Re: FFXIII-2 (1 year ago)
A few bits and pieces of information regarding the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Ultimania Guides have surfaced including the exact weight of these books. Both books weighed on a scale together comes out to about 1.6KG. Ultimania guide books usually come with interviews from the developers of the game, these are no different.
Director Motomu Toriyama and Producer Yoshinori Kitase mention and refer to Noel & Serah's journey as the "Noel & Serah Volume." We can also expect a Lightning Volume, a Snow Volume, a Sazh Volume, and more. These other volumes do not necessarilly mean they will be downloadable content as they pointed out that they could come in different forms like novels.

Recent Interview with Nomura
Quote
Before we get to Final Fantasy Versus XIII... Nomura confirmed that the 1st Production Department is working on Final Fantasy X HD.
As for Versus... Nomura says that the game has improved a lot since last year's trailer, which was shown at the 1st Production Department Premiere Event. The graphics have been taken up a notch.
He also tells us that Versus XIII will have a mix of real time and pre-rendered cutscenes as well. The ratio is said to be 7:3, to which the later being CG FMV created by Visual Works. The pre-rendered scenes won't get in the way of the gameplay itself, which is why the scene between Noctis and Stella has been switched to a pre-rendered scene.
As for when we will see the title next? Nomura says that while an event has not yet been scheduled(details are still being worked out here), the next time we see the game, it will be running on an actual PS3

Recap of the original
The title screen lets includes an option for viewing a narrated recap of the story of the original FFXIII. If you have a save file from the original, you'll also get to see a digest showing scenes from the original.
Item Sales">/b">
Where do you get your items and accessories while traveling through time? There's a girl named "Chocolena" who wears Chocobo themed clothing. She appears in all time eras and locations, and will sell you goods.
Towns
XIII-2 has towns. However, there's no transition from field to towns. You'll just seamlessly enter areas of safety where people reside.
Subquests
You can freely speak to the people you encounter. You'll very often be presented with subquests, including such things as seeking out lost items and defeating special monsters.
Interactive Dialogue
The game has an interactive conversation system called "Live Trigger." Based of the selections you make, the story may develop differently.
The game's time traveling component makes experimenting with Live Trigger easy. In the Historia Crux screen, you can close gates that you've previously opened. A closed gate resets to its default state, allowing you to try different selections.
Fragments
When you clear quests or defeat bosses, you'll get Fragments which include things like information about the world, and notices from the members of Nora. There are around 160 of these fragments.
Event Scenes
It was previously announced that the game has mostly realtime rendered event scenes this time. The impressions say it's about 90% realtime. However, it does seem that there are overall more event scenes compared to FFXIII.
For those who want to get on with things, because the event scenes are real time, you can quickly skip through the dialogue.
Load times
The load times are short, and you can save anywhere you like, allowing for a stress free experience. The only complaint in this area appears to be about crossing time periods in Historia Crux as the load times here are a bit on the long side.
Character Growth
You build up Serah and Noel in a Crystarium, but different from the original FFXIII, which had a Crystarium for each role, each character now has just one Crystarium that's used for all the roles. The roles have exclusive growth routes on the Crystarium.
As you expel your Crystal Points to advance your position to new slots on the Crystarium, you'll gain the status upgrades associated with the slot, and will also be able to make a role level up. You get to select which role gets the level-up.
Monsters level up not through Crystal Points, but through growth items. These can be obtained in battle and from shops (including Chocolena).
As a monster levels up, it will learn new abilities. These abilities are retained across all monsters of the same role (unlike the characters, whose roles can be changed in real time like in the original FFXIII, monsters' roles are fixed).
Accessories & Equipment
You initially have four accessory slots for your characters. By grouping accessories, you get special effects (some of these were detailed when the game's bonus items were announced a few weeks back).
Accessories have cost, and you're limited in what cost a character can hold. For example, if Serah has maximum cost 50 and you equip cost 30 and cost 20 accessories, you can't equip any additional accessories.
For the monsters, you'll find some that some equipment are just used for making changes to physical appearance with no effect on ability. There are many of these items.
The game has so many accessories that one of the players complained that there's a feeling of not having enough Gil to buy it all.
Battle
If you want to make a monster join your party, you don't need to throw a Pokeball or anything of the sort at it. When you defeat a monster, it will just sometimes turn to crystal, making it a part of your collection.
Each monster has unique special skills which can be unleashed when you've built up your Synchro Drive. These moves are done using the game's cinematic quick timer events. Depending on how you do in the QTEs, you'll end up with greater or lesser damage

