Re: Binary Domain (1 year ago)
I downloaded the demo off the US PSN today and played through it. It wasn't really on my radar (despite being developed by Yakuza Team), but now I'll definitely be buying it. It's like an awesome mix of Vanquish (robots!) and Dead Space (dismemberment!) with some unique squad/voice mechanics. The demo wasn't really enough to tell if the Consequence System will live up to its potential, but the voice squad commands were fun to use, and I had no issues with the game understanding every order (using a PS Eye's mic). It's just so much more simple and natural to tell your teammates what to do (or answer them) using your voice rather than fumbling around with button presses. Speaking of controls, the game controls wonderfully, almost as precise as Vanquish (which set the bar in my opinion). I was a little worried seeing as Yakuza Dead Souls has seemed to cop some criticism for janky controls, but no such problem here. Hopefully the story will be great too, early indications (trailers and Nagoshi & co. previous work) point to it being good. The premise is just so intriguing.
Re: FFXIII-2 (1 year ago)
Mighty Ape are selling UK imports of this for only $49.99 (plus $4.90 delivery), which is cheaper than Ozgameshop.

PS3
360

I was just going to wait until it dropped in price, but this is bloody cheap, and I surprisingly enjoyed the demo, seems they took a lot of the complaints on board.

EDIT: What are the ethics on cancelling an EB preorder, and keeping the Steelbook case? They gave me the case like 3-4 weeks ago, but fuck paying more than double the price.
Re: Dark Souls (1 year ago)
So, I checked the Ausgamez website, and this is only $58.64 on both PS3 and 360 for the Limited Edition. I've only used this site once before to buy Resistance 3, and it took 4 days to arrive, so I just bought Dark Souls now on impulse. Haven't played Demons Souls, but I'm looking forward to the challenge. I watched a bit of gameplay and the open world design with heaps of secrets hidden about (not to mention the online integration) looks really interesting. With Batman delayed on PC, this'll tide me over to the insane number of Nov releases (like 5 or 6 icon_eek.gif , 4 of which are huge open world games. Good thing there's nothing more until Feb/March next year)
The hell?!?

Oh wow, thank god for the patch that just released this morning. Load times are now 5-10 seconds for me, compared to up to 30 seconds prior to the update.
Anyone who has or is getting the PC version, first to PM me can have an "Explosive Mission Pack" DLC code. I bought the Augmented Edition on PC, and it already comes with that DLC (as well as some Tactical Pack), so I got an extra code from pre-ordering.

Also, what's the best fov setting for a 16:9 1080P monitor?
Other than a whole 1 minute spent with the terrible DMC3 pc port, I haven't played a DMC game, so I'm not aboard the hate bandwagon (which I'm a little perplexed by). I'm actually quietly anticapating the game solely on the back of Heavenly Sword and Enslaved. I will agree however, that the main character design is horrible, but at least he looks a little less emo now. And I agree, I'm kinda digging the art design.
Looking forward to this. Love SotC, but never played ICO and have just never bitten the bullet and bought it off ebay. And it's only $39 at ozgameshop, which is way cheaper than buying a copy of ICO for the ps2 off ebay. Not to mention the 1080p 60fps goodness. Does anyone know whether this'll be released on the PSN though (like most other ps2 collections)? If it is, I'll have to decide whether to just download ICO seeing as I've played through SotC numerous times. Though playing it again in HD wouldn't hurt icon_wink.gif

EDIT: Oh wow, it's out next month icon_eek.gif I didn't think it was out til november.
After playing through No More Heroes and Shadows of the Damned in the past month (and loving the hell out of both), I'm definitely keeping an eye out for this!
I finished Castlevania Lords of Shadow, and it has fast become one of my favourite action games this gen. I should've gotten into sooner, but if I recall, it came out the same day Enslaved did, and that game appealed to me more, so I decided to hold off on this for a bit, then all the other blockbusters were released in November and I completely forgot about it.

