Re: The Screenshots Thread (1 year ago)
My insomnia has been catching up to me and I've been up all night, so as usual I of course did something extremely productive! So here's a glimpse into a Pixie-like world.... a recreation of my house in The Sims 3! (interior not finished)
Here's the real thing (yes I just screencaptured google maps)
I don't think I'm on the path to being an architect but I'm pleased with it for an hours work

Maybe I could get a job taking screenshots for gaming companies to use for advertising their games
hmmm

Re: Which was the last game you finished? (1 year ago)
Replayed on PC!!
First of all, I don't know why I said the comic relief character (Barry) died because he actually never does
I think my dreams may have become reality which makes sense in the context of this game actually
But I didn't find him annoying at all this time around, I'm not even sure why I was so bothered by him the first time, I've endured much much worse characters in games.
Visuals are much better on the PC, although I can't give specifics it definitely is more stunning when you play this version on high. Of course higher resolutions and anti-aliasing help. A few bugs related to Ge-force series 400 and 500 cards which cause flickering trees and flora. The controls felt more fluid with the wonders of the mouse <3
Everything else I said before I stand by. Knockback attacks still annoy me (in any game really) its really irritating when I get crowded and before I can light a flare I get hit by an enemy, causing Alan to do his animation which cant be interrupted, then I'm hit by another enemy, then another, and I'm basically being juggled back and forth unable to react until I die. That has nothing to do with my abilities except perhaps avoiding getting hit the first time, its the game making me fail and that is never a good feeling for a game to give you.
The PC version comes with both DLC addons. I played them through. Wasn't a big fan. Both episodes are set in Alan's mind and although at times I really liked all the dreamy segments because they gave me happy memories of Max Payne (in fact numerous things in this game reference or will remind people of Max Payne), it got a bit long in the tooth when its drawn out over two episodes. The last DLC episode pulls the tired old trick of "here are several characters you've met throughout the course of the game so far, you will now fight them one by one." Also, neither DLC episodes did anything at all to further my understanding of the story, they only served to make it even more bewildering. The story is more confusing than every Resident Evil game put in a blender.
I remain firmly on 3 sprinkles

Re: Games Everybody Else Loves But You Don't (1 year ago)
How about common gaming trends that people hate?
The biggest one for me is boss fights. Most people seem to like them, see them as a reward and challenge to overcome at the end of a level. I see them as annoying little immersion breakers that I have to force myself through to enjoy the rest of the game. Often when a game ends with a boss fight, I'll actually just quit right there and watch the ending on YouTube.
There are exceptions. I like it when you don't directly fight the boss but fight a bunch of other normal enemies while indirectly harming the boss somehow, or separately harming him every few minutes (a recent example is that crane boss fight a few levels into The Darkness 2) and I also like it when the idea is a big fight with normal enemies to finally reach the boss and then the boss is still killed in a believable way (such as the ending of Half-Life 2)
Basically any other method I hate though. They are all repetitive and annoying. The absolute worst kind for me is when you're just essentially fighting a normal person who somehow has inhuman amounts of health for no reason. I don't find it very fun to shoot someone hundreds of times before they finally collapse, when their only protection is a T-Shirt.

Re: The OSCARS of the internet! (1 year ago)
Sorry Karai, I just thought it would be better I come out and say that so someone else gets an opportunity to enjoy the prize
Re: The OSCARS of the internet! (1 year ago)
Woow I can't believe I won that
The prize is
1x code to redeem Star Wars: The Old Republic 'digital deluxe game download'
1x code to redeem 60 days pre-paid game time (for SWTOR)
However, as grateful as I am I would like to respectfully hand my prize over to someone else as I don't enjoy MMOs much myself and I think it could be much better used by someone else
Any more names in that hat Karai?

