With several screenshots and a 2008 Consumer Electronics Show trailer to prove it, the expected negative side of this unexpected news rears its ugly Rancor-like head via press release. As was the case with the multi-platform releases of Soulcalibur II, the Star Wars characters will each see a console exclusive home, with the PlayStation 3 version featuring only Darth Vader (because the PS3 is black, duh!), while the Xbox 360 version has Yoda to call its own (because the Xbox logo is green, duh!). Therefore, those hoping to have gone one-on-one with the two in the same arena will have to hope Namco Bandai and/or Lucasarts sees the light of downloadable content down the line.
However, not all is lost. The most interesting bit of information in 1UP's news story is speculation that, while the Dark Lord of the Sith and the aging Grand Master of the Jedi Order are (more or less) both confirmed to be included as secret characters in Soulcalibur IV's roster, they might not be the only examples of Star Wars cast to make the weird-looking cross-over.
Of course, this isn't the first time that Star Wars has delved into fighting game territory. As will no doubt be duly noted in each and every news post across the Internet detailing this Soulcalibur IV development, the legendary (in awfulness) 1997 PlayStation title, Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi holds that unique honour--least of which being the first game ever to pit an assuredly deadly lightsaber-wielding Luke Skywalker against a Tusken Raider in absurdly even-handed combat. Hopefully, the inclusion of Star Wars characters in Soulcalibur IV is a blessing, and not a retroactive lineage curse, when it's released for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 later this year.
