Re: FINALLY found a laptop (7 years ago)
Put an Orinoco wifi card in it, and get Slackware installed. Then you'll be good to go.
Seriously: that'll probably be fine for everything that isn't too system resource intensive. You may want to consider getting a refund on the home license and installing professional instead.

Make sure that your drivers are up to date.
The ones you'll probably need can be found here, on ATI's website.

Get Lamp - the text adventure documentary (7 years ago)
Jason Scott (the director of the BBS Documentary) has recently announced his latest film in his weblog. Get Lamp is going to be documenting the history of text adventures and interactive fiction.
All i can say is that if he covers the subject as well as he did in his previous documentary, then it'll be well worth the wait.

Re: Undelete Files (7 years ago)
You say that you deleted it from a removable device. Was it a floppy or a flash drive? There are forensics tools for recovering files from magnetic storage (eg. hard drives and floppy disks), I'm not sure whether you can get them for flash based devices.
Re: computer problems (7 years ago)
Different BIOSes have different levels of error detection, though most that I've come across will give beep codes for bad RAM or graphics cards. I'd think that it would be a CPU problem. Some BIOSes will give beep codes for bad CPUs, but from my experience, most don't.

Re: How fast do you use up your net download? (7 years ago)
I'm on 512/256 ADSL at 20:1 at the moment from a small provider based in the UK, so they'll deal with special configuration requests etc. Also, no limits either.
I'd say that at least half of what is advertised in the UK has a limit in some way or another.
The larger problem for the UK is the range of ADSL available; BT provides almost all of the hardware that is fitted for ADSL use at the exchange end, and has a vast about of control via `BT Wholesale' which is what 99% of ISPs just resell. Very few companies actually install their own equipment at the exchange offering faster and more customisable service (they can, see: Bulldog).
If only SDSL was cheaper...

Re: So what have you been saving for?? (7 years ago)
I'm currently saving for a nice and large hard drive to shove in a USB enclosure. That'll be nicer than my broken flash drives which I have to carry around, tied together with elastic bands. I also suppose I'm going to get some money together for a Revolution when it comes out.
Aside from that, I have a small comment to make about Labyrinth:
David Bowie's groin sack/pouch

Lou is MMORPG Item/Character Seller :O (7 years ago)
I am truley shocked. Lou from Neighbours has recently become addicted to MMO gaming and started selling characters and items.
UK neighbours is several months behind Australia, last time I checked, however, that doesn't take away from the shock factor. In the episode of 20050817 Lou even throws on a cloak, while telling Harold about his new source of income. At least now, it seems that the writers of neighbours have stopped scraping the bottom of the barrel for storylines, and come up with something fun!

Re: Franchise Mode #7 - The Final Fantasy Series (8 years ago)
Hironobu Sakaguchi (Creator of Final Fantasy) was considering leaving the game industry when he made Final Fantasy, so this was what he planned to be his final game.
Note to Quin: Final Fantasy IV also was released in the anthology on the PS1.

I would be playing ff11 now if amazon hadn't screwed up my order...
I've been playing ff1 now as a way of working out which starting class to be on ff11.

Re: Can anybody suggest a great Anime series? (8 years ago)
I would definately reccomend Love Hina. That and Azumanga Daioh. The anime series of Azumanga is almost exactly the same as the manga, so once you've seen one, you've pretty much seen the other.
I don't tend to watch too many anime series. Though it's not a series, I reccomend that you watch Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade.

Re: Useful links to make internet friendlier ! (8 years ago)
I've been using mailinator for quite some time now, and the only problem with it (that's very rare) is that some sites have blocked all mailinator email addresses. That's only happened once or twice though.
I can't think of many online tools that are that helpful though. Spybot S&D is definately needed on any system connected to the internet, even if you don't use IE (especially if you do use IE
).

Hypersnap DX should do you for that. Though, it's a trial version for download.
Re: Final Fantasy XI ODT (8 years ago)
As for UK release date, amazon.co.uk seem to be a bit confused.
They say that it'll be released on 17 September, though on my order page, it says it won't be dispatched until 22 October.