Re: The Screenshots Thread (1 year ago)
Oh Mike I don't know how it will play with motionjoy... but I didn't notice your other question on the last page: Driving works fine on PC, probably a little better with a controller but that's the case with all driving segments in games.
Re: Sleeping Dogs (formally True Crime: Hong Kong) (1 year ago)
Wow this actually looks good, its like stranglehold in an open world with martial arts. Fun
Re: The OSCARS of the internet! (1 year ago)
I only just realized I had won 3 awards
Thanks so much everyone who voted for me. I'm especially pleased for the Freelance award as I really didn't know people liked reading my little mini-reviews so much.
I'm also really happy the Screenshots thread has become so popular. As for sexiest woman, I still disagree, and as for tying with Charley well she is a sure winner in that regard, but I'm still extremely flattered so thanks again for that too! lol I think its 3 years in a row now?
I think 2011 was the year I really made a kind of mark on the community in some way
Hopefully that can continue with a new forum whatever it may be.
Its really sad to see this place steering towards an ending... Its actually the only place I regularly go on the internet and the only internet community I belong to. Being a kind of non-nerd (aside from gaming itself) I don't really hang around in gamer circles in real life and I don't really have anyone to talk to about gaming so it was really great I could find some place to be able to express this interest of mine which other people can understand and relate to.
I also like to think I've grown since joining here, looking back at my old posts I cringe even though its only been a few years I've totally matured as a person at least in the way I've learned to express myself on the internet, perhaps not so much in real life. But PALGN definitely played a part in that.
I love you all ;DD group hug.

I don't remember that you could, you just look use it without pressing the aim button which doesn't waste battery, although my memory isnt very good so maybe im wrong.
Re: The Screenshots Thread (1 year ago)
Go for it Goober, I also played the 360 version first and I'm glad I got it for PC too. Good port, good price, and the DLC that I didn't bother with on the consoles. The only thing I've noticed is a weird visual bug where tree branches sort of "flicker." Apparently its a Geforce series 400 & 500 issue. But it feels and looks like it was made for PC.
Re: The Screenshots Thread (1 year ago)
More Alan Wake

Great port! Plays very well and looks better than the console version. Maxed with 4xAA on my 560Ti

Re: Which was the last game you finished? (1 year ago)
Yeah I don't know if I could say its worth it either, the original mod for Half-Life 2 is free though so you can try that out first maybe. Or wait for a steam sale

Dear Esther (PC)
Well it's not really a "game" as such, its a short narrative in which you just kind of... walk. Take in the scenery and explore and figure out whats going on. It was very interesting and unique, it has really great writing and narration, also for a source engine game the attention to detail is amazing. It only takes about one hour to finish though (and I was trying to take my time). Still it was a very beautiful experience in every way and its something that will stick in my mind for a while.

Re: Funny Links (1 year ago)
I was watching a Dara Ó Briain stand up yesterday and there was a good bit about videogames I thought y'all might appreciate :]
Re: Funny Links (1 year ago)
The Toy Story and BTTF ones always bothered me lol
Re: Mass Effect 3 (1 year ago)
I've paid my dues by buying ME1 & 2 and every single snippet of DLC including the crappy useless stuff.
Just kidding
Maybe I'll get it for the 360 and use the pirated PC version just so they are still getting my money. I want to support Bioware but Origin can go.... do something unmentionable.

Re: What made you smile today? (1 year ago)
What made me smile yesterday was that after our Valentines Day festivities I asked my girlfriend to move back in with me and she of course said yes
Re: What made you smile today? (1 year ago)
I may have unwittingly made my Tafe sound a bit crap and a bit of a bludge when I described my day to someone:
"So we were told we could arrive at 10 instead of 8 because of everyone recovering from valentines day. When we got there all we did was start watching a movie which was played on a crap projector with a lopsided and blurry display which was hardly visible because of light coming in from the windows which had no shutters. We were then told our teacher for the afternoon class was ill, so there was no afternoon class, at which point we were told we could just go home if we wanted, which most people did."
Explaining that it's a lot better on other days was met with disbelief, I can't think why...

