Big Boss Wants YOU! (1 year ago)
Big Boss Wants You!

http://www.konami.jp/kojima_pro/gdc2012/index.html

Looks like another MGS game is on the horizon, with Big Boss as the hero (?) once again.
Just from that pic, the rabid fanboy inside me really, really wants, but the other part of me just wants Konami/Kojima to ā€œlet sleeping dogs lieā€ as it were.

Looking at the pic, the thing that stands out for me is the patch on his arm with the dog emblem. I can’t make out the writing (Sneaking Dogs?), but I’d guess that BB forms yet another military unit, one that is the precursor to FOXHOUND. Or maybe he just holes himself up somewhere and collects and trains an army of dogs. Or both. Hard to tell what goes through Kojima’s mind sometimes icon_razz.gif. Either way, the dog has me really intrigued, tactical espionage action with a dog in tow would be very interesting, kinda like how the Metal Gear Mk II was in MGS4, except in canine form. I’m hoping that when the game does eventuate, that it’s a console release. I want a fully blown, HD, Metal Gear experience, even if the story is a bit on the silly side icon_biggrin.gif. Colour me excited!!
Dark Knight Rises Prologue camrip (will probably get taken down)

I must admit I was sceptical when this was first announced, I truly thought the MGS series should've ended at 4, but that trailer was kinda awesome. Kinda reminds me of Ninja Gaiden, except just a bit more insane icon_biggrin.gif
And Revengeance, word of the year!

I might be in the minority here, but I hope story-wise, it's relatively self-contained. If they try to link it with the other games, I'm afraid they'll create even more plot holes icon_confused.gif And hehe, cocky Raiden, not sure how I feel about that, but it's better than whiny Raiden icon_smile.gif And I'm glad they removed the Solid from the title, Metal Gear Rising seems more appropiate. Logo look cool too icon_y1.gif Can't wait to see more!

Edit: Ehh, that word's censored? How about very confident? icon_razz.gif
Finally finished Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PS3), three months after everyone else :/ Anyways, wow, what a game! Enjoyed it thoroughly.

I’ve never played the original Deus Ex, but I had heard of it (who hasn’t?), and I knew that it’s held in pretty high esteem. Anyways, when it was announced, and I watched the trailers, my interest was piqued to say the least. That awesome E3 CGI trailer had me hooked, and yeah this was the game that I was hyped up about. The art direction looked different to anything I had seen before (black and gold EVERYWHERE!!!), and the whole renaissance and transhumanism themes intrigued me, along with the multi-approach gameplay.

I would describe my play style as a stealthy assassin, probably from all those years playing MGS. The game did feel very MGS-like, and that’s no bad thing. I killed silently and efficiently, avoiding big firefights for the most part. (Though I went out of my way to save Malik!) Enemy AI was serviceable, was a bit random at times though. Despite wanting to run through the game to see what happens next in the story, I found myself exploring every nook and cranny, like I was playing an RPG. The amount of attention to detail in the world was quite staggering, I found it very immersive to say the least. Adam's apartment was a particular 'highlight', especially the first time you walk in. Hacking was strangely addictive, everytime I walked past something that was hackable, I just had to hack it, even if I had found another way to get into the room, or get the rewards from the hack. I found myself reading every e-mail and e-book that I came across. It was quite enjoyable discovering the lore of the Deus Ex world. Everything comes together to make you feel a part of the game world.

The music is rather subdued but it sets the tone perfectly. I love the Icarus theme. The graphics were fine for the most part, though some of the faces on the NPCs were butt-ugly. And seeing the same face on different NPCs… yeah, small world icon_biggrin.gif Socially, I was an arse. I was surprised I won so many of the conversations. I’m pretty sure I chose the most arse-worthy responses icon_biggrin.gif The major characters of the story were very interesting. The social battles with the major characters were a particular highlight. I would've like to see the conversation system expanded even more in the game. And Adam himself? Yeah, he's a badass. The guy who did his voice did a great job. I'm not sure if another DE game is on the cards, but I wouldn't mind spending more time with Adam, I think he's up there as being one of my favourite gaming protaganists. icon_smile.gif

The boss fights, not much to say that hasn’t already been said in reviews and the like. The boss fights aren’t exactly the highlight of the game. Once you figure out how to actually kill the boss, the fights themselves are over so quick that you don’t really garner any satisfaction from defeating them. Another thing that annoyed me is Adam being able to do all these bad-ass takedowns on normal peeps, yet he isn't able to do any melee damage to the bosses (well except that special case with Namir). The takedowns themselves are pretty awesome, it never got old elbow-knifing someone to the face. A first-person perspective of the takedowns would've been cool though.

