Re: PoPoLoCrois Review (3 years ago)
Glad to see palgn has a review for this game =).

A friend bought this for me on his return from a trip overseas. Being a large anime fan, the unique art style somewhat turned me off, and i didn't bother to pick it up. On the odd chance I happened to pick it up for kicks, i couldn't put it down. Such an intriguing storyline, bright characters, and peppy interaction, it's damn well addictive.

But Jeremy did a fair review on the game, kudos to him. A nice tactical-ish battle system, craploads of money, and constant switches between characters as the story progresses.
Just like to emphasize anyone interested in the game, it is very easy for any RPG lovers. But you'll be entranced by the good old-school fun and funny interactions between characters.

Perhaps one thing missing in the review (which I didn't discover until very late in the game), is there is a nostalgic set of collectible items you are able to purchase at various locations around the world. These items are then displayed in the attic beside Pietro's room (i never found this until the very end O_O). It was more accessible in the original version I think.

But a fair review. Game is highly recommended for nostalgic fun and a bit of a laugh. If you play games for their hardcore value and sense of self-achievement, don't touch this.
Re: Your newest purchase (3 years ago)
return here for a lurk and see everyone's still chirpy as always ^^.
whew, up to 819 pages. keep stimulating the economy guys, doing great =).

in other new purchases:
- kaleido star box set: $9.10 (don't know how it got that cheap O_O)
- wall-e plushie: $7.40 (felt nostalgic)

^ how many episodes are in the flcl box set? I saw disk 1, but never could find the rest. icon_sad.gif
haha, generally on a madman dvd there's usually about 4 eps a disk, 5 if you're lucky, 3 if you're not.

flcl - 3 disks, 2 episodes each, 6 episodes total O_o
although it's made by the studio who did evangelion, and has some essence of azumanga daioh in it, so i'm really enjoying it so far (only done the first disk ^^").
-----
more purchases:
cosplay prep
train - wig $65, styrofoam balls $4
shinji - lycra bodysuit $40
this is starting to look expensive....
Re: Your newest purchase (4 years ago)
hahaha, jb hifi is having a sale.... ^^"
FLCL box set - $30

Muse - HAARP Live at Wembley - $10

Muse - Hullabaloo DVD - $13

When all the food runs out and we resort to cannabalism, the first ones we eat are the businessmen. By this stage, they're trying to sell each other as meat products, but they were good for nothing in the first place.
Re: Your newest purchase (4 years ago)
geez i've become a lurker these days on the forums ^^".
Black Cat v.16 - $13.95
negima v.19 - $18.95

negima on the other hand, god knows when it'll finish xD
day at uni where everything was warm fuzzies:
- wake up for driving lesson with mother dear. have good time swearing and cursing retarded drivers on the road (even though i'm only a learner atm xD)
- get to uni where bus fare costs me 96c =D
- have good laugh in chinese class about everything chinese and everything thats not (nothing R rated, mind you =p)
- try a cheap 'ecobug' pie called 'ratatouille.' surprisingly the best (only) vegetarian pie i've ever eaten
- during break, fall asleep in sun for 1.5 hours on the lawn with free hot water from 'ecobug' (i rejected the offer of 'tea')
- actually understood what the hell was going on in accounting lecture xD
- no anime/manga club meeting in arvo, only me and another girl turned up xD. found some other good friends along with her and had a good laugh for an hour
- got a seat on the peak-hour bus trip =P
- old crush of mine started texting me cause she for some reason got free texts to optus mobiles. woohoo for me anyway xD

only cold fuzzies was optus network was down for nearly all of today for me. hard contacting anyone =\

I think David Tenant is doing a pretty good job... =)

Big Pete, buy this one for me too xD
experiences:
tea:
black - good when good. tastes like bad maltesers when you get to the concentrated dregs at the bottom
white - weak. not worth drinking. like too much flour in a cake - bland and tasteless.
green - nice. add a pinch of lemon and a hint of sugar to get the powerpuff tea...oh wait, makes it sweeter.
lemon iced - awesome. better than fairy floss dissolved in red cordial. great sugar hit. the tea more dentists prefer xD

coffee:
only ever bought one coffee. at schoolies, mind you.
cappucino (right spelling?) - free. dude forgot to charge us xD.
probably good he didn't as well. had that coffee hint to it, tasted like hot dishwater XP (no, i drrank alcopops AFTER the coffee).
coffee recommendations welcome.

rarrrrrrrrr! into debating, i'd like to point out some flaws in my opponent's case before summarising.

