It's funny because i just saw this article yesterday on Gamasutra that relates to this awesome initiative.
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/40199/DICE_2012_Is_the_publishing_model_broken.php
I'm pledging for this and i hope its a success because i would love nothing better than to see stupid publishers lose for once, just like we lose when they exert thier influence on game development.
Thanks Jarrod! and well done Double Fine!!!!! (i love Iron Brigade)

@Pagan's Mind
lol, So for starters you're saying the facts presented by Spoony in the FF X-2 review which show the inconsistencies FF X-2 has with FF X are fabricated or meaningless?
That the in-game content he shows is fake?
Spoony highlights the ridiculous behind the vision of FF X-2, the pandering to jpop appeal and obvious fanservice used in the game to make up for a poorly thought out and researched game which shares characters and the world from FF X but chooses to take creative licence with most of the games lore? (XIII-2 was also guilty of conflicting with the lore of XIII as well)
FF X-2 was insulting to any Squaresoft FF fan for using the Final Fantasy name in that way, and i get that people dont care about that as long as you get to see ass shots, skimpy outfits and sexual innuendos between cousins and other characters, vapid conversations and goals and........do i really need to continue?
Comedy has been and will always be a medium of introducing unpopular yet factual information to the wider community without getting yourself lynched (most of the time) and certainly has every place in the review of games if they are accurate.
I dont agree with everything that Spoony says, but if something is right, all the wishing in the world wont make it wrong.

I think Spoony sums FF X-2 up best in his 2 part video review. His logic is pretty hard to dismiss
but im sure many will be glad to :)

Re: Games Everybody Else Loves But You Don't (1 year ago)
I find it interesting that after Jarrod mentioned Dead Space that Benza mentioned Bioshock. The reason is that when playing Dead Space (which i loved) i couldnt help but feel that it was taking heaps of ideas from System Shock 2 and making it a 3rd person shooter.
Oh and Benza, you mentioned the Vita chambers making the game easy and breaking the atmosphere. Well in Bioshock Infinite there is a 1999 mode (system shock 2 inspired) where using the "vita chambers" is very costly and the general difficulty is ramped up alot! Ammo is scarcer, enemies are stronger and saving the game often is a must. Also skills cannot be swapped. You cant go to a gene terminal and change your selection, once you decide something its locked in just like System Shock 2. So that announcement got me excited because i agree with you that coming back with half health is no challenge, but having to pay for reviving adds tension back to the mix.
And i agree completely with you Jarrod, i think that Dead Space 2 though an ok game was nothing compared to the 1st one. Isaac was too OP'd, the architecture was boxy and repetitive, and the story was balls. I especially liked when he came out of the vent into the room and mystically had a syringe in his hand which was going for his eyeball, (i was wondering ... where the heck did that come from???)
And the dead girlfriend? I didnt find her glowing scream scary at all, i just wanted to mute that character because its attempt to frighten me "the same way everytime" was an insult to every gamers intelligence. At least the 1st game mixed up those types of scenes so that they were not guilty of reusing scares that got old after the second time.
There were just no scares in the game at all....oh and another thing! If you left an item on the ground, it dissapeared if you left the room!!!! In the 1st game you could drop things you didnt have room in your backpack on the floor somewhere, then go back to the store - dump some stuff and go back for them. Not in the second game! and that just peed me off so much!
Anyway, rant over