The first boss fight with Barrett, it took me at least 10 attempts (or maybe I just suck icon_razz.gif) . Going into it, I didn’t know whether to play it as a cover-based shooter or a more run-and-gun FPS a la Quake or something. I kinda just settled for EMP grenades, and running from one end of the room to the other, shooting him while he was still turning around looking for me. I enjoyed the fight with Yelena the most. Namir wasn’t too bad, though I had my chip ā€˜upgraded’, so yeah, it was a bit trippy, but managed to kill him with no augs. That last boss fight was probably the easiest out of the four, funnily enough.

Also would’ve liked if the bosses were more fleshed out so to speak, (though arguably Namir was already fleshed out, icon_razz.gif!). You don’t really find out much about them at all, their characters, personalities or motives, apart from that they are a part of a black ops group and they’ve done some bad things. I mean, Yelena doesn’t speak at all, as far as I recall. I think you find out a bit more about them in the novel, but I would’ve liked to find out more in-game.

I was under the impression that there would be more city hubs. I would’ve liked to explore upper Hengsha at least, see how the upper-class people live. Apparently it was left on the cutting-room floor, makes me wonder how much bigger the game would’ve been if the developers had the time to put everything they wanted in.

The final act and the ending/s were a bit underwhelming tbh. I expected it to ramp up in intensity in the end, but it seemed more dumbed down to me, with everyone turning into zombies and all. It got very MGS at the end, with the ā€˜kill switch’ being activated and the presentation of the endings. I would’ve liked the ending/s to have been a culmination of the decisions I made throughout the game, instead of here, push a button to select your ending. I would’ve also liked to see the consequences of my final choices, like the repercussions of Darrow’s actions, and what actually happens to Adam, Megan, Darrow, Sarif, Pritchard etc…? And more importantly, where’s my DAMN MIRROR?!! By the way, which ending do yous think is the ā€˜canon’ one?

Overall, it was a great game, a few niggles here and there, but well worth my time, and yours icon_wink.gif. I’m looking forward to my next playthrough, might try to get the Foxiest of the Hounds and Pacifist trophies if I’m up to it

And just personally, it was also satisfying beating this game, cause 10 or so years ago , I would’ve not been able to sit through a game like this. The whole notion of FPS/RPG would’ve been alien to me. Think I spent more time exploring, reading, talking and hacking than actual shooting. Think I’ll track down a copy of the original Deus Ex and give that a whirl, I’m very curious now as to how things pan out 25 years after DEHR, and how that ā€œWhat a shameā€ line comes about, which I assume is from the original (I’ve seen that line like in nearly every deus ex video I’ve watched icon_biggrin.gif)

8 Typhoons out of 10. icon_smile.gif
Re: One Questions (1 year ago)
Hi all, I just signed up to a personal account with Paypal, and linked my new debit card to it, and when I checked my transaction history in netbank, there's a pending debit to Paypal for $0.97. I haven't purchased anything yet and I haven't gone through the verification process either, this charge appeared on sign up. I was just wondering what the charge is for. Ta.
That second pic looks like it could be from Deus Ex...
Having only heard of Syndicate in name only, and knowing pretty much nothing about it, I decided to head over to wikipedia to get a brief overview the original games.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syndicate_%28video_game%29

The last comment in the article regarding the remake:

Latest news on Neogaf sadly shows that developer Starbreeze is re-imagining the franchise as a "Visceral FPS", which will no doubt go down as one of the more pointless genre-changes in franchise name-jacking ever.
Heh, gotta love wiki edits.

