* spoiler warning *
Finally beat RAAM on Hardcore... man that guy's hard. I've been trying to do the sniper/grenade attack on this guy for 4 days or so... so about 100 tries... mmm... got me nowhere. So then I'm like fk this, I'm gonna re-do the whole level again and get the torque bow to see if that helps. So I do the level again, fill up on ammo and try again...
Well guess what.. I killed him first time! With the sniper you have to wait until the kryll fly off him before you can hit him but with the torque bow it doesn't matter, you hit him anytime you get a good shot. Dom also survived a lot longer and was actually useful since every time i hit him with an arrow the Kryll would fly off and Dom's fire would injure him.
My strategy was to hide behind the first barrier and keep shooting with the bow until he got close to the barrier. Once he's close I switched to the lancer popped up and aimed quickly then used blind fire right up until he was going to come behind the barrier. Then I jumped over ran to where the chain gun is making sure to go through all the lights and stopping if kryll were close. Then I went up the slope toward the chaingun and started shooting at his head with the lancer. Once he got close again I ran back to the first barrier and shot him with the torque bow again until I ran out of ammo. Then once he got close I repeated the same strategy as before...
Bang. Dead RAAM.
It seemed sooooo much easier this way than the usual way with the sniper. Now on to insane...

Cassette tape to CD was a huge leap forward in sound clarity.
That's why those two pieces of technology were taken up so eagerly because people could see the 'real' difference that they offered.
There are two main ingredients in judging quality of VHS, DVD and HD-DVD/Blu-Ray: the first is the amount of pixels which get displayed and the second is the codec used to encode the material. If you take a quick look between all three formats:
VHS (PAL) - MPEG-1 - 240x576 - 138,240 pixels
DVD (PAL) - MPEG-2 - 704x576 - 405,504 pixels
HD-DVD/Blu-Ray - VC-1 - 1920x1080 - 2,073,600 pixels
So from pixels alone DVD contains three times as many pixels as VHS and HD-DVD/Blu-Ray contains five times as many pixels compared to DVD.
Add to that the improved codecs used to encode the information and you start to see how big a difference it actually is.
The reason people moved from cassettes (audio and video) to DVD/CD is because of the advantages of using the disc medium. This meant no more rewinding, deterioration of tape, etc. The quality increase was a bonus.
You are right however that Joe Consumer wont be as impressed with the jump between DVD and HD-DVD/Blu-Ray because it seems like the only thing that's better is a glossier picture. The funny thing the players are not even out yet! Come Christmas time though go down to your local electronics store and check out the quality of a good setup. I have no doubt that anyone that sees it will immediately be able to tell the quality difference between it and DVD.
HDTV on the other hand is a totally different beast and the slow uptake of it is primarily the fault of the TV channels that don't display their "Hi-Def" at anywhere near hi-def resolutions (not to mention their _terrible_ codec encoding). The government has also been very lax in implementing their "Digital Action Plan" any many critical articles have been written about them in regards to this.
Time will tell!
Re: Gears of War Review (6 years ago)
The controls are fine once you get used to them. The "A button does everything" style sometimes produced unexpected effects but these get sorted once you get used to it. For example holding up/forward while pressing A sometimes didn't result in ducking for cover whereas A on it's own did. Overall it works great though and I like the controls more than Halo.
What in particular did the reviews not like about the controls?

one thing i remembered, while i was working at the Rally, i noticed most of the international media who were covering the event were using Blu-Ray Cameras (i saw at least a dozen crews using them anyway), so i guess even if Sony lose the home format wars, they've already started establishing themselves with the media, like they did with BETACAM back in the day.

Re: Blu-Ray and HD-DVD battle is "unfair" to gamers (6 years ago)
Very interesting thread and I'll chime in with my 2c worth.
Like people have pointed out the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD wars are irrelevant to 360 v PS3. The only thing that will decide the console war is quality of the games on the system. Not to mention that by the time the PS3 is available all gamers that want fun games and don't care about fancy graphics will have a Wii and all those that want a hi-def experience will have a 360.
Sony is notorious for releasing proprietry formats: Betamax, Minidisc, Memory Stick, ATRAC, Video8/Digital8, SDDS, HiFD, and now Blu-Ray. Unlike Blu-Ray HD-DVD can't really fail because any current DVD plant can produce HD-DVD discs without upgrading their equipment whereas the same is not true for Blu-Ray. It is therefore much cheaper to produce HD-DVD discs than Blu-Ray discs so it is nothing for a studio to release a Blu-Ray movie in HD-DVD as well. An interesting fact I observed when looking at HD-DVD titles that are scheduled for release in Australia is that the very first official HD-DVD release is from Sony BMG! It seems Sony has learned the error of their ways and put a foot in both camps.
Microsoft's strategy I think has been spot on. They gave those who were dying for a next gen system a console last year and for me that was the deal clincher. I've had a hi-def screen for around 1 1/2 years now and have been dying for any type of hi-def content so waiting until next year for the PS3 was not really an option. To add to that they released the HD-DVD player as a $300 au addon and I get hi-def movies as an added bonus. All that before Sony has even released anything outside of Japan!
The thing that will decide the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD war is the price and Sony is pretty much screwed on this front. Shortage of lasers equal a higher initial player price point (and short supply) and all new Blu-ray production facilities mean higher Blu-Ray disc prices (or at least less profit per disc for the studios). All in all it looks like Blu-Ray will end up the same as all of Sony's proprietary formats. Failure.

Nah it's def not louder than the 360. It's pretty quiet when watching a movie and you cant really hear the drive at all over the 360s fans (which are on a very low speed while watching a movie)
Re: Xbox 360 related (6 years ago)

But I think the latest best price is something like $297 from playasia!

I paid $330 all up shipped with UPS. That was through Gamestop.com. But, I've heard that Gamestop is no longer delivering 360 HD-DVD players overseas which sux.
Re: Xbox 360 related (6 years ago)
Even though i have a US 360, the HD-DVD player and all released titles are region-free so they will work just fine on a "PAL" 360.
Even the power supply on the HD-DVD player is just a DC 240V so there is no problem with that.
All the region coding (for standard DVDs) is on the actual Xbox itself. The HD-DVD drive just acts as a normal USB accessory.

Re: Xbox 360 related (6 years ago)
Hey guys,
I received the HD-DVD player for the 360 yesterday and I have to say the quality is unbelievable. Quite often while I was watching King Kong or Batman Begins I'd find myself losing focus on the characters and would start staring at a brick or rock on some corner of the screen and just marveling at the detail!
If you like movies and have a 360 I definitely recommend it. Well worth the money.

If you guys are looking to buy an import try videogamesplus.ca as well. I pre-ordered my copy for $87 aus including postage. I've bought a lot of games from 'em as i have a US 360 and they are quite good.

Well I'm glad imported a US console!
I'm not too sure about a Australian release anytime soon considering we can't buy any type of HD-DVD player or movie at the moment. The rumours are that HD-DVD players _might_ be out by December.

Re: Xbox 360 (7 years ago)
It's been said before but I'll say it again... the 360 is all about Xbox Live. Games that you'd play for 10 hours you'll play for 100+ hours. It's not about which system has got the best graphics or even the best games. To me it's about which system provides the best gaming experience. No matter which way you cut it, the 360 is the only system that will provide HD graphics, surround sound, online play and online content. End of story. Unless Sony pull a competitor to Live out their ass or Nintendo get into HD I can't see a reason to buy one and trust me I DO want to buy them.
