Uncharted receives 1080 support, and PSN demo confirmed

PS3 News | Developer explains all…
Evan Wells, Co-President of Naughty Dog, has recently announced via the PlayStation Blog that their hotly anticipated PlayStation 3 title Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, will support up to 1080p via software scaling. Don’t get too excited though, the feature seems to have been implemented primarily to allow those with 1080i only TVs to play the game.

Wells explains “It will play in 1080p but it’s software scaled to help out those with 1080i sets, so if you have a 1080p TV you’ll still want to play it in 720p (which it will default to).” The 1080 support is great news for some early HDTV adopters whose sets output only 480p or 1080i resolutions. In a sea of other 720p only PlayStation 3 exclusives, including; Resistance Fall of Man, Motorstorm and more recently Heavenly Sword, this news will be particularly welcomed.

In addition, Wells confirms "we will be creating a downloadable demo for the PSN", stating that it will be released prior to the game hitting retail shelves. A firm date on the PSN demo is yet to be announced. PALGN will keep you updated as news comes to hand. In the meantime, check out our hands-on preview of the game here.

Hardware level resolution scaling, with aspect ratio control for standard 4:3, 4:5 and 16:10 resolutions should be implemented across-the-board on all current generation consoles IMHO.

We all know they're more than capable of it and a single frame buffer for resolution scaling shouldn't impact resources that much, if at all.

The lack of such a features in both consoles, PC monitors and TVs painfully highlights how far we still have to go before HD is a mum'n'dad friendly technology.

Although props to the Naughty Dog, they added support for 1080p scaling based on comments from the PlayStation blog. It's great to see developers listening to potential consumers and taking a visible and active role when they can.

The game is out next month isn't it? They might want to hurry along with that demo then.

I'm certainly not just saying that because I really, really want to play the game. Nope, not at all.

^^ Releasing around December 6. I had missed the bit about a demo, nice one.

This is news? Upscaling? Shouldn't all games on the PS3 be able to do this at the system level? If not, that's completely ridiculous.

I'm confused, shouldn't every single PS3 game offer 1080P? I mean, isn't that the whole point of the console, it's graphical capabilities?

Being a PC Gamer, I've been quite disappointed with this gen's "HD" consoles, as most games are still rendered at lower resolutions and "upscaled" to fit at a HD resolution, this does not make them HD.

On my PC I play all titles at 1920x1200 whenever possible, this does not mean that what I see on screen is actually a 1024x640 image that is being "upscaled" to my resolution, but rather, the image is being rendered by the video card at that resolution.

Every pixel on the screen is at its native resolution, when I play Halo 3 on the same screen, because the game runs at 640p, it shows larger pixels on the screen, and is visibly below the native resolution of the screen.

PC's have done it right from the start, with resolution being mostly dependant on the hardware, and I understand that developers are all working for the same hardware specification, and choose more often than not to sacrifice resolution for more on screen and faster frame-rates, but I just find it frustrating.
