Zero Samus needs no explanation!! Those images would be enough reason to buy the Wii if that was the only game coming out for it!

Samus Aran in a skintight 'zero' suit...with a whip!...i'm there. nintendo just sold me...as if i wasn't already sold icon_biggrin.gif
Re: 100 free Black demos (7 years ago)
just played through it then...by the way, THANKS PALGN! All those things needed a dollar or more postal stamps so it couldn't have been the cheapest little promo to do for you guys!

Anyway, the game...As others have said, yes it is a ridicilously short demo but...visuals and audio are very impressive. It's all a little busy though. There's so much shit blowing up everywhere and smoke and powder etc etc that you have no proper vision of the guys getting hit. As someone else said, little slow on the turn. Other than that gameplay seemed good. Wasn't too easy or too hard to hit enemies. If you get a head shot they go down and if you hit them anywhere else it takes a few to take em down which is great!

If the level design is well done in the full game then it will be great as I can see the harder setting making for some really tight and nervous moments!

Still, I think I'll just hire it for now and finish it that way (free employee rents icon_biggrin.gif)
I may be wrong here as it's just an impression i've had but never really taken the time to compare. I've always found the need for speed games far less graphically appealing on the gcn compared to the ps2? Is this an EA issue? I know that hot pursuit 2 was dodgy basically cause the port team did a half-arsed job. But, when I first played underground 2 on gcn, it did not look as crisp (both in garage car displays and in-game car and environment appearence) as the ps2 two version either. It played as well if not better but just didn't look as good! I've always also had the impression that the ps2 dealt with 'realistic' (Gran turismo etc) graphics far better than the gamecube? Is this just a myth or is it a difference in particular tech capabilities that handle different types of graphics better in each system?

And I largely agree with David (although I am still yet to play re4). Although a little less graphical quality or 'crispness' is not always crucial for atmosphere, complexity of lighting, shading, mist etc play a huge role in any game trying to set a certain distinct or powerful mood. The horror genre is perhaps the most reliant of all on the effective relation of this atmosphere!
maybe I should be happy then that it's the first time it's happened in three years....would copying it onto another memory card and then using that memory card change anything? I assume not if it's just copying corrupted data? academic anyway, copied over it....20 hours down the drain. not happy, had just bought the 911 turbo....

ah well what's the moral to the story....back to nintendo. never buggers up! gaming karma for touching a sony product. icon_biggrin.gif
Cheers man, yeah ps2. f***** EA auto save.
Just hired nfs most wanted to finish the last 3 blacklisters off and it won't load my career. It says that the data 'appears to be corrupt'. The data file comes up fine in the memory card data manager.

How do I fix it/get around it??

I've reset it numerous times, blown in it etc etc....if I can't fix it I certainly won't be bothering to finish the game again!

Any suggestions appreciated
Re: Easy Mode #15 (7 years ago)
great article matt.
Re: Easy Mode #14 (7 years ago)
haha wicked...was that a snes or mega drive game? looks like fun icon_biggrin.gif probably nearly impossible to get!

great overall article matt!
james bond: live n let die on the commodore 64 i think...or that donald the duck one with the grocery shopping....

live n let die was the first I ever clocked anyway, completely by accident...thought I had to get through all the torpedos at the end...went over a jump and just wasted all my missiles cause i was about to die n whattya know, they blew up the city in the distance!! That was how you were meant to finish it!! not that anyone will know what the hell i'm talking about!! icon_cry.gif
haha great work chris! some perfectly placed quoting there!...Gareth, what a champion! Thank god for the office icon_biggrin.gif
Yeah Your right nismo, beat AX on master first go, was easy compared to emerald and diamond!

hyper worm, yeah was sort of a typo. I've beaten hard only on the first two story modes so have the very hard option on them...don't even want to think about it! That's impressive that you've done em all nismo, hyper and 838 (nearly)!!
I just finally finished all the cups on master class! I don't know how many times I came second by a few points in the last and second last cups but I now despise red gazelle and twin norita!! I can't believe my controller is still intact after all that!

