GTA IV to have 16 players online?

PS3 News | That's what Rockstar is aiming for, apparently.
GamerNode has reported some new information about Grand Theft Auto IV, after Rockstar discussed some new possible features of the game at the PlayStation Holiday Preview Event held in Toronto recently.

The developer has been testing various plots and have even considered having the entire world unlocked at the beginning of the game. This would be a big change from previous versions of GTA, where players have to unlock new areas as they progress through the game.

The big thing they mentioned however, is that Rockstar is aiming for the multiplayer component of the game to feature up to 16 players online and able to battle it out in various multiplayer modes.

The possibility of a robust online multiplayer mode to accompany what will surely be a huge single-player mode could definitely add to what will surely be one of the biggest games of this generation. Keep in mind, the multiplayer hasn't been officially confirmed since the event, but it's very interesting anyway. We'll report with more information as it becomes available.

I've always kind of assumed that GTAIV would come with some form of multiplayer or another, Rockstar would be mad not to provide it. Saints Row and Crackdown have each gone a small way towards showing what kind of MP a 'sandbox' game could have - GTAIV needs to take it one step further and show us all how it should be done.

I can't wait to see what it will be. No doubt it will be much much more than run and gun DM style play. Hopefully something completely unexpected.

yea. it'll be very interesting what they'll come up with in the multiplayer mode. maybe somethin along the lines of turf wars where gangs go and shoot each other up for territory?

At the end of the day this is not bad, but we need to be able to play in each other's cities ala Crackdown.

Still, better than nothing if its Saint's Row deathmatch styles.

I'm thinking they might take the same road as they did with the PSP version's and how it had Multiplayer. Though, It would be extra cool if they had co-op storylines.

That sounds awesome, juts like Zones in Warhawk (which happens to be my favourite mode).

It would rule if that was a mode in mp.

God I hope it has Crackdown style co-op.

Whoa, 16 players in a open world environment. That screams potential.

My very first online multiplayer experience came from the original top down GTA (running over a 56k modem connection no less). I believe the two modes of play were deathmatch and cannonball (i.e. checkpoint race). It was insanely fun, especially cannonball. It would usually devolve into me or my mate trying to get to the quicker car first then promptly running over the slower chump. Either that or we'd drive the car over to the next fastest cars driver side door to block the other player from entering it. That would usually result in the carless player jacking the other players car and then running them over. It was hilarious make-your-own-gameplay kind of fun or basically the kind of fun GTA games are renowned for.

I've got very, very high hopes for this and I'm positive Rockstar will make the grade.

I honestly could not care for a multiplayer GTA, unless that was the focus of the game. I love the 3D GTA games for being nearly perfect single player games for just losing yourself in a world for hours on end. I don't really feel that multiplayer would add much or anything to that experience.

Now if it were to offer a game-type that was different to the 'main' GTA game, then that may work, but I can't help but think it'll come off as half-arsed or tacked on.

I could see it working very well as an MMO type game, but then that's very much along the lines of the single player gameplay anyway, just with (arguably) more intelligent beings filling the city.

If they pull it off, great, but I'd be just as happy to play a GTAIV that was perfected as single player only.

I remember the multiplayer from GTA 1 & 2 Capoeira. I spent too many of my TAFE days lanning that game instead of studying. Cant wait to see what they do with GTA IV multiplayer.

Havent played Crackdown or Saints Row yet, maybe I should give them a try.

The story is where it's at. Gangsters, drug dealers, hookers, mafia bosses, corrupt cops e.t.c. Multiplayer would just be the icing on a potentially superb cake.