But anyway, the presentation is definitely what impressed me most. Fantastic art design throughout, it really does feel like an epic adventure when you're constantly travelling through new gorgeous environments with stunning views. And the soundtrack is one of the best I've heard. Love it! As for the game, it's just as great, though a few flaws let it down slightly, mainly the camera. Combat is a lot of fun, and I prefer it over God of War. Only thing I wish they mimicked is using the right stick to dodge. A few too many times I'd accidentally roll instead of block because both actions are tied to L2. But when it works it's so exhilarating when you're on your last sliver of health against a tough boss, pull off a perfectly timed block and counter to fill up your focus, and gain the upperhand when you can then fill your magic bars up. The platforming and puzzles were pretty good too, and worked nicely at providing some variety.

I should also add that I've never played a Castlevania game before, but I really don't get all the fuss about it being different from previous installments (it's a fucking reboot -_-). The game is awesome in its own right, and after that really cool post credits cutscene, I can't wait to see what's next from Mercury Steam. I'm now contemplating whether to get the DLC or not. I've heard mixed reactions, so I might wait until it's cheaper (if it ever does go on sale). Seems dumb to pay $30 for the 13-14 hour main game, then pay another $29 for 1-2 hours of content. In the meantime, I might go back through some levels to get the few gems/arks I missed, and maybe do a few trials on Paladin.

I also played through Bioshock 2: Minerva's Den on PC. It took its damn time to arrive on PC, but after finishing it, it was well worth the wait. Amazing, especially after that ending. Voice work was really great, and it was bugging me throughout the game, as I recognized Charles Porters voice, but couldn't quite put my finger on who it was. A quick google search just now, and I found out it was Carl Lumbly who now I remember played Dixon on Alias. Anyway, this is DLC done right, I got a good 4 or so hours out of this, for only ~$12. Only downside was the pacing. Cramming what could've been an entire game if it was fleshed out more (with a few more levels etc) meant you were practically tripping over audio logs every few steps, and constantly getting more weapons/plasmids/tonics than you know what to do with. But it's a very minor quibble, and the amazing story more than made up for it. Oh god that ending, so good. Honestly, I think I preferred this over the Bioshock 2 campaign.
I downloaded the demo this morning and it seems alright. At first I didn't really like it, but once I got used to the vehicles handling, I started enjoying it. While the driving is fun (and the 'shift' mechanic is actually really cool when you try it yourself), there's really not much else to the game to tempt me to buy it (will probably just rent). The graphics are fairly bland. Vehicles look good, and it runs at 60fps, but the city looks shit with alot of aliasing. And I'm not getting the PC version due to Ubisofts fucking stupid DRM (though I can always just use a crack like I did with Splinter Cell Conviction). Lastly, I probably shouldn't make hasty judgement on this, but the way they're trying to tie the 'shift' mechanic into the story is a bit ridiculous. I don't know though, I never believed Shattered Memories could have an ending where it all makes sense upon the revelation (one of the best game narratives ever), so I'll wait and see.

Oh, and what the fuck is with the advertising in the game? There's a billboard practically everywhere, all with Ubisofts logo... icon_rolleyes.gif
Went to EB's website and the PC version is already sold out. icon_annoyed.gif Guess I'll take that as a positive, I really shouldn't spend $200 for a statue (don't much care for art and the dvd will be up on youtube anyway) when ozgameshop have the standard for $43.
Finished Shadows of the Damned today, what a great ride, loved the ending. Not much more to add to what I've said in the "what are you playing" thread. I enjoyed the more interesting 'puzzle' segments towards the end (would've loved to see more), and it was longer than I anticipated, taking about 8.5 hours. I guess one of the coolest final lines of dialogue best sums my feelings up, I love killing f**king demons! Shame we'll never see a sequel, but I'm not surprised considering EA's poor marketing. If it weren't for the thread here, I wouldn't have even been aware of the bloody thing.

I also played through Spiderman Shattered Dimensions on PC, and what a surprisingly enjoyable game! I've never played a Spidey game before, so can't compare it to the open-world games in the series. But this was a really solid game, nothing special for a non-spiderman fanatic (I've only seen the movies, not much else), but a fun game to blow through. A major part of the game that drew a completionist like me into it is the insane number of challenges (180) and collectibles. They were a lot of fun to chase down, and worth doing for the combat and character upgrades you unlock.