Re: FFXIII-2 (1 year ago)
Hi guys
A few of you were concerned that i might be stirring up trouble with my previous post. To be fair i certainly do have a bias in my view of the game, but likewise i would say that many who sing its praises have a bias too if you're being honest.
I certainly am not trying to start childish arguments that we have all seen plenty of on other sites that have reviewed this game and metacritic certainly tells a story of conflicting views that most of the previous FF's didnt suffer from.
And i am eagerly awaiting the review from this site as well.
And to be clear i have played all the FF's up to this game and i love the "franchise" (god i hate that term, it makes a game series sound like a chain of McDonalds restaurants sacrificing quality and substance to grab profits as opposed to delivering a product with integrity and polish) And i always want whats best for the series.
I posted the link to that review because though the author announced from the beginning that he didnt like FF13 and by association probably would not like XIII-2 he seemed very straightforward and fair with his breakdown of the game and i know that it can usually take a fair way into a game to be able to gain a "big picture" view of it when the excitement and adrenaline of something "new" wears off and the reality of what the game has really offered comes to light. Hence why i asked those of you who had played the game that question because i believe that the guys and girls on PALGN are some of the clueiest (is that a word?) and sensible people around.
And like emech said, though most of this thread is populated by fans of FFXIII-2, i was hoping for some pros and cons to be discussed to see how this game has fared?

Re: Mass Effect 3 (1 year ago)
How about the "revised" edition be written by Drew Karpyshyn, you know the guy who created the Mass Effect story to begin with!!! I do not for the life of me understand the motivation behind not giving the author of the 1st 3 mass effect stories, the lead writer of the original Mass Effect game, a lead writer of Mass Effect 2 (should have been the lead writer IMO) And now isnt even a lead writer????? God i HATE how this happens.
I LOVED the 3 novels and the story in the 1st game. Except for the ending and the character arc stories i could not stand the rest of the games writing in ME2. I hope the writing is at least half as good as Drews work on this 3rd installment. Oh and any Mass Effect novel not written by Drew can suck my cock.

Re: PALGN on Pastebin (1 year ago)
I know its bad but it was just prolonged torture before. Now something has to happen and people can move on. Any reasonable person (you know someone with a brain) knows that the concerns raised by the parties involved were legitimate and had thier audience's best interests at heart as well as the integrity of the site.
Look at it this way, WH&s checks occur for a reason, if there are legitimate hazards found, and are reported, its the fault of the manager if after they are informed do noting to rectify it. Not the fault of the officer performing the checks or the staff for highlighting them. Its incompetent managing and like i said any person with a brain can see that.

Re: PALGN on Pastebin (1 year ago)
Wow, that was a really long read on Pastebin and if true confirms everything i thought was going on.
What cost is involved with starting up another site? (im completely clueless) It seems that that is really the only solution if the situation stays as it is.
I would in a heartbeat move over to that site if it was created. And im sure all the readers and contributors would do the same. Its just a damn shame that things have turned out this way. It seems like admins are between a rock and a hard place. Its not fair to say the very least.

@ Pagan's Mind
Really? You thought that 88% for Nier was a fair score?
And 63% for Trinity universe was extremely forgiving for a game that appears to have been designed for a dreamcast era console. I would think 50% would be more accurate.
So im with Vervain here, and to be clear i know you are a huge RPG fan, so am i, i own well over 300 games (i know thats not alot for some people) and most of them are RPG's, so im a huge fan myself of the genre, but being a true fan is being able to sift out the real gems and not reward companies that deliver sub-par games.

Re: FFXIII-2 (1 year ago)
Just think, it used to be fairly rare to see a Final Fantasy in the 80% bracket, let alone the 70% ratings bracket (gamespot). The main series used to be in the 90% bracket fairly consistently.
Re: FFXIII-2 (1 year ago)
IGN released thier review today.
Final Fantasy XIII received an 8.9 from IGN
Final Fantasy XIII-2 only received an 8 from them. (much to the outcry from fans thinking that this game was going to at least get a 9.5)
They said even though its better than XIII mechanically, the story was god awful and even worse than XIII. Also they essentially confirmed the japanese reviewers that said the game doesnt finish with a conclusion, but rather leaves the player very dissapointed by its lack of an ending.
So the game is full price, but its unfinished and to give it more depth you are required to buy all the DLC, which sounds to be considerable and even then you will need to buy Final Fantasy XIII-3 to get a conclusion.
do the fans of the Square-Enix versions of FF still think that the Final Fantasy name is being given the honor it deserves? Or are SE revealing that like every other money grubbing company out there are just milking the name for all its worth and destroying a series that once delivered a quality experience? Cant wait to find out what the concensus in the western world is after a month.(doesnt take long to finish the game) We know what the Japanese thought of the game.