Edit: And now it's gone. That was quick. icon_surprised.gif
Just finished Dungeon Siege III (PS3)
An enjoyable RPG in the vein of Diablo that has been heavily catered towards console play.

Pros: The story isn’t quite the tale of good vs evil, there’s a bit of ambiguity to it. The decisions you make throughout the course of the story affect what happens at the end, and it was nice to see that my decisions carried some weight. Jeyne Kassynder, the main antagonist of the game, is a great female villain. Story reminded me of Star Wars a bit, or maybe it’s just me, since I compare everything to Star Wars. icon_biggrin.gif

Gameplay is definitely the highlight of the game. It isn’t just ā€œmash Xā€ repeatedly to get through the game, you have 9 abilities to utilize, and they’re all pretty unique and fun to use. The challenge is figuring out which abilities are the most effective in any given situation. Naturally, the boss fights are the most challenging part of the game. I played the game on Hardcore difficulty, and I died a lot during some of the boss fights. I was using Katarina, who is best at one-on-one, and the boss fights I had the most difficulty with were the ones where lesser enemies would continually respawn during the boss fight, often overwhelming the character. Once you figure out the pattern of the boss fight and get in the groove, it becomes much more manageable.

Cons: The game never really shifts gears until the end. The story was ok, but it isn’t the most exciting narrative I’ve come across. Voice acting was a bit hit and miss. Odo (the narrator) and Marten (otherwise known as Kazuhira Miller icon_razz.gif), your Legion buddies, were ok. Lucas Montbarron was suitably British. On the other hand, Katarina tries to be Russian I think, but doesn’t quite pull it off. I was expecting a no-nonsense woman with a steely resolve, but her character doesn’t quite gel with the voice. Reinhart was a bit of a surprise as well. In place of what I thought would be an old, battle-hardened mage was someone more like an eccentric old professor. Sometimes the voice acting descended to levels of parody, but I think that’s part of the charm of the game. It doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Game is linear as hell, and what’s amusing is if you press up on the D-pad, glowing bread crumbs are laid out for you to the next quest marker. Don’t know why that was needed, the world is small enough as it is and you can’t really get lost.

But my biggest grip was with the inventory/equipment system. I don’t know if they ran out of time or couldn’t be arsed or thought a more complex system would be too complicated for the console players, but it seemed really simple and dumbed down. There are no consumable items of any kind, so no healing potions or whatever, which I thought would be a staple of games like this. Consumable items could’ve easily been mapped to the D-pad, since it’s not used for anything useful.

The equipment and weapons system follows the naming conventions of Diablo, so the longer the name, the better your equipment will be, in most cases. I would’ve liked a way to modify the equipment or make your own, since the equipment you get is really luck of the draw. Getting and sifting through loot is part of the experience of games like this, I get that. But I would’ve liked a way to cater the equipment to your character’s strength and the way you play. With 10 odd primary stats, and another 10 or so secondary stats, you can’t really max out the stats you want to without getting decent loot. And some of the stats do seem superfluous. Often, if I was at a save point that had a treasure chest or store nearby, I would quit and reload the game until I received some decent equipment.

This game doesn’t really set out to do anything new, but it was enjoyable way to pass 15-20 hours. I’d say there’s replay value with the 4 different characters, but since you’ll be doing pretty much the same quests again, in the same order, with the same scenery, it’s not something I’m gonna run through again anytime soon. If you can pick this up on the cheap, I think it’d be worth it.

6 phat loots out of 10.
That Dungeon Crawl link is quite the bargain, you only pay $62.90 from an RRP of $999.99. icon_lol.gif
Not so much what has ticked me off, but more like what has give me a bit of a fright icon_shiggyeek.gif.

Went to download something that was hosted on 4share, and this image in the background greeted me.