Some fact sheet of Final Fantasy XIII-2...
Quote
•Hope Estheim – Director of Academy Research, Team Alpha. A tireless work ethic and extraordinary ability have propelled Hope through the ranks of the Academy. Despite his youth, he has become the de facto leader of the research institute. Hope is articulate, considerate, and admired by his peers. He has matured considerably in the ten years since he fought alongside Lightning and the other l’Cie. He is researching “spacetime anomalies” that were discovered at the site of ancient ruins. Sorrowful events in his past once threatened to destroy him, but now they are the fuel that drives him to build a better future.
•Hope Estheim – Yaschas Massif, 10 AF. An encounter with a young man called Hope. Ten years ago, he was an enemy of Cocoon, fighting alongside Lightning. Now, he is the leader of the Academy research institute. While researching ancient technologies, the institute discovers spacetime anomalies and launches an investigation. The sorrows and hardships of Hope’s past life now drive him to build a better future.
•Alyssa Zaidelle - One of the young Academy researchers. Bright and cheerful, she is a popular figure within the institute. She is also a smart and canny scientist, and she has become Hope’s trusted assistant. A strange object has been unearthed in the ancient ruins. Strangely, Noel seems to know more than he’s letting on about the mysterious device. What role will it come to play in the adventures to come?
•Cocoon Destroyed – In the centuries to come, catastrophe will threaten humanity with extinction. One of the catalysts will be the fall of Cocoon. Serah is determined to change that bleak future.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
•The City of Academia – The new capital city of humanity, built beneath Cocoon. Rapid urbanization has taken place under the leadership of the Academy and this highly automated information city stands at the center of a new civilization. But, how many years, how many centuries, must it take to create such a wonder?
•Anomalies – A lively amusement district, brilliantly lit by neon and flashing signs. Normally it would be alive with the hubbub of excited shoppers, but now the only sounds are the woeful howls of Cie’th who haunt the streets.
•Getting Around – Moving walkways are a great way to get around. Learn how to use the control panels to change directions and soon you will be exploring every corner of the sprawling city. Other devices and puzzles are waiting to be discovered.
•Serendipity – Visitors to the casino play games with Casino Coins. Win enough coins and you can exchange them for rare prizes not available anywhere else. Head over to the casino’s exchange counter to purchase some coins and then let the games begin.
•Slot Machines – Serendipity’s slot machines are built into recycled airbikes. Just like people, the machines have moods. Talk to the assistant nearby to pick up hints that might help boost your winnings.
Insert a coin, spin the reels and line up the pictures to match the payoffs shown above. The reels will come to a stop in different ways for that extra bit of tension, just like the real thing. If the goddess of luck is with you, you might hit the jackpot–50,000 coins!
•Chocobo Races – Put your honor – and your hard-won coinage – on the line in the famous Chocobo Races. You can enter your own chocobo and race for the winner’s purse, or bet coins and try to predict the finish order. You have to win chocobo allies in battle before you can enter them in the races. As long as a chocobo is racing for you here in the casino, he won’t be able to join you in battles back in the real world. On the Racing Form, you can change your chocobo’s race strategy, give him items, or place bets on the race. This is also the place to view vital stats for each chocobo, including odds, individual strategies, and conditioning. Check it out before every race!
•Sprinting Start – Press the button the instant the gates open to dash out of the gates and get a headstart on the pack.
•Spurt – Use Spurt during the race to spur your chocobo to an extra burst of speed. The effect will last until the Spurt gauge in the lower right of the screen runs out. Know your chocobo and his abilities, and save Spurt for when it will be most effective.
•Temporal Rifts – Somewhere in a void beyond spacetime float temporal rifts. To escape these timeless labyrinths, adventurers must unlock crystal mysteries and resolve paradoxes. Temporal rifts will be an important part of your journey through the main story; but there will be many other occasions when side stories and quests will bring you to these mysterious places.
•Tile Trial – Once you cross a tile, it is gone forever. There’s no turning back–you have to keep moving forward. Can you gather all the crystals, reach the far side of the maze, and find the gate to your own world?
•The Hands of Time – Walk around the face of time, step on the numbered crystals, and press the button to make the crystals disappear. The hands of time will move around the clock a number of places equal to the number that disappeared. You then choose to erase a new crystal at one of the hands. Your goal is to make all the crystals disappear.
•Kweh! Goes the Chocobo – Unleash your chocobo’s special attack and he will strike the target with a flurry of pecks. It looks cute, but you wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end!
•The Tonberry’s Ultimate Grudge – With its special attack, the tonberry summons a maelstrom of malice. It’s a very tonberry kind of move.