Re: Boom Street Review (1 year ago)
Got any non Nintendo reviews coming up soon?? Im not hating on Nintendo but would like to hear from some other platforms too.
Re: Resident Evil 6 (1 year ago)
Its still early days, and there wasnt that much in the way of gameplay. Fair amount of cinematics though.
Really liked seeing the darker look of the game instead of daytime in 5 which just seemed to defeat the atmosphere somewhat.
Love the fact that Leon is back with Chris in the same game. Though i hope there are unlockable missions like were in RE4 with Ada Wong. And of course Mercenaries mode, but in a city!!!!
This might go either way by the time it comes out, but im pretty excited by what ive seen. I just hope it is more challenging than 5. That was way too easy, especially with unlimited ammo.

Re: FFXIII-2 (1 year ago)
How about "token marketable girly boy / Kingdom Hearts costume (disney tie-in) character?" suit you?
Just being devils advocate about it, just wanted to see if anyone else was thinking the same thing when they saw it.
I would have thought that if some random guy from the future was going to help a young woman through some pretty serious time travel journeys to right wrongs etc, someone like Auron from FF10 or an older woman may have lent some maturity to the decisions being made is all.
But if thi is anything like FF10-2 than following any kind of logic is going to go out the window with this one.

Because the developers i want to support are also bringing out games on platforms i didnt own, so i buy the platform just for them.
Problem solved
Re: Amy (1 year ago)
The game looked exciting, until i played it. Its HORRIBLE!
Re: FFXIII-2 (1 year ago)
If anyone recognizes my name than you know i hate Square-Enix and want it to die a painful and satisfying demise. I hated FF13 with similar good reason.
But to be fair i downloaded the demo and completed it fully. I did the sidequests, i completely raised several of the monsters to the max and i captured all monsters i encountered. (in fact im sure i had them all)
I agree with all the negatives already mentioned but felt the need to point a few out.
The Chocobo sales lady in red had me thinking of the Claptraps in Borderlands and how i wanted to shoot everyone of them when they said "Look at me im dancing im dancing!" Likewise she needed a bullet to the brainpan or at least a gag. I would have preferred an electronic vendor otherwise her prescence at every location means that she is there for your party's benefit only and serves no other purpose to the worlds inhabitants.
Plus if she is a timetraveller as well, why did her presence at the site not awaken the 1st boss which was obviously being studied for seemingly a long period of time by the locals but as soon as our intrepid heroes which i respectfully call "cheerleader 1" and "token justin bieber/disney chracter" appear through the time device this motionless monstrosity instantly comes to life gunning for them....(wait a minute, of course! its because they are the lead characters!! - silly me i get it now, they are more important than everyone else.) I certainly hope that is explained.......wait a minute, what do i care i wont be buying this game. All i can say is i cant WAIT for the review

Re: The Last Story Limited Edition announced (1 year ago)
Hey i agree, i only bought a Wii for Xenoblade Chronicles.(in fact i bought the game before i bought a Wii) I would love for it to be on 360 or PS3. I will always buy a quality game to reward the creators regardless of platform. I mean i WANT them to have the money to make more. Its a no brainer.
Re: The Last Story Limited Edition announced (1 year ago)
Cannot wait to get this game, looking forward to another game by Mistwalker studios. (Sakaguchi and Uematsu the artists responsible for the real Final Fantasy games)
Re: Mass Effect 3 (1 year ago)
You see i agree with Jarrod here. I hate seeing dlc come out say 1 month after the game comes out. You pay $100 for the game already and then 400 to 600 MPS later you see a cool dlc with the size of 108.00KB showing up......they sell you a disc WITH the content but you have to pay MORE to use the content when you already have the data!!??
I have no problem paying for 120MB of new content because i equate that to made "AFTER" the game was released.
Just a pet peeve.