Passa wrote
The topic specifically refers to the benefit to gamers. These people are already playing games and therefore any benefits from the console war are just that, benefits. This instantly makes any argument that the console war causes obesity, gaming addiction or leprosy irrelevant.
If benefits from the console war are just benefits, you could say the same thing for things that are not benefits - they're not beneficial. The console war influences gamers alike already playing, that means anyone already obese, addicted or with leprosy. Er, i did say it would encourage them to play more games, not make them obese or get cancer.

Also,
Passa wrote
It is more likely they will spend less assuming their purchasing habits will remain the same. Even if their quantity of game related purchases was to increase, it is unlikely to cost more than if there was no console war, since prices are pushed down so far because of the competition.
Cheap prices, more games. More games, more gameplay for gamers. More gameplay for gamers --> back to negative influences. Could probably say because of the console war and its competition with prices, gamers are encouraged to play more games. Sure, benefit the fun of the games, reap the benefits of the lonely gamer in a cupboard.

One more thing...
Passa wrote
Competition between console manufacturers and game developers creates better gaming hardware and software, boosting gamer enjoyment, and this is simply an undeniable primary benefit to gamers.
Years ago there were many more successful game developers around too. The console war caused many top staff to leave and perhaps companies themselves to collapse after the heat of the console war. Donkey Kong Country creators Rareware were on top of the world at one stage, you hardly hear from them now. Same thing could be said for Sega. While their legacy lives on in Sonic, the company is silent due to the power of the game giants today. What happens to the games these guys create for the gamers? awwww, have to settle for another mario game instead of the innovative stuff other guys could make. sorry, gamers.

don't forget,
Passa wrote
Beyond the cost saving measures, three consoles instead of one allows for each to cater for different audiences. Different exclusive games and services means consumers can pick a console that suits their play-style. The Wii does not cater for all gamers, while neither does the 360 or PS3. Without the console war, not all gamers would be accounted for meaning they will enjoy their gaming time less, and if you want to go as far out as you have, you could say this results in a drop in the quality of life for these people.
Unfortunately, not every gamer is financially well-off to afford every console (the hardcore gamer prolly hasn't left home yet... ^^"). Generally, each game is an experience in itself. And because of the exclusive particular-console-only titles, how does it benefit gamers when they can't access every title? Sure, you could wait for the effects of competition to kick in for a price drop, but new titles with greater experiences would no doubt be released by then.
Fantasy Cube 3700x would definitely prime over wii, 360 and ps3. That is, wouldn't one console be better than three? Compatible with all, harbouring every game title, controller, then every gamer could be in touch with technology of "yeaaaaaaaaahhhhhh" xD!!! Sure, perhaps the console war allows for more ideas to be brought in. But Fantasy Cube 3700x? A gamer's match made in heaven. Makes 'em all happy anyway xD. [pre-order yours today!]

While the console war creates space for new ideas and competitive pricing, it also influences gamers to buy more (quantitative/qualitatively), play more, and do less. really. More choice, more hassle for gamers to experience it all. War is bad. Nothing else to it.
TIME EXTENSION!
...
just had to say that =P
okay, round 2!
-------------
back to the debating scene, and we continue or arduous campaign on the battle over whether the console war benefits gamer or not =). as the negative side, i continue my case arguing why the console war does not benefit gamers. I believe that the console war instead has (a) negative influence/negative effects on the gamers themselves, proving to be more of a hindrance than beneficial in the long run. In my first argument, I pointed out the monetary/social costs of the console war to the gamer, and will further my argument by exploring the impact of the console war physically and emotionally on the gamer. Before i continue however, i'd like to correct some errors in my opponent's case.