And having 4 universes to play through kept the variety of environments interesting (looks amazing maxed out at 1080p, the clean and colourful visual style looks great at high resolutions). Pity the variety in locales didn't translate to a whole lot of variety in gameplay. While I never got sick of the repetitive structure of levels, it would've been nice to have a few levels approach things differently. Out of the 4, I definitely had the most fun playing Spiderman Noir. It was crazy easy (the whole game is a breeze really), but awesome taking down goons from the shadows. Oh, and all 4 had some of lamest jokes I've come across in a game, but I wasn't playing it for its dialogue.
I played through Wolfenstein 2009 on PC, and... I thought it was pretty shit to put it bluntly. It's certainly functional and nothing is broken, but everything about it was just so uninspired and it became a slog to get through to the end, which is odd considering the game is under 5 hours. The hub worlds became a real pain in the ass near the end, continually having to backtrack through the same bland looking streets to kill the same respawning enemies over and over (though upgrading the shield power means you can usually sprint right by them). There's no incentive to really explore the hubs either. You get enough gold from missions to upgrade all your weapons, and I couldn't be bothered reading any of the Intel seeing as the story was pretty boring and pathetic. The missions were all bog-standard affairs, never really taking advantage of using the Veil powers in interesting ways. I didn't hate my time with it (I still finished it), but ultimately a forgettable experience. Singularity was a much better game from Raven.
I've put about 2 hours into Shadows of the Damned this morning (up to Act 3), and damn it's exceeded almost all my expectations. My first doubt about the game was the controls, I knew the game would at least be entertaining, but I was worried it would have wonky Resi Evil like controls. But it handles perfectly. It takes a little time getting used to the shooting controls, because the camera isn't centered on the crosshair, but after a few minutes I was pulling off headshots with ease.

I'm really enjoying it so far, the banter between Garcia and Johnson is great, with very few corny lines (like the Internet one)so far, and it's a nice change of pace from all the overly serious games. And the game itself is just a lot of fun. Sure, it's one of the most linear games I've played (moreso than CoD, it's just tight corridor after tight corridor), the boss fights are of the 'shoot the red weak point' variety, and there's not a whole lot of enemy variety. But the game just gets the 'fun' part right, and I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe the atmosphere and tone, maybe just repeatedly stomping on a demon as delicious white gems start pouring out, or the interesting light/darkness mechanics (which I hope gets more challenging later). Sadly, it seems like it'll be a pretty short trip, but I can definitely see myself playing it again on Hard. I probably should've picked it from the start, as the game is an absolute breeze so far.

Oh, and fuck me the soundtrack is good. I've only played Shattered Memories, so I'm not all that familiar with Yamaoka's work, but I can certainly see now why Silent Hill's soundtracks get a lot of love.

Catherine just arrived this afternoon icon_biggrin.gif Was $74.95 from Game-lane, I didn't mind paying a little extra than ozgameshop as I had a coupon (not to mention the speedy arrival). And what a glorious colour manual! Over 50 pages (though half is in French).
Also picked up S10 of Family Guy

Can't wait to get stuck into it, but I'll finish Shadows of the Damned first.
Damn, was really hoping it'd be more single-player content when R* first announced there was more DLC coming. But hey, it's free, and the game is over 14 months old now (I don't think any kind of downloadable expansion would sell all that well after this much time)
My copy might arrive as early as tomorrow! I only just put my order through Game-lane last night (because their site said the 29th is when they're expecting stock), and it has already been shipped this morning. Because they're based in NSW, it usually takes just a day to arrive. ^_____^ Ironically, last night I had a dream (or nightmare) that I was stuck climbing a block puzzle icon_eek.gif Not cheating and wasn't being pursued by some twisted boss though icon_wink.gif

Worth playing it just for that. icon_lol.gif I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the game so much, it's easily one of my top 5 Wii games (as is the sequel).
Haha, she also heard them saying "I don't feel s**t", but I convinced her it's "I don't feel ashamed". Unless that is what they're saying icon_dumb.gif I'm not sure.