What an awesome game though! You get an entirely new cup to complete...all the arcade tracks!

Questions though for anyone that's clocked it all....Is their any way of getting the ships or reading the bios for all of the new racers in the AX cup? Got another track after finishing AX cup on novice...surely that's the last? Not looking forward to finsihing AX cup on master though!....gonna be a bitch.....

and has anyone here clocked all the story modes on hard?!?! Some of them are basically impossible! I really don't think I'll ever be able to do them!

One last question...Has anyone built a ship that is head and shoulders above anything else?! I find that every ship I built always has dodgy balance and control compared to the blue falcon and little wyvern...At the moment little wyvern seems the best?

For anyone that has totally clocked it what ship did you use??
Chris, really awesome work dude! To take that on by yourself and do such a comprehensive and quailty job of it is damn impressive. Maybe you should get one of those copies of gun!

The best thing about it was that it reminded me of so many good games that I've never played and games that I should play again! cheers...

now what about the 100 best arcade games... icon_wink.gif
Very. Ugly. List.

I mean seriously! Burnout!! BOTH HALO's!!!

ah well what can ya do....

Glad tetris got a good showing. SMB3 shoulda been much higher. Good to see chrono trigger. Okay spot for prime. rest is shiezer. Right on theory... go probotector for No. 1!

and why does everyone have to hate on SMB2 all the time!! They made farming violent and those egg shooting bosses rocked!
spanca...It's more based on my bias than what I'd put my money on...I doubt if many of them will be that accurate or even there anyway....if original sonic has already been i'll swap it with earthworm jim just for fun....has no hope but whateva!
Microsoft havn't created anything sexy. With all their money they hire some pretty shitty designers!!....that being said...prototypes are prototypes and as bad as they are they are simply ideas to see what does and doesn't work....

looking at them did make me feel sort of dirty though....
Isn't it a moot point to point out the graphical, weaponry, AI etc superiority of PD over GE? I mean it was done 3 or 4 (?) years later by the same development team. It would have been a joke if those types of things (especially being, as said in the article, 'the spiritual' sequel to GE) hadn't been markedly improved upon. So of course it is a superior 'game'.

For my mind though, and for the context of gaming at that time and expectations of what a gaming experience could deliver at that time GE was a better 'experience' than PD. The experience also changes for everyone a little depending on age and past gaming experience.... Both were great games but with the generation voting in this survey, GE was always gonna beat PD...i'm tipping it for a top 5 placing?!?!

I think there is only one true game that can claim number 1 though! I fear it won't be there at all....My fingers are crossed and I just hope enough other people feel the same as me....It starts with T, ends with S and has 4 letters between and we have a crazy russian genius to thank (or curse depending on how well it behaves at any given crucial stage) for it.

I hope one or both of the paper marios make an appearance as well...possibly wolfenstein, double dragon, gran turismo, metroid prime, leisure suit larry;) and definately SM1 and SM64 could appear in the top 20? maybe a game like boulderdash, the original donkey kong...maybe the 1st or 2nd snes DK's or DK64....Zelda OOT will be their....hmmm...one or two of the command and conquers? original mortal kombat maybe? shouldn't beat street fighter 2 but it was damn popular...Mario Kart DD could make a suprising entry....original metroid should pop it's beautfil head up...I'd like to see earthworm jim but I don't think that'll happen...the original f-zero could be there...alex kid should be be there...duck hunt anyone? Unfortunately i think HALO will make it...

okay chris, so for the sake of that yummy cookie i'll make that a little more readable...

in a rough and particularly biased order from 21 to 1 my predicted top 21 are...

halo
quake
wolfenstein
Command and Conquer
double dragon
gran turismo
original sonic
mortal Kombat
MK double dash
wolfenstein
original DK
DK country
alex kid
zelda OOT
paper mario
metroid prime
metroid
goldeneye
SMB 2
SMB 1
TETRIS