Vaseline because it was put on the camera lense in StarWars ep. IV to blur out the wheels on Luke's landspeeder. Armoured guy wants to blur out the IGN logo. Not funny.

Re: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Preview (8 years ago)
I don't really mind about the music that much, just as long as there are at least 2 discussion type radio stations.
One thing that bothered me about previous GTA releases is that there is a distinct lack of children on the streets and mothers carrying babies. I've always wanted to go around with a katana and cut a baby's head off...

Re: What improvements would you like to see to PALGN (8 years ago)
Yes but the whole point of mods is to stop that by fining, editing posts, and banning useres where necessary. You notice that that can be done now by repeated posting, and the spam isn't out of control, is it?
Re: What improvements would you like to see to PALGN (8 years ago)
Well, topics are posted just as normal but a mod/staff/admin could 'validate' the topic so that the originator can recieve $poons for posts in it.
Re: What improvements would you like to see to PALGN (8 years ago)
This is another suggestion that would possibly increase activity in posting new topics.
As opposed to just giving users that post in a topic $poons, why not give the topic originator some $poons aswell. Even if it is a very small amount, ie. $p. 0.1. This would encourage people to create topics that would encourage discussion, thus increasing forum activity.

Re: hi web html free web hosting (8 years ago)
Also, ObsoletE, becomming an ISP isn't going to get you free domains. You must become a domain registrar. And even they have to pay NIC fees for domains so unless you're at the top level, then you won't get them for free.
Re: hi web html free web hosting (8 years ago)
Domain and hosting are completely separate unless some screwed up company starts trying to sell you them both at the same time.
You can get both hosting and domains for free if you want.
First, domains as they're simpler to explain. Various ISPs offer free (sub)domains that link to (and mask your hostin address). The following are widely used free domain registration companies:
domain - http://www.dot.tk/
subdomain - http://www.cjb.net/
subdomain - http://www.ontheinter.net/
These are just some off the top of my head.
As for hosting, it depends what you want. The free hosting services on the internet range from `off-the-shelf' free hosting like geocities, lycos (which supports php and mysql), angelfire, etc... If you're just starting off with tools to help you create and set up a basic HTML site, or you don't know much about what you want then this is definately the choice for you.
Moving towards more complicated types of hosting for absolute beginners. FTP accounts. You use an FTP client to transfer files to your webspace on a server. These files are then accessable via http (ie. they are on the web).
The second most advanced method has to be shell accounts. Also referred to as telnet/ssh accounts. It's basically an account on someone's server that you can use to have a website or anything you can think that you'd use a UNIX shell for. I strongly don't reccomend that you chose to do this if you have no idea what UNIX is.
The final and most advanced method of having a website for `free' is to host it yourself. You have to do everything that you do on the previous method but you have to configure and maintaion th server yourself. In order to do this you MUST have a decent connection to the internet. Everyone would like a 155mb backbone connection, but we can't have that, so you'll need a DSL/Cable connection of some description atleast. It must also be constantly on in order to let people view you website. You will have to know (or learn) how to use UNIX (Linux, BSD, Solaris, they're all roughly the same thing and commonly reffere to as UNIX). You must also know about networking and if you're runnign network services from home then you should have more than one machine. Don't think of running one on a 56K connection.

Re: Graphics Card (8 years ago)
Well, I've used ATI cards since my old 2MB S3 gave in in early 2000. Primarily because of the price and secondly because of OS support.
Windows supports almost all cards fine but Linux is a bit more picky about what it accepts so this is why I use the best ATI card that Linux will happily accept.
Go Radeon 8500 PRO! It's good value now since the 9200s and 9600s have been released, so get it.
On my system with windows on it, it supports every single game that I've ever tried to run on it. Also, my Radeon 7200 was great for it all. Now I think that one's about £15 as OEM.

Re: How Old Are You? (8 years ago)
Yeah, I noticed that when I made it. I could have fixed it but as it's for illustrative purposes only, I didn't. However, here's a [hopefully] fixed version.
