The basic premise for Pain is rather simple, you get to choose a character (it appears there will be several unlockable characters, such as a mime) and then choose a location to cause pain. The level then loads and you take control of this character while the character is sitting in a sling shot ready to be flung at the obstacles. You basically start off on the ground in this giant slingshot and have to use the analog stick to try and move your character around in the slingshot. When you’re ready you ‘launch’ your player with the X button and away he goes.
There is plenty to hit in Pain such as an old lady crossing the street or a glass window. Points are awarded based on what objects you hit and the ragdoll physics ensure that your character flies around like any out of control body. There isn’t really all that much depth to Pain though, which would be our main concern. While it is quite enjoyable setting your character up and then catapulting them into a building, the game feels like a bit of a shallow experience, but with such a simple concept we cannot imagine how the game could get complex.
There is no doubt that Pain is going to provide gamers with quite a bit of silly, harmless fun. However, for a game that is so incredibly shallow our recommendation on whether gamers should purchase Pain is really going to be up to the price. At a low price point Pain looks like it will be good, silly fun that should provide a few laughs, but with a high pricepoint it is ultimately Sony who are having a laugh.