Firstly,
Passa wrote
I feel my opponent has missed the direction of the debate topic. We are discussing the benefits and disadvantages of the console war to gamers, not the benefits and disadvantages of playing videogames.
"benefits and disadvantages of the console war to the gamer." as the negative side, i believe that the 'disadvantages' of the console war are any negative influences to the gamer the console war may create - that is, the opposite feature of 'benefits.' I previously defined 'benefits' as:
mangaman wrote
I would also like to define "benefit." In this context, it means the gamer 'ending up on top' not only from a monetary perspective, but also from a physical, social, and emotional view.
The console war basically encourages gamers to buy more and more games due to price drops and bundles created by competition. How does this 'not benefit'/'disadvantage' gamers? That's what i'm discussing.

Also,
Passa wrote
Xbox featured a basic iteration of the Xbox Live Arcade ...been emulated by the Wii with Wiiware and the Virtual Console while the PS3 has the PSN, providing similar downloadable games and content. These services are only a benefit to the gamer...not have felt the need to create these services.
Each company here emulates the other company's product to match in terms of online compatibility. Benefit for gamers to play each other online? yes-yes. Benefit for gamers socially and physically? no-no. While the evolving consoles benefit gamers in terms of convenience for multiplayer gaming, it also potentially makes the need for social game meetups obsolete. "Services are only a benefit to the gamer, otherwise Nintendo and Sony would not have felt the need to create these services." If online play and downloadable content is the 'benefit' of future gaming, the social lives of gamers are gonna take a hit.

The console war shows negative influences not only socially and by monetary value, but also emotionally and physically to a gamer on their own. Carry on from my last argument, with all the games one has bought for a BARGAIN price, you sit down to play, awesome. A gamer gamer sits to play, 4-6 hour sessions at times, perhaps even more. Stop to play. What can I do now? ... Back to ps3.
Unattended, gaming can become an addiction, just like smoking. It is classified as a 'modern-day psychological disorder' (cbsnews, 2006), and encouraged by game companies and media, it spreads to nearly every kid today. The console war encourages companies to make bigger and better game consoles and games.
To get ahead in the console war, what can a company do? Differentiation is definitely the key. Parents want games that encourage their kids to be more active, especially in the time of 'the obesity crisis.' No doubt, the console war encourages more gaming, so the wii tries making 'active games.' Try as they might, the bottom line is still that games encourage close to no beneficial attributes for a gamer whatsoever. Encourage gaming - encourage nothing good.

forums. the best place to vent your anger upon multiple people at once about a particular topic. a place where one can be a smart arse to others without having to show his face around town (let just hope they ain't stuck in their closet playing wow and eating maccas every 12 hours.). vent vent vent, bitch bitch bitch. thats forums. +1 point.

forums. a place where you can create a whole new 'you' online. personalise your hairstyles with avatars, create clothes with signatures, personalie character traits with 'tell us a bit about yourself'. disappear and return later undercover as a new user, the magical disappearing act. kill your rep, start a new 'character.' +1 point.

take sides, discuss opinions, yell at each other with !!!!!!!!#!#%!#$!*&$!!!!!!'s and f*********************ck!!!!!'s to save your voicebox for games requiring ventrilo. have the last say by undertaking 'ban' and 'kicked' action from higher powers. +1 point.

palgn is like another community. just online. remember school days (for those who have finished school)? you have your group you hang out with, the jerks, jeeks, jocks, jolly'uns, jemos, it wouldn't be a community without em all. so +1 more point for community.

rant rant rant, another thing about posts. dunno where they lead, what you're venting on about by the end, and if anyone will bother to read it all. /rant.

There's always two sides to a war. One: a basic reason to fight, what any side hopes to gain/can potentially lose from the war. and Two: the unseen side-effects that were overlooked in the overall planning, and mean little to the big guns of the war. In short, war is bad. So how is this relevant to the contemporary console war experienced today? icon_eek.gif

heyo all and welcome to the season finale to the palgn debating series. as you're all aware, the topic for this debate is that "the console war benefits gamers." I agree with my opponent's definition of the console war being the competition between game company overlords to have the best selling console icon_biggrin.gif . I would also like to define "benefit." In this context, it means the gamer 'ending up on top' not only from a monetary perspective, but also from a physical, social, and emotional view. This is the sole argument i will be discussing in this debate: the console war creates negative side-effects for the gamer/consumer icon_mad.gif . Splitting it up, i will firstly review the monetary/social effects, and secondly explore the potential negative physical/emotional influences the console war creates for the gamer. But before I delve into my arguments, i would firstly like to point out a flaw in my opponent's case.