Some of those are very hopeful but it's not my exact wishlist either...i'd love to see boulderdash (be good to see some commodore 64 games there!), earthworm jim and live n let die in there but I hold little hope...there are too many good games that i've just never played that i'm sure will pop up in there! I'll be proud if at least 10 of those are correct!
Re: Fight Club Review (7 years ago)
Great review dude! David fincher and chuck palahniuk must be spewing with what's been done to this game!!
Re: Nintendo Profit Cuts (7 years ago)
Sure Capoeira, but that is no surprise. When companies like sony and microsoft enter a market with a bottomless pit of money to throw at it what would you expect. microsoft and sony have had the money to build good quality hardware and market the absolute shiezer out of it. They have also poured a lot of money into reaching an older demographic.

As was mentioned above, nintendo will now continue to simply build what they want and get by. They will never lose their real fans to which there are many. Too many people know and respect nintendo for the risks they take in the name of gaming evolution. The fact that they have continued to take risks with their hardware in the face of such competition is to their credit. Many other large companies used to dominating an industry would have sold out and gone the mass-marketing way to try and keep up. They have kept true to their idea of console gaming; affordable, bulletproof and revolutionary hardware and software. It might be a very different situation if they had continued to lead the market. Maybe they would still be doing what they are doing but only more so with the extra money but I am just glad they are still making stuff that can get me excited about playing games.

Being the market leader means jack-all if your as naff as microsoft or as hard-nosed, repetitive and boring as sony. They make have great hardware but it's all too safe. Too many people feel the same way to ever. I think the niche that Nintendo have is just too solid to let them down unless they made something really dodgy and started treating their customers like crap...
Re: Nintendo Profit Cuts (7 years ago)
Thanks David....Couldn't be bothered checking the details of my comments icon_biggrin.gif But I knew I was more or less right with what I said icon_smile.gif That admission should give all great confidence in the veracity of my future posts icon_wink.gif

That's interesting about the 64. I was always under the impression that the ps1 killed it but I never checked the figures. Good to know as the 64 was a_far_superior console in so many ways! Anyway, good to have someone who can clean up my half-informed sweeping statements!
Re: Nintendo Profit Cuts (7 years ago)
In trouble? Don't be scared...Maybe read the article again...Nintendo continue to post_big_profits.

Nintendo have thier fingers in far too many pies to ever be in trouble. If their fiscal health depended on the success of their main home consoles they would have gone bust with the 64. Sure, greater success for their last too consoles would have made their profits even happier but they have made, and continue to make, a lot of their money from handhelds and the gaming franchises associated with these. They also have a controlling share in the Bandai toy company to name but a few of those other 'pies'...The success of the revolution would only be a bonus to their profits...and a little bitter something to shove in the sony and microsft execs pipes so they would choke on their own....(rant aborted for sake of this thread staying constructive icon_biggrin.gif )
Good point Chris-Leigh!

As for nintendo! All this complaining about a few dead pixels!! Pah! My gameboy classic is only 15 years old (basically new!) and the screen is slowly blacking out from the top down! I can't see the top half-inch of the screen and that can be tragic when frantically trying to save a game of tetris! The plastic screen has also fallen off it's so sensitive that small bumps turn it off... the buttons aren't very reponsive anymore either! Unbelieveable! How do Nintendo get away with such poor build quality! icon_biggrin.gif icon_wink.gif icon_wink.gif

The funny thing is, with the lifetime guarantee they used to put on everything I could probably send it off and get a replacement! Just bought a basically new classic today for 15 bucks and got it with the original 'game boy' hard plastic carry case! so awesome. Way cooler than an i-pod or psp! It's huge, it's grey, it says game boy and the 'eighties-tech' style shape kicks ars! should be a huge magnet for the ladies! icon_biggrin.gif

Anyway, it's way more responsive than the old one...now I think I can finally break that half million tetris score!
Haha...We need to update your title dude! PR/ Marketing director for PALGN and Sony Australia! icon_biggrin.gif icon_wink.gif At this rate you'll be there in a few years!! icon_biggrin.gif

All good points though! You won't see me in the line tomorrow but i'm sure I'll succumb to the lure of such big and shiny handheld graphics one day....maybe when the price hits about 250...In terms of gaming it's still just a glorified ps2 with a few extra multimedia funtions!!....But it's just so sleek and sexy....mmmm....*slaps own face*....i'm gonna hafta to lock myself indoors tomorrow! The lure is just too strong...Must...stay...true...and...keep...moral....fabric...intact!
Be interesting to see what they can do with this one. Like has been said, a 2007 release would require some pretty special graphics and hopefully some cool new features...