Now I'm no expert in horror movies but it looks like something from a japanese horror film, like The Ring or something. But anyways, wtf??!!!!
Dunno if it's to deter naughty pirates or something, but god, it nearly worked! Not something I wanna come across at 2 in the morning >.<
Anyone else come across anything like this?
Playing Dungeon Siege III (PS3) at the moment.
Just your run-of-the-mill hack’n’slash, lootin’ RPG. Rather linear, small world, story seems rather uninspired, but I’m having fun with it icon_smile.gif. I’m playing with Katarina, cause I like girls with big guns, on Hardcore difficulty. It seems a bit on the short side, the level cap I think is 30, and I’m on level 15, so probably halfway, and I only started playing this week. The boss fights are the most challenging, and probably the most interesting part of the game. I have had to retry quite a few of them multiple times. But yeah, not much else to say. Just killing time until Deus Ex: Human Revolution is released. icon_wink.gif
Bought Legend of Mana off eBay. Package arrived today, opened it up, and I had received Legend of Legaia instead. *facepalm* Anyone know if that game is any good? Bah, I won’t be keeping it anyhows, now have to write an angry message to the seller and arrange for return postage back to the USA…which will probably cost an arm and a leg /sigh
^
Hmm, that’s interesting, from the reviews of the DLC I’ve read, it seems that the reviewers prefer the Bonfire of The Vanities more than the Battle of Forli sequence, mainly due to it being much more lengthy gameplay wise. I’ve only played the Battle of Forli DLC though, but yeah I agree with you, hearing Caterina swear her mouth off was so worth it, and also having the part where she flashes herself, which I think happened historically as well, was kinda neat and lolworthy. What system did you play it on out of interest?? I’ve read that the BotV DLC has a few audio glitches and other assorted bugs, so was just wondering if you ran into anything like that. I’ve read a few opinions that the speech Ezio makes at the end of that sequence though is all sorts of epic, what did you make of that? But yeah, when I replay AC2 in the future, I’ll download BotV as well, so I can get the complete experience. I was kinda annoyed that they didn’t include it in the main game =/
With all the super-hero movies out and about lately, I decided to catch up on the movies I’ve missed out on over the years, starting with Iron Man 2. Before going into this, I knew that this wasn’t as well received as the first one from trawlings on the internet and from what my friend has told me of it, so I went in with pretty low expectations. But then again, I went into the first Iron Man with no expectations and was quite thrilled. And you know what, I was pleasantly surprised, it wasn’t as terrible as I had imagined it would be. One of the main complaints I had come across was that they put too much emphasis on the Avengers aspect, and yeh sure, it wasn’t really needed, but who cares, Scarlet Johannson, phwoarr! *ahem* but anyway, yeh it wasn’t as good as the first one, but it was still a fun, enjoyable ride. Robert Downey Jr. really carries this film, and I can’t imagine anyone else as Iron Man now. A lot more action packed than the first, and some cool effects to boot. Only real criticisms are that Whiplash should’ve been a bit more fleshed out, he seemed kinda one-dimensional to me. And the way that War Machine came about seemed kinda contrived and forced. Other than that, solid movie.
7/10.

Hermoine, adult actor……*drool* oh what? Right, Harry Potter. LoL

Well Draco does have a role in that new ape movie, though he looks like he’s playing the same character. Replace the monkeys with house elves, and presto, you’ve got the Malfoys repressing the elves in ā€œRise of the Planet of the House Elvesā€ā€¦ā€¦..Wait, this is movie gold!! I’d pay to see that icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah I’m glad David Yates took the reins on the films, he did a fantastic job with the last few films, and I think he was the only director out of the 4 who had a vision for the series as a whole (probably helped that the last book came out during his tenure, but anyway). To put out a half-decent book adaptation is hard enough, but to churn out 8 movies that are enjoyable, and that respect the source material and keep the spirit of the series, is quite the feat, and kudos to Warner Bros. for bringing the magic to our screens icon_biggrin.gif

I’m a bit of a fanboy as well, and I loved almost all of the movies, each was special in their own way. Sure they had their flaws with respect the books and such, but half the fun I reckon is picking apart the movies and see how well they did compared to the book.

EXCEPT Goblet of Fire. God, what the hell happened there? Urrgh, I think I can rant on for pages about what was wrong with GoF. Anyway, back to the Deathly Hallows.