icon_arrow.gif My opponent stated that:
Passa wrote
This is because console manufacturers will often sell their consoles at a loss, hoping to make money back on game sales. This is only done because they must match their competitors price at all costs if they want to remain a player for that generation.
Here, it is said that console manufacturers sell to survive in the industry. When really, game companies survive by selling their products to consumers. At whatever price, game companies have generally been known to profit and end up on top of whatever sales pitch they used. What happened to the gamer who spent a weeks pay on that console, will he overall 'benefit' as well? Perhaps. He's morely been hit by the side effects of the console war, and means little to the game companies. icon_exclaim.gif

In the console war, side one: companies hope to make a profit/they can potentially lose revenue from opposing companies. that's the basis of the console war. side two: unseen side-effects from this war on gamers include potential traumatic monetary losses and social miss icon_eek.gif . So how does this console war really affect gamers money-wise and social-wise? As you'd all know, any modern consoles today aren't cheap. Unless you're Kevin Rudd or better, it'd take a good full-on week of work at Coles or something to afford your spankin' new console (i haven't blown a weeks pay on any new console. yet.). This leaves that week closed for social occasions icon_cry.gif . "hey sweetie, lets catch a movie tonight." "sorry dear, i'm broke, lets try next week." Socially, it may also leave next week closed too. "hey man, lets grab a drink later tonight". "lets try another time man, i'm about to unlock this new character in this game i got. it's too good to miss!" I know its generally not that bad, but you know the hype feeling of a new console/game, it tends to make social nerve 101 turn to liquid jelly for a while icon_wall.gif .
Console war - benefit to gamer: cheaper games. Console war - side-effect to gamer: spending money/cost-of-living money decreased 500 points or so; social-ness bears increased potential faults. Down prices, up sales. Up sales, increase economic growth, increase infaltion and interest rates. Hitting 'em all like dominoes - not too much of a benefit for the gamer anymore. icon_confused.gif
well guess i can wait for passa now that he knows its on ^^".
i'm cool with extension time.
mangaman report on gencon
friday night:
out to city with friends (inc. Big Pete), ate at pancake house, watched kung-fu panda (unwillingly) which was not as bad as expected, slept over at Big Pete's house, played brawl. good fun.
Saturday:
awoke, made breakfast and jump into 'kyon' outfit, take some shots, drive to gencon, massive queue went down quickly. look through the few stalls there just under an hour, featured many board games, warhammer, trading card games, magazines, and small amounts of anime/video games. gametraders and australian gamer had the only vieo game stalls there, freeplay on snes/sega and GT had N64/xbox360/ps3/brawl going on. other than that, small arcade, smaller cosplay competition, life-size jenga =D (bricks the size of xboxs -> pictures coming soon), $45 jedi training (which was kinda lame.) and the usual overpriced food. Big Pete and I got asked to help trial some new upcoming card game, only to waste 30 minutes discovering how lame it was. only ended up buying the Orphen box set for $75, then back to Big Pete's place for the night, playing some TF2 and brawl once again.
Sunday:
up again, load Big Pete's brother's pc into the car and off to gencon again. unfortunately, this was minimal pc gaming on sunday, so it was kind wasted =(. build giant tower out of jenga blocks, watch some bad karaoke setup, LordInu comes along in cosplay with his girlfriend. They go off to play metroid, i wander over to cosplay comp to watch and talk with others there. afterwards, spent a good hour or so getting together a group for karaoke. walk to city in cosplay, big karaoke group, then catch train together as group before i eventually end up and LordInu's place for the night.
--------------
High-lights:
1 - good 'ol mario kart for play at aus.gamer
2 - life size jenga = win
3 - karaoke with large group = WINNNN =D
4 - was playing brawl with some randoms as yoshi, get the smash ball, find it difficult to use 'dragon fire' (haven't played brawl much...).
Some guy i'm playing against goes, "man, you fail at dragon fire" >icon_sad.gif
I go, "man, you fail at life" XD.
"ooooo snap" goes the crowd started by Big Pete =D

