Re: Ubisoft: 20th Anniversary Feature (6 years ago)
The whole game industry is worse off due to POP:SoT, XIII, and BG&E not doing better.
It's very sad that Ubisoft's most innovative period didn't pay off better. As a gamer, I do hope they return to that period, but I can't really blame them for sticking to staid franchises and tie-ins if that's what gets them money. The first Splinter Cell was very innovative, and Kong was good (for a movie license - I don't think it's as good as reviews make out), so I guess they've showed that license doesn't always equal crud. That, is a very good thing
It would be great if they had an indie branch just like the big film companies, so that the 'blockbusters' can subsidise games for the more discerning gamer and game creator.

Re: Suggest me some PS2 games (7 years ago)
MegaMan Warrior, I know what it's like, I was a games addict who skipped the 32bit gen, and had a lot to learn.
Firstly, 2D fighters better than SNK v C:
Guilty Gear X (and X2:reload)
C v SNK 2
M v C 2
KOF 02/03
Street Fighter Ann Ed. (Strongly advised to import so you can play SF3)
Other highly praised games for the PS2 (not already on your list):
Platformers: Ico/Shadow of Collosus, Prince of Persia (any)
Beat em Up: DMC 1 and 3, God of War
Shooters: Graidus, Rez, R-type:Final
Music games: Gitaroo Man, Space Channel 5 (1 or 2)
Racing games: Burnout 3 or Revenge, Outrun 2006.
Survival Horror: RE4, and 'the rest' (which are generally 'good').
3d Fighters: VF4:Evo (for the l33t), Soul Calibur 3 (the looks).
Sand box games: Grand Theft Auto III/VC/SA (one will be enough), and the rest (generally 'poor').
Games for parties: Super Monkey Ball:DX, Singstar, We love Katamari
DOA2 is awesome - really fun, but is just not as pretty as it used to be.
My list is missing sports and RPG games because they aren't my forte

Um, I'd just like to alert you guys that the online game's library, infinitegameplay.com.au seems to have done the dodgy.
I won through PALGN, a two-month subscription to infinitegameplay, and having liked their service, stuck with them for a few months more.
Then money got a bit tight so I cancelled my subscription (January).
Early last week I was billed again for some reason. It wasn't even inline with when I should have been billed if they didn't realise I cancelled my subscription (i.e. in March).
When I noticed this I sent them and email and phoned and left a message on their answering machine service.
A week later and no reply, I tried calling them and now their phone is no longer connected.
I think I got shafted... They still have my credit card details.

Re: Rampage: Total Destruction Review (7 years ago)
Yeah, I think this game falls into the 'Godzilla: Save the Earth' category. (i.e. Lame)
If you want a good giant-monster-who-smashes-stuff game, I highly recommend War of the Monsters on PS2.
That, or a Mecha game.

Is that the game where you're on the Ship (the RE ripoff)? I was anticipating this game quite a bit and then I saw it on store shelves and I hadn't seen any reviews of it yet. Regardless I took the risk and bought it....took it home and....man I seriously don't remember being so disapointed with a game ever before. I thought the graphics were horrible and so was the control. Anyways I played it for like 1-2 hours and took it back the next day. Cold Fear has been dead to me ever since.
Strange, it seems as though PALGN and myself are the only ones who played this game and liked it....
I own the PS2 version, which IMHO looked excellent. However it had one major drawback: load times were really really bad.
As for the movie, two things are in it's favor;
1. It'll be a zombie movie, FFS!!
2. Uwe Ball isn't making it.

Trust me i know because i have played almost every streetfighter game!
The loading times are NOT 30 seconds!!!
more like 4-5 secs.
I play this game everyday! And im not even a hardcore fan.
Its a game you can just pick up your PSP, and quickly have some great battles!!!