Serah's Background Story
TGS trailer shows Snow and Serah reunited for the first time after two years. Serah is the only character who remembers Lightning as being alive. Everyone else thinks she is either dead or has turned into a crystal. However, Snow believes Serah and heads off to find her sister. He doesn't return and so Serah and Noel set off to find her.
Time Paradoxes
A central component of the game for both gameplay and story. In regards to the story, Lightning no longer exists in the world thanks to the Time Paradox. Only Serah seems to have memory of her. In regards to gameplay, Time Paradoxes will affect different areas of the world in different ways. In one example. A time paradox in Bresha Ruins has caused an enemy called Atlas to appear. How time paradoxes affect an area is a mystery itself. Time paradoxes start happening at the end of FFXIII. What this means is that you won't be able to go back to in time during the events of FFXIII.
Other Characters
As already mentioned. The Hope we saw in the TGS trailer is 10 years older, making him 24 years old. He's part of a group who is searching for energy in the absence of fal'Cie. He knows that Serah is traveling through time because of his research.
Kaias, the villain of FFXIII-2, has an influence on both Valhalla, where Lightning exists, and the regular world, where Serah exist. He is from the future as well.
Noel is from a world of few people, so he's very happy to meet people. Thanks to the time paradoxes, his memory of major events, if they happened or not, is vague.
The smoke we see that surrounds Lighting and Noel is known as "Chaos", which has something to do with Valhalla.
Yuru is also a new character who has deep ties with Kaias and is a pretty important character. Hideo Minaba, who designed her, also designed Hope's adult clothing.
Monster Collecting
The game has a monster raising component and they are placing a good amount of time on this area in the battle system. Rare monsters will exist and have a low encounter rate and are hard to capture. Giant monsters unfortunately won't be in your party. All monsters have different difficulties in terms of inputting a command. Monsters will still attack if you fail at the inputting but succeeding will result in greater damage.
Battle and Character Growth
The way the "Blood Damage" concept works is that with each blood damage hit, you lose a portion of your max HP. FFXIII had a healer so that you could recover from damage without trouble. In FFXIII-2, you can't recover from blood damage, so enemies must be defeated fast. Toriyama says that the staff is making adjustments to areas that may be too hard but the final version has an easy mode and you can switch to it whenever you want.
Unlike FFXIII, FFXIII-2 allows you to be able to change your battle leader in fights. When the current leader dies, you won't get a game over this time around as well. A new addition to the "Paradigim Tune" system is that you can also assign attack AI routines. The options are "normal", "concentrated" and "scattered".

Square Enix has renewed the trademark for Final Fantasy Versus XIII. The original one was filed back in 2006. This one has been filed as of August 31, 2011.