Low-lights:
1 - minimal video gaming available
2 - number of activities/stalls kinda limited
3 - lowish crowd attendance, down experience
4 - lame, annoying emcees
yeah, sorry, been waiting for passa to post since he's affirmative. should i keep waiting or just post me posts by now (big big shame if this finals debate was won by forfeit.)
uh-oh. been finishing this darn cosplay all week, what time is it due by tomorrow? ^^"
wait wait woah! it's tuesday today, and its due friday?? O_O
oh geez, i forgot...
After recent outings last weekend, just remembered Gencon will be on in Brisbane at the Convention/Exhibition Centre from Thursday-Sunday. Four huge days of card games, table top games, video games and various other cool things. I think this is the first one in Australia, so i'm not sure how it'll be.

I'll be going on the saturday and sunday of the convention, hoping to finish my cosplay by then. Just hit me to dress up again like last week, so i'm sorta full panicking trying to get everything together.
Just wondering if I may see any other palgn-ers there? =D
Hey, you made it Aftershock m'man. One debate is better than none! Woohoo, I got arguments to use this time instead of plain rebuttal =D! ah well, on with debating.
----------
Back to the second round of debating. As the affirmative side, I previously discussed the innovative effects indie games have on future gaming in my previous argument. Here, I will further develop my stance on why Indie games are in fact very important to the gaming industry, by exploring how they provide consumers with a wider variety of games and competition to the market, to support the needs of the gaming industry. But before I jump into my next argument, I would just like to point out some flaws in my opponents case.

My opponent stated that, "...large number of gamers who do not play indie games, and even more who don't know they exist."
Perhaps gamers aren't aware of the existence of individual indie titles, but when browsing through games on a shelf in a game store, they're definitely there to be aware of. Any other game that one isn't aware of, not Mario, not Sonic, something different from the norm, you'd be intrigued to pick it up and see what its about. It would be better to say that, even though Indie games are not the driving the force behind the majority of game sales today, they do provide the gaming consumer with the additional benefit of being able to choose from a wider range of games from just franchised titles.

This brings me to my second argument: that indie games provide the gaming market with an increased variety and range of games as well as dilute the market power of the dominant gaming corporations. Anyone would know that in any industry, competition plays an important role in helping businesses thrive. Without it, consumers have a limited range of products to choose from, very marginal price differences, and no incentive to buy just the one particular product. With added competition, businesses are forced to try harder to capture consumer attention with better product and price offerings to the competitors. In turn, this results in better overall product quality, competitive pricing being readily available, and a wider range of products for the consumer to choose from. Competition, is what Indie games provide to the gaming industry.
With this added competition, gaming giants have to try harder to produce games other than another mario party sequel, or sonic racing game. After all, better quality games for gamers like us can't really be a bad thing can it =)?

okey, your turn A'Shock.
Re: Caption This! (4 years ago)
Primary Objective: Grab and Move? When Careerone said "mover wanted" i didn't expect this...
I went looking for the "submit a game review yourself" board, but it had disappeared (i'm a bit slow in forum updates ^^"). I'm guessing this is probably because of its inactivity on the palgn site.

So it got me thinking: would you submit a review about a movie/book/concert/anime/manga etc etc instead of a game?

Cause i know a lot of new release games are already covered by writers and mods, so it left other palgners little to review but cite another opinion towards a game. With an expanded array/database of reviews stashed in palgn on games/entertainment, would it palgn perhaps become more attractive?
------------------
Just an idea, i've never had the opportunity to review a game since its not my field of specific knowledge ^^".
mangaman's opinion on what gaming achievements are nowadays:
1 - finishing a game on the hardy-hard mode
2 - winning a game against your friend where you're less experienced than they are
3 - not buying a game when walking through shops/not picking up a a game controller in your spare time
----
woo! i've done all three! =D let's do it again!
-------
i don't really see 100% completion necessary to feel a sense of awe and happiness. woo, you're one of the few 1200000 in the world who can do that. bravo.
really, there's better ways to spend time nowadays than trolling through every inch of a game for hours and hours to hit a nice score.
