Soulcalibur IV to feature Darth Vader, Yoda

PS3 News | More like Soulightsabur.
In what's sure to agitate the pedantic expanded universe fans out there, the timeless Star Wars characters Darth Vader and Yoda will be going head-to-head against Mitsurugi and co in Namco Bandai's upcoming fighting game sequel, Soulcalibur IV, 1UP exclusively reveals.

With several screenshots and a 2008 Consumer Electronics Show trailer to prove it, the expected negative side of this unexpected news rears its ugly Rancor-like head via press release. As was the case with the multi-platform releases of Soulcalibur II, the Star Wars characters will each see a console exclusive home, with the PlayStation 3 version featuring only Darth Vader (because the PS3 is black, duh!), while the Xbox 360 version has Yoda to call its own (because the Xbox logo is green, duh!). Therefore, those hoping to have gone one-on-one with the two in the same arena will have to hope Namco Bandai and/or Lucasarts sees the light of downloadable content down the line.

However, not all is lost. The most interesting bit of information in 1UP's news story is speculation that, while the Dark Lord of the Sith and the aging Grand Master of the Jedi Order are (more or less) both confirmed to be included as secret characters in Soulcalibur IV's roster, they might not be the only examples of Star Wars cast to make the weird-looking cross-over.

Of course, this isn't the first time that Star Wars has delved into fighting game territory. As will no doubt be duly noted in each and every news post across the Internet detailing this Soulcalibur IV development, the legendary (in awfulness) 1997 PlayStation title, Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi holds that unique honour--least of which being the first game ever to pit an assuredly deadly lightsaber-wielding Luke Skywalker against a Tusken Raider in absurdly even-handed combat. Hopefully, the inclusion of Star Wars characters in Soulcalibur IV is a blessing, and not a retroactive lineage curse, when it's released for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 later this year.

This feels like a cheap cash in to me..

I'd rather prefer Link and Dante instead of the Star Wars duo.

Note: PS3 gets Vader
360 gets Yoda.

Really? Are we all honestly going to complain about some bonus characters which in all honesty will be a fun novelty and will in no way affect the quality of the game?

It's just a bit of harmless fun for the Star Wars geek, in my opinion, but most people who love fighting games/Soulcalibur were going to get the game anyway.

Eh just seems like they throw one character in one game, another in another to try and get 2 purchases for what is essentially the one game.

They did it with Soul Calibur 2, I wouldn't say it's in any way to the game's detriment.

Hey, it worked for Soul Calibur II. Of course then they arsed everything up by releasing Soul Calibur III solely on the PS2 when the GC version sold leaps and bounds ahead of it.

i'm with luke on this, that is a pissweak thing to do, they should be both in both versions, maybe throw in a jawa on the wii.

No where in the original 1Up article does it say any character is exclusive to one platform. Where are people getting that information from?

Anyway, as cool as this is, I preferred link. Being a fantasy character he fitted into the universe. Oh well, this is no wierder than seeing Master Chief's sister turn up in DOA.

Are you kidding, if the Wii got this game they'd probably throw in Link AND Ganondorf and as a result the World would implode from the rabid fanboyism created over the title. It would sell 10 times as much as the other versions and then the Wii would get shafted with the next title.

Yeah, I take your point - but honestly, you're the worst kind of weirdo if you're prepared to buy two copies of the same game just so you can play as a novelty character! I mean, I may RENT the other version just to SEE Yoda, lol, but not buy icon_razz.gif

The fact remains that if there was no Star Wars bonus crap then I would still be buying SC4.

It also says it in the official press release. icon_sad.gif Hoperfully they put the other as download content. I'll be getting the 360 version since that's what I own, but I would have much rather had Vader.

Haven't Nintendo been doing this for ten years (Pokemon and Nintendogs)?

^ Yea but it was something like 5 for Nintendogs icon_razz.gif
Anyway there's no point in complaining, I'm actually happy that they'll be in it, and happier that 360 gets Yoda! yay! icon_dance.gif

You can eventually unlock all the dog breeds in Nintendogs (I think). The starter ones are just different, although I think there are a few exclusive items in each via the sort of Mario Kart toy.

I love the idea. If they are balanced and well integrated like SC2 then I think it's fantastic and gives the game more appeal. It's certainly upped my excitment for the game (but I was always buying this anyway)

The yoda character will be interesting as he is so small. I think there may be a similar character in the game as well not revealed yet.

Soul Calibur home of random out of place characters now? Happened in Soul Calibur 2, and now again in 4, but this time it's Star Wars?! At least Link sort of matched with a sword and shield..

Though, it would be cool to play as Vader/Yoda anyway, seems a bit odd why the characters are exclusive to different platforms, with Link in Soul Calibur 2, obviously it could only happen on Nintendo, but these are Star Wars, why not have both! It will be **** if you have to "pay" for the other character <_< ..

Oh yeah, and Soul Calibur Legends for Wii features Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia (another Namco property so its not as random), so this sort of thing not only happened in SC2, but also Legends.

I'm starting to agree with what someone said on another forum. Why not create a stand-alone star wars fighter using the SCIV engine? Surely there'd be enough characters with all the Prequel Jedi and Sith.

that would be sweet, but Han didn't use a melee weapon icon_sad.gif

Pfft, Han would have his gun and just shoot the other guy before he could draw.

ahh, but tried that on Mr Vader (whose hand apparently moves faster than light), didn't work so well.

Well, you wouldn't have Han, only Jedi or Sith, or anyone else who picks up a saber.