I've got a few questions:
1. I heard the aspect is squished quite a lot, (like nearly all the PAL versions of SF). I assume it's either squished, or the play area is far longer (which would also affect play a fair bit). Can you verify?
2. Another thing I heard is that it's basically a port (of the fairly good) PS1 version. Good, yes, but it was missing frames of animation. Is that the case for the PSP version also?

imagine if nintendo did it. Youd be halfway through playing a new zelda game, when you get to some person that you have talk to, only to read about 10 lines of advertising for the latest schick razor blade, before you get to any info.
Or when you finally obtain the matersword, written down the side of the blade is an advertisement of mcdonalds new deli choices menu.
Or you get to a tressure chest, hoping its some awesome weapon, when out comes a small key in the shape of the new toyota yarris.
Even worse, imagine playing a super mario bros game, just after defeating bowser, instead of seeing a toad tell you that the princess is in another tower, its ronald mcdonal, telling you about saleds plus.
I really hope nintendo doesnt follow sony on that decision.

It otherwise sounds like SoC is a PFY from BOFH.

Re: Game Grudge Match (GGM) Round 1: Quake or Doom? (7 years ago)
Doom for me... FPS over the school's PC network was teh bomb... and then playing over the modem vs. friends after school!
Awesome.
Quake is the better game of course, but for it's impact at the time, it's got to be DOOM.

Perhaps you mean 'in to the black' or 'out of the red'?
black = good balance sheet,
red = bad.

Re: The Greatest 100 Games Ever: 40-21 (7 years ago)
All good games, but I'm most shocked that SF2 didn't make higher.
Back in the day, it was bigger than Jesus.
I'll be quite sad if Mortal Kombat rates higher.
I would also put GTA3 higher than GTA:VC, and GE higher than PD purely because of originality.

Yeah well there were 5 copies and I picked up one for me and one for my friend, eBay
It was stickered at $19.95, but there was a $5 discount for some reason... a special offer or something.

I just paid up and skipped out the store with a big stupid grin on my face.

I know how highly regarded the game is around here, so I though I'd give it a special mention.

a simple way to mod-chips banned in the next generation will be to simply leave the consoles unlocked for regionality. then Sony (and whoever else) can argue that now there is no use for mod-chips aside from the illegal and they can be banned again.

Strange that it was also not questioned that PAL prices are exorbitant

If all the games released in Japan or the US were released here, for the same price, then there would be no case for modchipping.
The SMAGE has a "Best 50 games" article by Jason Hill.
(The article is a bit Nintendo-heavy IMHO... plus, Pokemon, Tekken 5 and two GTA games? pfft.)
"For this list, games have been judged on their entertainment value today rather than their impact when released. Many highly influential games, including Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Command & Conquer, Elite, Pitfall, Street Fighter and Pong are absent." Fair enough. As a result, there's quite a few sequels.
So it's not quite the same as "Best 50 of all time".
Y'know I think it's a good thing that games with sequels will split the vote, although SMB and SB3 don't both belong in the top 10 even though I think they'll be there.

Of course there are boring games. Just like there are boring movies, boring books and boring people. I don't agree that a majority are boring, but there certainly are a lot of them.
However, I think your comparison to movies is spot on. Just like I'm unlikely to go the the local aleph-null-plex to see Matrix 3 -even though everyone says how terrible it is- just too see how it ends.
(Like I'm not going to buy every year's installment of NBA Live. )
I'd rather spend my ticket money on seeing something different at one of the arthouse cinemas.
Another comparison could be to music; Sadly "most" people like pop. That's great, but for me it doesn't cut it. I can see that in a few years time, you can have your EB stores (say Sanity equivalents) and hopefully there'll be more specialty game stores (say Au-go-go equivalents).
Re: PSP firmware downgrade available (7 years ago)
Talking about firmware holes is about the same as talking about PS2 memory card exploits*. Both allow homebrew and (at least potentially on the PSP) pirated software also.
This doesn't support piracy. Your computer can run software unsigned by either Microsoft, IBM or Apple. Giving your console the same ability is not the same as running pirated software.
*If PALGN has had a policy against this or swapmagic etc, then it would seem like an about face.