Honestly, I'm having so much fun with the game that if it weren't for the fact it's a port of a 3 year old game, I'd label it as a GotY contender.
Why'd they have to delay the PC version icon_annoyed.gif

I know this game has been getting alot of flak online, but I'm not ready to give up on it just yet. I really enjoyed the first 2 games, so a change to a modern-day setting won't be enough to dissuade me. I guess the PC version being delayed is a plus then, at least I can't make an impulse purchase and I can wait to see the reception it gets.
I'm now 12 hours into No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise, and am now making money for the Rank 1 fight, so not much longer to go. I'm surprised by the length of the game, I was expecting it to be under 10 hours, and I still might play more after the credits roll to try and get gold ranks on the sidemissions.

Speaking of which, I love the breaks between ranked fights. Back when the game out on the Wii, I had read many complaints about the open-world, but I don't mind it in the slightest. It's a welcome break after a 20-30 minute ranked fight, to go to each store and see what's new to purchase, then partake in some quick and fun distractions. I've never had to do more then 1-2 jobs/assassinations to make enough money for each rank (and that includes enough money to workout, upgrade weapons, rent videos, and even buy a few new clothes). Well, until now. The rank 1 fight requires $550,000 plus I need another $500,000 for the new beam katana, so I'll need to do some grinding now.

But obviously the boss battles are the real meat of the game, and I've not been disappointed yet (well, other than the 5th one where you don't get to fight). Every single one has a unique hook to always keep it fresh and entertaining. I'm really loving this game, the only issues I have with it is the shitty bike controls and invisible walls that surround it and other vehicles etc which has caused the bike to get stuck numerous times. Also, it's only noticable in the hub world, but goddamn it could use some anti-aliasing. I love the visual style and the colours really pop, but with the amount of lamp posts and road lines etc, it becomes a jaggy fest. Anyway, I'll definitely be buying NMH2 when I find a copy (and starting Shadows of the Damned soon). Also, this game has got my niece saying "MY SPLEEN!" constantly icon_lol.gif
Re: L.A. Noire (1 year ago)
I have to agree, I just finished Reefer Madness this morning and it was pretty disappointing. The first 3 DLC cases were great (despite the Nicholson case having a poor conclusion in my opinion), and really shouldn't have been cut as they had some nice foreshadowing. But Reefer Madness was short and forgettable.
Re: Gaming Bargains V2 (1 year ago)

Might be worth making a preorder or 2 now icon_cool.gif

Valkyria Chronicles 2 is also on sale for $14.99 here. I really should just finish this game off >__>.
Awesome! Thanks for that, been waiting for a reason to buy it, even though I'm still stuck in the first game icon_annoyed.gif
I picked these up in the last week

Now I can see what the fuss with Grasshopper Manufacture is all about (beyond the 20mins of Killer 7 I played like 5 years ago). Loving No More Heroes so far, ended up costing $20 at EB after trading in Resident Evil 5's CE (even the guy serving me was surprised RE was still fetching $60 trade value). Oh, and awesome manual by the way, a rarity to see a 30 page full colour manual, and I like the comic book design.

Shadows of the Damned was about $57 from ozgameshop. I wasn't even aware of the game until I saw the thread (and praise from Jarrod) on these forums. Watched a bit of Gamespots video review and was sold when a decapitated woman put her head back on and a talking skull said in a British accent "Well, that killed my stiffy" icon_lol.gif

Castlevania was ~$30 from Zavvi, been meaning to buy this for ages, not sure why it took me so long to finally bite.

The Blue transparent Dualshock 3 was only $40 from ozgameshop (awesome bargain they had for an hour a couple weeks back, it just doesn't come in official packaging), as was FEAR 3.
I started No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise this morning, and played for about 90 minutes. I always had an interest in it when it was first released on Wii, but never got around to buying it. Then when the demo went up on PSN a month ago, I thought I'd give it a shot and see if I was still interested. At first I thought it was pretty boring and repetitive playing with the Dualshock. The day after I thought I'd give it another try, this time with the Move, and all of a sudden it just clicked with me and I was having a ball. If there's one game where motion controls really elevate a games fun factor, this is it. Anyway, I've played up to the 9th ranked assassin fight, and so far so good, looking forward to playing more. Refreshing and fun, with style to boot, can't ask for much more.

