Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare screens pop up

PS3 News | Looking rather modern.

Activision may only have dragged their headliner Call of Duty series from the most overused setting (World War II) to the second most overused setting (Modern Military), but it seems developer Infinity Ward bucked down and got to work, as the game was a surprise favourite after its showing at E3. Indeed, Activision has released eight new screens of the game many are calling the best looking console game this year.

While it's always hard to tell from screens, this batch do go some way to living up to the hype. We're not sure if they come from the PC, PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 version, although we're pretty sure they're not from the DS version. The only question we're left with is why they kept the clearly World War II inspired name - what 'duty' have these modern, non-conscription soldiers been 'called' to? Oh well, that's branding for you.

Those are completely and utterly awesome screenshots.. it really looks like they've captured the Call of Duty feel and just thrusted it into modern day times.. now to decide whether to get this on PC or Xbox 360..

does this have a single player campaign as well, or have they decided to go the Battlefield route, and make this a squad-based multi-player game only?

those images look decidedly mulitplayer - especially with the "Soldier 1" tags above the heads.

Multi-only would be a big mistake as it would not be COD without it. I totally agree with El Taco; Battlefield 2142 has unfortunately damaged the Battlefield series. Call of Duty could have easily gone the wrong way too but by good judgment they kept the recipe that made it popular to begin with. I'll plan & budget to be a PC owner for this game. This is one of only a handful of games I'm genuinely excited about.

This is probably my most anticipated title for the year. I love the direction they have taken this game in and it cannot be released soon enough.

I think the problem with Battlefield 2142 was timing. It seemed like EA / D!CE pushed it out far too soon than was necessary and so many were disappointed with the content. Looking at the engine they used, it seemed a logical move as it would not have had a chance in hell against some of the FPS behemoths about to emerge such as Unreal 3, Bioshock, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory, Crysis, Modern Warfare ,etc.. would it have been released today.

Ditto. BF2 is where I got up to.

The in-game-advertising in Battlefield 2142 doesnt help either. Apparently there was a reasonable stink kicked up by BF fans. Fair enough.

I enjoyed BF2, but modding it was a right pain, I played and enjoyed BF2142 for the first few months, but I've since tired of it and cannot wait for CoD4.

The E3 demonstrations are where my interest perked for CoD4, as I could see just how the game was living up to the possibilities. I'm pretty impressed with the direction it is taking. I was never a fan of a futuristic Battlefield and groaned when the inevitable happened and it was announced mid way into BF2's life, on the same engine, so hopefully Infinity Ward won't take the same route DICE did.

I've never, not once, noticed the advertising in BF2142. Now Splinter Cell..... I'm never going near a can of Lynx or a pack of Airwaves ever agin in protest.

I was gonna ramble on about how more devs should attempt to put their games in unusual settings instead of the usual 'world war/civil war' crap but after seeing the second screen I thought the best thing I can do right now is keep my mouth shut!

WOW!

As long as it's not a tactical shooter (GRAW) and sticks to the Call of Duty formula (awesome set-pieces) then this is definately a must-have despite it's generic subject content (I really really really don't like real-life settings....I much prefer fantasy/sci-fi...you know something that you won't see on the news or down the road). I just can't pass up awesome set-pieces and Inifinity Ward are known for some of the best in the biz.

It shows you the last 5 seconds of gameplay from the point of view of the person who killed you. It's essentially spectating your death from the killer's view so you can see where they got you from, how, whatever tactics they used etc. It's great for learning or for those "omgwtfhax!" moments.
