PS3 to feature downloadable video and music

PS3 News | Microsoft may have some competition...
In another attempt to make the PlayStation 3 the centre of entertainment in the household, Sony has revealed to the Financial Times that they wish to offer downloadable entertainment including films and TV shows on the PlayStation Network, which would directly compete with Microsoft's Xbox Live Marketplace.

“We are building a software infrastructure to distribute video and music, more particularly video, through the PlayStation Network,” said Sir Howard Stringer, Sony chief executive, during an interview in Moscow. “That is a Japanese and American combined effort to build a platform around a common software architecture to distribute video via the PlayStation network into the PSP and beyond.”

“We are trying to get our devices to talk to each other efficiently. PlayStation Network should migrate from gadget to gadget. But initially it starts with PlayStation devices and then to TV and beyond. That’s the goal,” says Stringer.

No official release period was given for the new service, but he stated: “We won't know how effective it will be until early next year.”

That's all well and good, but given the lack of film and TV content that we have received from Microsoft due to copyright issues (among others), the future of this new PS3 service in Australia is unknown at this point. Hopefully we don't get left out in the cold for too long.

This could be good if Sony threw in all their movies and music they have the rights over, that and if possible I wouldn't mind having the ability to obtain shows/music from other countries such as Japan/USA from the AUS store.

But then it will come down to price, I personally hope that they try to get a decent pricing structure up.

About friggin time. My god Sony is being slow with its network and its features, XBL kicks the crap out of it.

This will be a great move by Sony. I like the idea of TV content being downloadable-Your moving up Sony.

PSN content and features is one tidbit about the PS3 that is difficult to put a finger on- there just doesn't seem to be so much information on what is offered presently (or maybe an indication of not much being offered?).

Trying to research comparisons between the two is pretty fruitless...so it's always good to hear when they're adding new stuff, and a decent range of downloadable movies or vidcasts will definitely be a bonus.

That's all a matter of personal preference.I very rarely watch tv or movies, so not having/having these features pretty much means nothing to me.Online games on PS3 run great and that's what I mostly care about. So for me, other than not being able to access the XMB ingame or listen to your own music ingame, PSN is fine by me.

This would mean something, if Microsoft pushed Video content to the rest of the world. But they havent.