I'm not surprised, I'm sure that SE thought back to FFX-2 and how well it sold and planned accordingly
No the low sales are because there was an enormous level of dissapointment in Japan from the poor quality of the previous game FF XIII
...Excerpt from PC World article...
Final Fantasy XIII-2 Breaks Half a Million Sales in Japan
"What negative public perception, you ask? For months the game was dogged by fans posting concerns on Internet message boards that the game would undersell. While plenty of fans turned out for the launch event at a Bic Camera store in Yurakucho, many shops reported no lines at all for the game. However, this could be due in part to the Sony PlayStation Vita launch the next day.
What was more shocking is that by Friday of last week, Amazon.co.jp slashed the price of Final Fantasy XII-2 on PS3 and Xbox 360 from the MSRP of 7980 yen ($102 USD) to 5420 yen ($69 USD). By Saturday most retail chains had also lowered their price. While this behavior isn't uncommon in North America, it is almost always signals that a game is failing in Japan. Often there is no return policy for Japanese vendors, so if a game doesn’t sell the store is stuck with the game until they lower the price enough to get rid of the excess stock.
Final Fantasy XIII received heavy criticism in both Japan and North America for its linearity, lack of towns, and paucity of interesting sidequests. While the battle system was praised, it wasn’t fully unlocked until a dozen hours into the game, which was too long for most players. The game was also supposed to be released along side Final Fantasy Versus XIII (unreleased and still in development since 2006) and Final Fantasy Agito XIII (rebranded as Final Fantasy Type-0 and released to high sales on the PSP in Japan with a North American release in the works.)
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is a strong response to those criticisms. It's a much more open game with a heavy emphasis on time travel element tons of sidequests, and it's already received a perfect score from both Famitsu and Dengeki magazines (though both magazines gave its predecessor similarly high marks). Famitsu gave it a 39/40, and Dengeki claimed giving the game a numerical score would do it a disservice, such was its greatness. It should be noted that publisher Square-Enix paid for tons of ads in both magazines leading up to the game's release.
In contrast, the user reviews at Japanese website PlayStation MK2 currently average out to about a C grade; common complaints include high encounter rates and the game only having two party members. Of course, the fact that the “third” party member is a monster somewhat negates this. Based on early player reports, the mini-games and late-game story also appear to be uninteresting, but perhaps the most surprising news we're hearing is that the story takes between 13 to 20 hours to complete."
........
Looking at the low sales then followed up by the user ratings on MK2 of representatives from the 500,000 people who did buy it, plus the obviously "sold out" review scores from the two magazines who were essentially bought off by SE, it looks pretty damning
I look forward to PALGN's review.

Final Fantasy VIII sold 2.5 million copies in 1st 4 days
Final Fantasy IX sold 2 million copies
Final Fantasy X sold 1.9 million copies in 1st week
Final fantasy XII sold 1.7 million copies in its first week
Final Fantasy XIII sold 1.5 million copies in 1st week
Final Fantasy XIII-2 sold 500,000 in 1st week!!!
Wow what a success! BTW notice the sales go down around FFX? oh yeah who took over from Square/Soft at that time?

Man Benza, you sound like you used to date a girl who just absolutely loved MGS games, but then she dumped you and now you hold the games responsible for your broken heart.
Your arguments that its "cheesy" dont seem to be telling the full story....
So let me get this straight, cheesy that hits you with blunt force trauma (Bayonetta) is ok, but moments of subtle to Kojima-esk "cheesy" (your definition not mine) give you goose pimples?
You seem to hate MGS as much as i hate Square Enix.

Fantastically different from Kojima's serious, portentous style.
All of Kojimas games were awesome, sure 4 was full of cinematics, but when you understand that Kojima wanted to originaly make movies it makes perfect sense.
So sure this game should be fun, and seeing another game from the guys that made Vanquish and Bayonetta is great, but please dont diss Kojima. If it wasnt for him, this game wouldnt have seen the light of day.
