Sony deny (once again) rumble for PS3 controller

PS3 News | While at the same time confirm minor analog stick and motion sensing upgrades.
Speaking to GamePro, Sony’s director of corporate communications, Dave Karraker, has remained firm that Sony has no plans to implemented a rumble feature into the Sixaxis controller following new rumours that have been doing the rounds on the internet in recent weeks.

“We have not added rumble [to PS3], and have no announcements regarding this feature," Karraker insisted.

Karraker did however reveal that Sony had made slight modifications to the Sixaxis controller’s motion sensing technology and analog sticks.

"From time to time, we make minor enhancements to the controllers for our platforms," Karraker revealed. "We recently sent out to the development community some new prototypes that have a slightly enhanced sensitivity for the analog sticks and the motion sensing within the Sixaxis controller. This is not a new controller, but is part of the normal development and evolution of controllers."

We doubt the upgrades will have a major impact on current or future PlayStation 3 projects however it is nice to see that Sony are trying to improve their hardware for the benefit of developers which could very well mean - in the long run - less delays and improved software.

Well hurry up and make the bloody announcement then cuz I ain't buying another controller for the Ps3 unless it has rumble.

^ Agreed. I don't know why they'd bother beating around the bush with this. Even just a statement to the effect of 'we are currently looking in to/planning to investigate the viability of a 'next-gen rumble' SIXAXIS controller for the Playstation 3' would be enough.
Stop toying with us, damnit!

I wish these technology giants wouldn't f*** us around. Damn Phil just confirm it or say rubbish already.

even if they are working on a ShockAxis controller, you can't really blame Sony for keeping it hidden. afterall, if everyone KNEW a new controller was coming, it'd leave a lot of stock sitting on the shelves as people just hold out until the upgrade comes.

but by keeping mum, people have to toss up between having not enough controllers, or risking the obsoletion of their newest purchase. and as time goes on, more and more stock will sell because someone needs a new controller.

if a ShockAxis is in the works (and i don't doubt it isn't) they'll deny it as long as they possibly can. just like they did with the PSP V2. just like MS did with the Elite. just like Nintendo did with the DS Lite.

Ahh, natch. My cynicism must have been on a toilet break or something... what was I thinking?

You nailed it Obs, we see this sort of thing happening again and again from all three companies, it's pretty much standard policy. Nobody in their right mind would just go out and announce what they're planning, not if they want to sell any more of their existing stock at least. I have no doubts that the ShockAxis is in development (we even have to reason to refer to it as the ShockAxis after all), and I like the premise. All we must do have is patience my friend. icon_smile.gif Personally, I already bought an extra controller with my PS3, so I'm all set for now anyway.

it's not exactly a new occurrence, nor is it limited to the games industry.

of course, it all depends on IF there is a ShockAxis in development, but we don't have proof either way, and how can you prove something doesn't exist? i'm sure we've had enough religious debates on the internet to show how impossible it is.

it could well become one of those self-fulfilling things, i mean, Sony might be telling the truth right now, but if the rumours persist long enough, they might buckle and consider it something worth doing.
and then, once it is released, we'll all be sitting here going "See! i told you this is what they'll do!" even if they were honest in the first place.

they could just be honestly telling the truth in not having plans to include rumble >.>

but i'm going to stay at this point to not get my hopes up, and if they do announce it i will be super happy so its a win/win emotional rollercoaster ride for me.

I'd rather they fix the motion sensing in their controller. From all the times I've used it it's been shoddy and I've turned it off the moment I could.

Let's just remember how many lies Sony's told in the past icon_wink.gif

To anyone actually thinking this guy is telling the truth don't forget that Sony and Immersion settled their lawsuit and struck an agreement to use Immersion tech in future products:

Source">"We look forward to exploring with Immersion exciting new ways to bring the largest and best range of gameplay experiences to our customers," added SCE president Kazuo Hirai. "We are very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies."
Rumble will come to the PS3, that much is certain. It's just a matter of when...

Absolutely spot on.

At the moment some serious inventory management is going on. There is a lot of old stock that needs to be dumped before wheeling out the next big thing to draw sales. If they balls this one up they are in trouble. 2 million units selling at $100 loss is $200 million that gets offset by connecting software sales. 2 million dead inventory is an $800 million loss with no offset! ouch!

This is infuriating, even when they do finally implement rumble into their controllers there will be at least a 12 month lag before developers include support for it into games.

I was relieved to hear that GTA IV had been delayed because I hoped it might mean that when it does finally get released it will include rumble support, now this looks unlikely.

It's like Sony are going out of their way to give me reasons not to buy a PS3, absurd price, woeful library, lack of exclusives, removal of backwards compatibility, no rumble support.