Also, I've been putting alot of time into Fable 3 on PC. I've never really gotten into the series before. I'd started the 1st game numerous times on PC years ago, but only got past Hogwarts the one time, it never really hooked me, though this was around the time Oblivion came out. Overall, I'm quite enjoying it, and I'm not too sure why, especially in the wake of The Witcher 2. The combat is just far too simple, surely even for casuals, the story is boring and cliched, the minigames suck (fuck the dialogue constantly repeated in pie making drives me insane), visually it's unimpressive although there are some pretty nice views (such as Millfield), and I just don't feel compelled to partake in any of the 'life simulator' activities like conversing with NPCs, getting married etc.

But I'm still sinking at least 2 hours every night for the past week. Perhaps it's the economy system that has me addicted like in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. There's just something about buying all the shops and renting out houses in Albion, and watching the gold roll in to buy even more shit. There's also a certain charm to the game, particularly in some of the side missions (I liked the one where you're shrunk for a D&D style game) and dialogue (Is Reavers butler voiced by Jonathan Ross? Sounded like him). It's far from what I'd call a great game, it's just far too streamlined and flawed, but I'm enjoying it enough to finish it off.
I got a beta invite this morning, if anyone wants the code, first person to PM me can have it. I'm looking forward to this game, but would rather wait for the full release. icon_smile.gif
I just checked my account on JB's website, and it says my order has been paid, so it looks like I'll be getting the Hero Edition for $116.95 icon_biggrin.gif (Well, they would've had to sell it for that price anyway, even according to their T&C, but I was still kind of expecting them to email saying the price was a mistake or something)

Hopefully it arrives on Friday (it seems JB don't send your order until release day)

EDIT: SHIPPED!

Not to mention my PSP will have to sit near the router for like...2 hours for those. Damn you AUS why must you make a reward so difficult.
You can always download it on the PS3 to make it easier. Once you've "bought" the PSP games from your PSP, they appear in your download list on the PS3. (then just transfer it via USB to your PSP)

I ended up just getting Modnation and Dead Nation, I already own the rest of the available games. I may as well get Burnout too, I was only missing 2 trophies for the platinum, and now that I have a PS Eye, I'll be able to get it.

Probably a dumb question (I doubt you'll still be able to), but if I was to buy the Big Surf Island DLC for Burnout, will I still be able to play it once the PSN+ expires? I guess the $11 for 30 days won't be too bad though...

Wow, the PS3 versions are three times bigger than the 360 versions, interesting.
From the Digital Foundry comparion:

Direct comparison of the files between the 360 and PlayStation discs throws up some interesting factoids: elements such as the movies, generic audio and the motion capture data appear to be effectively identical between both systems, taking up the same amount of space. However, on the "cases" data for example, we see an enormous difference - the PS3 occupies a mammoth 14.3GB of data in one single file, while the 360 uses just 5.48GB spread across the three discs in a number of different files.

While there may be any number of explanations the most obvious would be that Team Bondi needed to do a lot more work to fit the 360 version onto three DVDs than we might have anticipated. Bearing in mind that game content is effectively identical, it suggests that the programmers had to implement a computationally more expensive compression scheme on Xbox 360 to make the game fit - and on-the-fly decompression of these assets may have performance implications.

Well, don't know if you did anything special or were just lucky, but definitely doesn't come up free for me...
Hmm, guess I was lucky then. I just tested it out, and the cases and outfits all work perfectly. Seems strange, maybe it was a mistake and Sony fixed it.
Re: L.A. Noire (1 year ago)
I was going to buy the Rockstar VIP Pass, but if you do a manual search on the PSN Store for all the pre-order DLC separately, they're free! I'm not sure if it's a mistake or not, but I've just downloaded Slip of the Tongue, Naked City, Badge Pursuit, Broderick Suit, and Sharpshooter Suit. icon_biggrin.gif icon_cool.gif

I'll just buy the 2 upcoming cases when they come out, I'm sure they'll cost less than the $15 for the pass.

PS: Naked City is about 1.2GB, Slip of the Tongue is 687MB, the rest are just 200KB unlock keys.
