Re: Windows on a Mac - virus question... (5 years ago)
Yeah, I'm aware of why Macs are not frequented by viruses - that's by the by.
I don't know what all that networking stuff means to be honest.
Just want to know what to do to safeguard the Mac while playing HL2.
Free downloads don't sound all that reliable, but I'll look into it.
Might have to buy one of those programs that were recommended just there.
The last thing I want are viruses on the Mac.

Windows on a Mac - virus question... (5 years ago)
Hey!
I'm thinking of setting up Windows on my iMac - it's one of the Intel-based ones and all that.
Anyway, the plan was to get a copy of XP, instal it, buy an adequate mouse, and then play HL2 and stuff like that.
So, the question is:
What will having Windows on a Mac mean for viruses?
I know that Macs are very good at not getting 'infected', but if I instal and run XP, do I need to also purchase and instal anti-virus software?
If so, what's some good software to think about getting?
Thanks for any info!

I haven't been around the forums in a while...
I'll say this:
I have no problem with the game depicting a cathedral, as there are many forms of media (films, novels, etc.) that also depict scenes of violence in religious buildings, and they are not regulated.
That said, having a bit of respect for something that millions of people worldwide consider to be important is not a lot to ask, and the religion-bashing that goes on whenever this sort of news comes up really f***ing annoys me.
I'm all for religion having a sense of humour about itself, and it should relax a lot on a bunch of issues, but damn it, when people attack those who respect reigion or religious institutions...
Says more about those people than anything else - if you take offence to this comment, then it's because I took offence to something you may have said.
Now, I'm not an Anglican, so I have no personal qualm with Sony using a Church of England cathedral in their game.
Had it been a Greek Orthodox church, I'd probabl still not be annoyed, so long as there was nothing to it that explicitly went out of its way to insult or undermine something that is central to the very culture of many people.
Moral of the story?
Sony hasn't done anything wrong here.
It's fiction.
And it's not attacking anything about any religion - it's depicting conflict in a cathedral.
I mean, 'Eternal Darkness' for the GCN had levels in a big cathedral, AND one of them was during WWI (I think) - nobody said anything then.
It's attention-seeking, yes.
That said, some people decide that when they disagree with something, that it's their right to insult or undermine, and that might offend some people.
Just keep it in mind.
And that's my first post in weeks (maybe months?).

Re: The best news I've heard for awhile! (5 years ago)
I just read this over on Kotaku and raced over here to see if anybody was talking about it.
It's been a terribly long wait for first-party Nintendo franchises to hit the Wii, and to be reminded of the possibility that the wait could go on for a lot longer is not a good thing.
I want to buy 4 games this year.
One is for the DS (Zelda), and the other three are for the Wii (Smash Bros., Super Mario, Metroid) - I'd hate to have to wait until 2008 for some of these games, just because I have a PAL system.
If I may quote from the Kotaku piece the line that sums up my senitments exactly (and which made me laugh out loud):
"It's June already, if you can't confirm with them that these games will be out this calendar year, people will freak the f*** out."

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass Preview (5 years ago)
I recall reading somewhere that initially Nintendo was designing the game around the directional pads and so on, but that it didn't work the way the game designers were hoping.
As an alternative, they turned to the stylus, which is used for movement, drawing on the screen, and utilising weapons.
The limited information out there says that the stylus works really well for this game.
I'm willing to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt on this one.
At a time when my general interest in video games is waning, the core Nintendo games always remind me of why I'm into video games in the first place, and the games haven't dissapointed me yet.
I'd guess they're not about to mess up a franchise like Zelda - sure, it's possible, but the game looks great from what I've seen so far (albeit, I haven't seen much).

Playing 'Metroid Fusion' - up to the boss Nightmare - SO annoying!

But it's been happening more lately - finding that I need to really think if I am into video games enough to keep buying them, and yes, it's usually just after a big purchase too!

I know this has been asked before probably, but how come certain forum members have coloured names?
Is it a staff thing, or a mod thing, or a writers thing?
I saw crestfallen has one, and well, I want one too.
Nah, seriously, just wondering.

What theory said.
Retro gaming is my ultimate form of gaming.
New stuff can be cool, fun and impressive, but retro gaming tops it all in my books.
There's so much to be said for old-school simplicity!

They should concentrate on Pikmin 3 instead of Batallion Wars for the Wii imo.
Although, I'd like to see what they do with 'Battalion Wars' for the Wii.
As for 'Smash Bros.' - I can see how it wouldn't be everybody's cup of tea, and even for me it's not my favourite game, but I had a lot of fun with the GCN instalment.
Multiplayer on that was so much fun - very fast-paced, and always brought about a lot of laughter.
'Super Paper Mario'...
All the waiting, and I've lost a lot of my interest for this game.
I may still buy it, or I may just wait out 'Super Mario Galaxy' - we shall see.
Re: The state of YOUR game (6 years ago)
I think what I'm about to say corresponds with what DIU was saying.
Honestly, I was more engaged with 'New Super Mario Bros.' on the DS than I was with 'Gears of War' on the Xbox 360.
It's just the simplicity and a formula that seems to work in a timeless sense.
I mean, to go a step further, the 2D 'Metroid' and 'Super Mario' games get my attention more than, say, just about everything I've read about in the past 6 months on any games website (just about, but not entirely).
It's like the newest and flashiest game today - in 10 years, people may scoff at it as being old and out-dated, as we do to many 3D games of about 10 years ago that look awful by today's standards.
But somehow, a whole heap of old NES and SNES games still have me coming back for more, and the GBA and DS are totally capitalising off that - there's something to that for a significant segment of the video gaming community.
Don't get me wrong, I am impressed by new games and graphics.
But for me, that stuff wears off very fast, and I find myself looking for my old-style gameplay after a while.
So, like crestfallen said, I can totally respect the tastes of people who like other aspects of games - it's veriety in demand that leads to variety in supply.

