300kb/s icon_wink.gif

Thank you very much for this link; it works with Download Accelerator, which means I can resume (useful for my dodgy internet connection).
You can sign up for a free account, or use your IGN account if you have one.
Finally got through to the download link, and it asked to install some Fileplanet Download Manager (*shudder*).

Now, when I click the download link, it opens up the program, but doesn't seem to start any file downloading.

Does anyone know what could be wrong?

I'm hoping it's not a Vista compatibility thing icon_sad.gif
Fileplanet icon_sad.gif

I get to the screen where it asks me to enter the code, but when I enter it, it does...nothing =/

That's on Firefox. When I try to go to it using IE7, it just pulls up a "Page cannot load" error icon_sad.gif

I've been waiting for this game for ages; it truly looks like the spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, and that can only be a good thing.
*sigh*

Why must game companies be so evil?

This is obviously a profit-making ploy. The very nature of Xbox Live meant that gamers could get game trailers and demos without having to jump on the net or go buy the latest Xbox Magazine; now people with Silver accounts are being made to wait.

If it's just trailers and game demos, it will be tolerable, but if they do this with Xbox Live Arcade games as well, it might lead to reduced sales and bite them in the ass in the long run.
I'm downloading it now - XBL has just come back up icon_biggrin.gif

Lumines was one of my favourite PSP titles, so I can't wait to play it on my TV. Too bad I don't have HD...

Also, the Skin pack doesn't seem to be available yet.
I'm not sure if this has been advertised yet, but I just went into the Big W near where I live, and they were setting up for a MASSIVE games sale - and I mean massive. Nearly every PS2 or Xbox game was $25 at the most, with the rest $15 - including relatively new releases. I picked up Shadow of the Colossus and Dragon Quest VIII for $25, but there were a heap more - ones that stood out were Black (Xbox and PS2) $25 and Ratchet (PSP) $25. No extremely cheap X360 games, unfortunately, and no DS discounts for some reason (although they were still marking when I bought it, so they might by tomorrow).

If you've been holding out on buying a game because of cash reasons (like me - hooray for being a starving uni student), I suggest you check out a Big W near you ASAP.
