Depicting two extreme close up shots of an unnamed female character's upper facial features, the images (here and here) show off the amount of detail and, dare we say, emotions Quantic Dream will be able to instil in Heavy Rain's cast and narrative.
Indeed, as Quantic Dreams CEO and Heavy Rain Director, David Cage, stated in an interview yet to be fully disclosed by TVG, "Today, everything is visual, so yes, the hardware helps a lot to reach the visual quality that becomes necessary."
"Virtual actors, especially, are for me the most important part. I see them as the vectors of emotion; I need them to be as believable as possible in their acting performance and emotional response. Quantic Dream has massively invested over the past ten years in this aspect by acquiring a Motion Capture system internally and working very hard on facial animation and advanced rendering systems in particular."
Announced way back when the Electronics Entertainment Expo was still relevant (that'd be E3 2006, for those playing at home), with an impressive character-driven real-time prototype video revealed soon after, Heavy Rain has held somewhat of a unknown hit status for the PS3--with nary a release date uttered. Coming from Quantic Dreams, the same studios behind the cult classics Omikron: The Nomad Soul and Fahrenheit (aka Indigo Prophecy in the US and Canada), the least we can expect from Heavy Rain is an intriguing design in interactive storytelling--"a very dark film noir thriller with mature themes", apparently, according to Cage--upon its release. Whenever that'll be.