>>>SPOILERS<<< wrote
Fenrir was the one biting Lavender, and then Hermoine blasted him over the wall, never to be seen again. Think that was pretty much what happened in the book as well, it’s been a while since I read it too. Kinda wished it was a Bill vs Fenrir showdown instead, that would’ve been much more suitable, considering their history. And Fenrir the one to kill Lupin. That would’ve been neat, and epic.
I didn’t want it to end too; I wanted the movie to go on for like another half hour, though I think we were spoiled with a 4 1/2 hour movie in the first place. I think a lot of people around the world are having Potter withdrawal symptoms, me included icon_sad.gif Having grown up with the Harry Potter series, it has definitely had a positive influence on my life. I like to think of it as the LOTR of our generation. icon_smile.gif I don’t think I will encounter anything even close to the scope of the HP series ever again, or in my lifetime anyway, but the memories will remain with me forever. To the Boy Who Lived!!! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif
Was waiting to be served at GAME, when some random kid walked up to me and asked me where the PSP games were. Said I don’t work here but I pointed to where the games were anyway and off he went. Kid must’ve been 8 or 9, but yeh, it made me smile icon_smile.gif
Got 100.0% synch on Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

Great game, probably the best one in the series gameplay wise (thus far). So much stuff to do, it was almost overwhelming at times, looking at the map and seeing all them icons everywhere. Execution streaks were murderous fun icon_biggrin.gif Story-wise though, I felt it was a bit ā€˜lite’. The game felt like a bunch of missions linked together with a very light story. The story wasn’t bad per se, just that I thought there’d be a bit more to it.

>>>SPOILERS<<< wrote

With the rich cast of supporting characters that were introduced in AC2, I was expecting their roles to expand in AC:B, but that wasn’t really the case. Machiavelli, for example, who was introduced rather late in AC:2, I was expecting to learn more about him in the game, since he is such a rich and interesting character of history, but he was really just a sideline to the main act, Ezio. I kinda wished that he was the traitor, just to mix things up a bit. Having some random thief be the leak was just kinda meh to me.

Leonardo I also thought would have had a more substantial role. He kinda just pops up, sells some things to Ezio, and their only real interaction happens towards the end of the game, and even then I’m not sure much happened there. (Note: I haven’t played the Da Vinci DLC yet), but anyway, Leonardo should’ve been a main part of the story, I missed the bromance thing they had going icon_wink.gif The war machine missions should’ve been integrated into the main storyline IMO.

Was it just me, or was this game toned down compared to its predecessor? Just reading the wiki of Rodrigo Borgia, he seemed to have died quite a brutal death, and I was very much looking forward to how AC:B would portray his death, but it seemed rather soft by comparison. I was looking forward to more swearz from Caterina and Bartolomeo, and even they seemed toned down. There were less lols too ("It's a-me, Mario!" that was classic icon_razz.gif)

The twist at the end I didn’t see coming, it raised a few interesting questions for me.
Who/where is ā€˜Eve’? How is Subject 16 connected to all this, and is he still alive, in a physical sense? Did Lucy play a part in his apparent ā€˜suicide’? Where does Lucy’s allegiance truly lie? I’d like to see, some of these at least, ā€˜revealed’ in Revelations.

I’m basically just nitpicking there, but overall, it was a solid, enjoyable game. I think I logged over 40 hours just doing everything you could possibly do, so I think I got value for money. I’m just hoping though, for a deeper and more engaging story in Revelations.

Overall, I’d give this 8 out of 10 Pieces of Eden.
Yay for Harry Pothead!

Seen the film twice now, here are my thoughts on it. I might waffle on a bit, only because HP is awesome icon_biggrin.gif

Visually, it was quite spectacular, the effects were stunning and very well done. Pacing was perfect, I never felt that the film was dragging on. Daniel, Rupert and Emma have developed very well as actors and brought the characters to life exceptionally well.

>>>SPOILERS<<< wrote

My favourite parts were:

The Prince's Tale (Snape's memories): This is one instance where the film adds something that wasn't in the book and is better for it. Having Snape mention that Harry has his mother's eyes, and Snape discovering the bodies of Harry's parents added to an already powerful scene, and this part, much like the book, was the favourite part of the movie for me. It was nice to see Alan Rickman finally explore all facets of his character, as I feel he was rather under utilised in the previous films. A heart-wrenching scene.