Re: Ultimate Duck Hunting coming to Wii (6 years ago)
I'm with Qbert and DIU on this one.
The headline sucked me in, but when I got there, the cupboard... it was bare... except for some poorly rendered ducks...
I too would like to see a real Duck Hunt sequel with the Wii-mote and a gun-style shell to make it 'cooler' - that would be cool!
It must, and I mean MUST, see a return of the dog.
Duck Hunt dog - I salute you!

Re: The state of YOUR game (6 years ago)
Some brief thoughts on the state of gaming right now:
- There's not a whole lot out right now in terms of video games that interests me (maybe I'm not into gaming in general like I used to be) - this has led me towards a more niche area of gaming - retro-styles.
- I don't foresee myself getting an Xbox 360 or PS3, because I don't want to spend the money, and while I think they both have great games and have their respective benefits, they're just not for me.
- Twilight Princess was great, but it was not as good as the hype, in my opinion - OoT was like nothing I had ever played and just seems so perfect in my mind - TP was heaps of fun and a fantastic game, but not my favourite - I think I had more fun with TWW (and loved the art style).
- The DS rocks! - wish there was another Super Mario platformer at least announced or something.
- The Wii has so much potential, but mine just sits there - waiting for games... but knowing what's inevitably going to come along, I think I'll be more than happy when we're hit with the Super Mario, Zelda and Metroid games.
- I'm not really into shooters that much, or racing games, and am not into sports games - they can be a lot of fun, but they're not my favourite.
- What's with spin-offs? - I hate spin-offs...
- Innovation = the best - when it comes to sequels, I'd love it if developers could do something with the franchise and ramp it up a bit - I don't like gimmicks - something that takes the core dynamic, but takes it to the next level - the best example of this that I have seen is the Super Mario platformer series - there have been seom hiccups, but generally, each instalment has really added new elements that take advantage of the system's abilities (this is purely subjective though).
- I like Nintendo games - I mean the first-party stuff.
- I also like Sony, Microsoft, and any other games that are done well - in other words, I like any game that is good - liking one thing is not mutually exclusive to liking another thing.
- I still think the DS rocks!
- And finally, as a PAL gamer, I don't like the way we're treated when it comes to releases and delays - and as an Australian gamer, I don't like the way we're treated when it comes to prices.
I'm done here...

And more often then not your study something you like.
Yeah, uni... easy... sure...
I haven't had an easy moment since I started.
Commerce wasn't as bad as Law is, but doing dual Accounting and Finance and trying to hit Ds and HDs was a lot of work (especially with corporate finance - valuing stuff took me a while to get the hang of).
And now with Law - hardly a moment to take a breath!
So far the marks have been fan-fricken-tastic, so the hard work has paid off - I complain about the work, but then I remember that I chose to put myself through this.
My point?
Uni is the most fun you'll ever have in your life.
Seriously, the friends I've made and the freedom I have to do stuff - all great stuff.
But, uni is also hard work if top-end marks are what you want.
Sure, it depends on your degree and your natural abilities, but it hasn't been a walk in the park for me.
Strike a balance (this coming from somebody who's way off balance right now, but trying to set things right again)!
Re: High School - Sandpaper or cheesecake? (6 years ago)
School... yeah, it wasn't that long ago.
I finished high school in 2003, and worked my arse off for the HSC - it paid off when I got above 99.
Moral of the story: work hard - it pays off and you get to do the course you want at the uni you want.
Now, well, I'm a uni student.
I've completed my first degree (D average - woo!), and am now onto my second, working my arse off yet again.
My advice is this:
While you should not let the HSC crush you, you should give it a serious go if you can.
It isn't the biggest thing in your life, in fact, once you're onto the next stage it ceases to matter.
However, the HSC is there to pigeon-hole you.
Think of it as currency - the more of it you earn during Year 12 by working hard, the more you have to spend when it gets to the university admissions process.
If you have a good result, you stand that better chance of getting to study what you want, where you want, and that's just going to help you later on down the track when you're trying to land that big job that'll start your career.
So, yeah, don't take it too hard, but work consistently and to the best of your ability, and it'll pay off.
Unless you don't care about the result, in which case, have fun instead!
(It is possible to work hard and have fun - it's just a matter of time-management and good use of that time!)

^ Whether you'll turn out to be right or wrong, griffter99, what you've said are my sentiments exactly.
This may very likely be the drought period where games are made to utilise the new functionality, but it won't be until Nintendo punches out a few of their main games that other developers settle down, by which time the list of games in development will be about ready to start releasing.
I'm certain there'd be those who disagree with comparing the Wii to the DS, and at this stage, there really is no way of telling, but I don't think it's an unreasonable comparison at this stage, and it's clearly the mentality of Nintendo as a company right now.

I've always loved games, and made them part of my identity. Sometimes I find a nasty little thought sneaking in questioning if I still actually like them, or I'm still playing just because I always have.