Re: Mass Effect 3 (1 year ago)
I have a problem lately where my DirectX seems to be corrupt, on Steam too some games won't load before "installing directx" every single time. Even though they work fine once they start. Origin just won't load it at all though. I found a DirectX installer on a recent game disk and went through it but got an error near the end and it seemed to rollback any changes. I've also scoured google for a DirectX uninstaller that actually works, so I can get rid of the whole thing and start over. But I've only found one that seems to work and I have to pay for it. I might just end up buying that even though its a ripoff.
Origin won't even load the Demo because Origin stops the game from loading when it recieves the error (the game launcher doesn't even come up, and because everything else works I'm convinced without Origin it would work), so it seems that would probably be the case with the full game too. I think this tips the scale on my decision to pirate this game. I've only ever done it once before but I was already considering it because I don't trust Origin or the safety of my games on the program at all. At least with Steam I trust Valve not to mess things up, and that the service won't disappear and ill lose everything.
With PALGN anarchy at least I'm safe saying that

Re: Which was the last game you finished? (1 year ago)
The Darkness II (PC)
What I liked:
A lot of people won't agree, but I preferred the linear nature of this game, to the mock open nature of the first game, it gave it much more focus and I hated the side missions in the first game. Also, this might partly be because I was using a PC this time around, but shooting things is so much more fluid, it was a bit iffy to control in the first game even for a console FPS.
The cell shaded art style was interesting and weirdly suits the game quite well. Although the gore made me cringe its never cheap and always shocking, which is helped by superb scripted sequences. I also really liked the voice acting, which is excellent, and really helps keep you involved in the story which is the best I've experienced in a game in a while and kept me very, very, hooked.
No world war 1 levels, oh thank the heavens O_O. They are replaced by something a little different which I'm not going to spoil but involves no combat and makes you question whats real in the overall story and what isn't. These scenes are really nice additions to the game.
What I didnt:
Very short. Basic AI again. Also wasn't keen on all the enemies with flashlights, they can get very annoying and disrupt the flow of gameplay, and they are frequent.
Conclusion:
Much better than the previous game. I was hooked from start to finish (which sadly wasn't very long). If only this game was twice as long it could possibly be one of the best games of 2012.

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (1 year ago)
I'm quite liking it so far, not sure how long my enjoyment will last but we'll see. I like the combat. But the story I don't really care about, I'm more interested in leveling up my own character and I'm just skimming through dialogue. No voice acting for the main character is always very detrimental to me caring about a story.
Unlike Cyph I've experienced no bugs or crashes on the PC version and it seems well optimized, not that it looks good or anything but it performs as well as it should do, constant 60fps.

Maybe someone who's finished Trine 2 can help me with this, I would post in a Trine thread except, there isn't one.

skip to 06:55, see how he shoots an arrow at those rocks to let the light in? He has explosive arrows and I've not unlocked those yet. Any other way to proceed with this bit? It can't be the only way through, but firing other arrows does nothing. :/

The gameplay was satisfying and unique, nice lighting and good sound effects and soundtrack, good atmosphere and pacing.
On the other hand, the story became increasingly hard to follow for me, and I think that the most confusing ending I've ever seen. I still have no idea what happened, but my interpretation is something along the lines of; Alan is Tom Zane, he murdered his wife when she told him shes leaving him, Alan Wake is Tom Zane's creation to psychologically cope with what he did. As for everything else that doesn't quite fit well with my interpretation? What this is I don't even. Knockback attacks got too annoying, I got sick of being hit by axes and having to wait for Alan to finish his animation before I could keep moving. The game dragged on for a bit too long for me and should have been coming to a close a few hours before it did, the gameplay didn't change up much and it lacked enough memorable moments. The game wasn't really that scary; the camera zooming in everytime something comes on screen to show exactly where it is didn't help, and I don't take much to scare. and the "comic relief" character only "relieved" me when he finally died.