King's Cross: Simple, but well done. Made a nice change from the chaos at Hogwarts. Good to see that Gambon has embraced the Dumbledore character from the books, rather than that brash and overbearing man he was in the earlier films (looking at you Goblet of Fire). I got a Gandalf vibe from Dumbledore, not that that is a bad thing. Voldemort's fetus thingy was suitably hideous.

Gringotts was cool, that duplicating effect was well done(forgot what it was called). And the whole Battle of Hogwarts overall was epic and brutal, though I wouldn't have minded seeing more dueling between wizards.

Criticisms (or more like nitpicks)
I did have a problem with the death scenes, or more the lack of them. Not enough screen time was devoted to the other supporting characters IMO. I would've liked the film to show things that weren't necessarily covered, or covered only briefly, in the book, like the actual deaths of characters like Fred, Lupin and Tonks, as this would've had a greater impact than just simply showing their bodies. Hell, Lavender Brown got a death scene, and she was a minor character in the scheme of things. I know the film is all about Harry, but his friends also played a part in defeating Voldemort, and this should've been shown in the film.

Probably my biggest gripe, which was a problem originating from part 1, what the hell happened to Wormtail? He just kinda fell over...and disappeared. I thought they might've had extended his role to part 2, as I'm sure I saw him in the forest in one of the initial trailers, but alas. The way he died in the book was quite the twist, and it is a shame that we didn't get to see it.

Things I would've changed:
I know that it is inevitable that things are cut in the transition from book to film, but I wouldn't have minded seeing Grawp and Kreacher at the final battle, just for continuity's sake. And the spiders, I thought they were on Hogwarts' side?
I would've liked Harry's final speech to Voldemort to have remained in the movie. It showed how far Harry had come, and exemplified his best qualities as a person.
Since there was no funeral scene for Dumbledore in HBP, I would've liked to see Harry return the Elder Wand to Dumbledore's tomb, just so that Harry (and the audience) could finally make his peace and get some closure.
I didn't really like Harry breaking the wand and throwing it away, I thought the Elder Wand would be unbreakable :S
OVerall, this film was epic and overwhelming and I'm sad to see it end icon_sad.gif A truly spectacular send-off for the bespectacled wizard. Probably my favourite film in the series (together with Part 1), and I think I will be seeing it a few more times icon_biggrin.gif
I'd give this film 9 chocolate frogs out of 10.
Matt and Tom being eliminated from The Amazing Race. Bah, really wanted them to win. Ah well, go the girls I guess.
Went to the Rise Against gig in Melbourne the other night, so I've been listening to them lately. I haven't really been
keeping up to date with them though, last album I purchased was "The Sufferer & The Witness", so I've been listening
to their two latest albums, "Appeal To Reason" & "Endgame". Like how Rise Against express their beliefs through their music,
their lyrics are at the very least thought-provoking and sometimes topical. Makes a change from the shallow and vapid stuff
on radio icon_confused.gif

The gig was great, great atmosphere and the crowd were really into it. Kinda wished I was on the floor though,
looked like it was a lot of fun, though my feeble body might not have survived it icon_biggrin.gif

Funny thing happened during the gig though, some random managed to get up on stage when Sick Of It All was
playing, and was dancing and singing along with the band with not a care in the world. The singer
even let him sing along with him, which was nice. Managed to stay on stage for almost an entire song before he went off.
Looked like security kicked him out afterwards unfortunately icon_sad.gif
Re: The Welcome Thread (1 year ago)
Hi all, I've been lurking for awhile now, but I've finally decided to bite the bullet and join this fine establishment icon_biggrin.gif

I got introduced to this site through the gaming bargains feature, which is a fine feature at that (kudos to whoever updates it) and I'm sure it has saved me a lot of money through the years (or made me completely broke, I'm not sure icon_razz.gif) I also like keeping up with the latest gaming news and reviews that this site provides.

Anyways, I look forward to posting here icon_smile.gif
