eGames 07: Pain Preview

PS3 Feature | Here comes the pain.
Pain was first revealed a few months ago, the game is set for release on the PlayStation Network next month and at the recent eGames and Entertainment Expo we recently had an opportunity to go hands on with the game and even though Pain isn’t what one would call a deep game, it seems like it will be quite a bit of fun.. as long as it is available at the right price.

The basic premise for Pain is rather simple, you get to choose a character (it appears there will be several unlockable characters, such as a mime) and then choose a location to cause pain. The level then loads and you take control of this character while the character is sitting in a sling shot ready to be flung at the obstacles. You basically start off on the ground in this giant slingshot and have to use the analog stick to try and move your character around in the slingshot. When you’re ready you ‘launch’ your player with the X button and away he goes.

We wonder how many points you get for hitting this guy?

There is plenty to hit in Pain such as an old lady crossing the street or a glass window. Points are awarded based on what objects you hit and the ragdoll physics ensure that your character flies around like any out of control body. There isn’t really all that much depth to Pain though, which would be our main concern. While it is quite enjoyable setting your character up and then catapulting them into a building, the game feels like a bit of a shallow experience, but with such a simple concept we cannot imagine how the game could get complex.

There is no doubt that Pain is going to provide gamers with quite a bit of silly, harmless fun. However, for a game that is so incredibly shallow our recommendation on whether gamers should purchase Pain is really going to be up to the price. At a low price point Pain looks like it will be good, silly fun that should provide a few laughs, but with a high pricepoint it is ultimately Sony who are having a laugh.

Ill probably buy it for some pick-up-and-play fun.

I'd have played it but sony the bright sparks had their PS3s in BOXES!

If only sony marketing employees had the time to read their own manuals they would have realised that keeping a PS3 in a confined space was stupid.

I guess the Playstation network is like Live, so it'd be priced like a XBLA title... I guess, I have no PS3. Reminds me of the Flatout driver toss... or something found in Garry's mod. It damn should be cheap!

The funny thing is that it is the only machine that is having problems and it's not because of heating since the systems buttons still respond and they are software controlled. Basically when the game is freezing up it is actually just Pain crashing. I'm guessing it's an E3 build that wasn't debugged very well.

AS for the game, the environments are a little plain for what they need and it feels like the game is running in slow motion, fix those two functions and it could be decent.

I agree jabjabs, with a few improvements the game could be fairly good. With the right price point, I see it being a great addition to the library of PSN titles in future, it's quite fun (at least for a while).

Actually, the Lair console was crashing a bit, too. It was the only way I was able to seize a turn on any of the games in the Ubi trailer.

indeed, they had to open the boxes up because of the overheating - it was a very stupid idea on Sony's marketing department's part. You could feel the heat coming out of the boxes when they opened them.

I think all in all sony didn't think out their stand very well, it was too cramped and smelt like sweaty teenager. not impressed.

Hopefully today there won't be as many people trying to cram themselves into the container.

The idea of flinging a mime around and smashing him into things sounds like reason enough to buy it lol.