David, did you mean Rye will be 'dishevelled' instead of 'unshevelled'?
well...okay, maybe just this once....cause it's just so damn easy!! icon_biggrin.gif icon_wink.gif
You all just wait...first it was one post...now it's 2 posts in a coupla weeks...next it will be four in a week and...it's just slowly building up till they have us in the palm of their hands...this time next year it will be 100 in an hour and we'll still be like 'pah, easy! when are they gonna make this hard?'...they are imprinting thought patterns onto our brain in an effort to make this site the biggest in the world!! World domination through mind control! ah so passe! Just know PALGN, I see through your machiavellian little plot and will not let you manipulate me!!
Great decision and well done Chris! Good idea to beef up European coverage!
Re: State Of Play #12 (7 years ago)
Nice article brendan. The fact about GTASA is that it's ALL gratuitous and amoral! That's not a problem. It should have an R rating anyway. I would consider myself extremely liberal when it comes to sex, violence etc in media. But I wouldn't buy GTASA for my own child at any age. If he wanted to buy it when he was 18, fine. If he played it at a younger age I wouldn't be too concerned either. But I wouldn't buy it for him or let him own it until he was at least 16-18 depending on his maturity level. Why can't they just include the pointless sex like all the other pointless acts in it and make it R....Because they won't make anywhere near as much money! Totally understandable but ridiculous all the same.

It cannot be denied that the reaction to 'hot coffee' is a joke. Killing and stealing etc etc are looked down upon in society as far worse than sex, be it 'throwaway', 'sexist' etc or not.

It's hilarious. Meanwhile, I will continue to enjoy creeping up behind innocent civilians, slitting their throats, stealing there money, cursing their carcasses and putting the boot and the knife in a few more times for good measure. Hell I might even jump in a stolen car and run over their blood soaked twitching flesh a few times just to show the cops they can't do sh*t before I fill their heads with lead and fire a rocket at the ambulance that comes to help them. Good times, Good times. But god forbid I give pleasure to a woman on the street though. That would be wrong. Honestly, a game like this feels strangely lacking without the added dimension of sex being a normal par to it...
Just read this article from gamespot on it...

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/07/15/news_6129301.html

Not to undermine PALGN's coverage of the situation which has been excellent, but this article seems a good wrap up and makes some good points. It sounds like the 'hot coffee' minigame on the ps2 version at least is pretty tame and wouldn't make it R even if it was just a normal part of it? That sort of thing is shown on any number of M15 or MA15+ tv shows and films. Many M and MA movies have breasts and reasonably realistic sex scenes in them anyway!

Some comments I read on a gta mod site were also good. They made the point that it is easy to download 'nude patches' for some of the sims games which then show all genitalia and and sex scenes. These games are rated teen yet the patches are easily accessed albeit not in the original code most likely. I still hear no uproar?? It seems that although the hot coffee minigame is in the original code I think anything more graphic than that on the xbox or pc versions would be mods made by hackers.

It's hilarious though...I work at a blockbuster store and suddenly everyone has streamed in to buy gtasa!! It's even been reduced in price so we can get rid of them!! icon_biggrin.gif You can't rent it anymore though. Blockbuster, being the 'clean, respectable family video rental company' that they are (Based in america of course) don't want anything to do with it...although they have no problem renting softcore porn... They can stop the rental but they can't stop selling it yet in Australia. I bet sales of gamesharks and the action replay max will skyrocket as well! hilarious! icon_biggrin.gif
