PS3 UT3 to support mouse and keyboard

PS3 News | User selectable control system.
Some wars never die - an almost guaranteed way to kick-start a passionate debate between PC and console players is to ask which is better for first-person shooter games. Epic, however, seems to be willing to play UN ambassador to this age-old conflict, having just announced in their forums that the PlayStation 3 will support keyboard and mouse for Unreal Tournament 3.

Speaking out of the blue, Vice President of Epic Games Mark Rein said, "I checked with Steve Polge and he said that YES we are supporting keyboard and mouse in Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3. He is confident we are doing it in a way that will be balanced without feeling "gimped" for either side. We'll also allow people to choose whether or not they want to allow mixed controller vs. keyboard/mouse games or not."

He provided little other information, other than deliberately avoiding any discussion about the Xbox 360 version. Given the the PlayStation 3 release will be a console exclusive, it's quite possible that the final specifications for the 360 version aren't ready for announcement yet. Rein also avoided any further discussion about cross-platform play, a topic made all the more interesting by the recent announcement.

The keyboard vs. controller debate is old one. Console players will normally immediately point to Halo, claiming the benefits of sitting back on the couch and saying a few million people can't be wrong. PC players normally respond that aiming with an analog stick feels like playing pick-up sticks with gloves on, and that it's impossible to have any accuracy, making the game less fun. What do you think, and will you be playing Unreal Tournament 3 with a keyboard or an analog stick? Let us know in our forums!

Unless they've got some advanced matchmaking that prevents controller users going up against mouse+keyboard users, this is bad news for UT3 online with the PS3.

Also, I can only assume that the keyboard/mouse option was added in because virtually as soon as the news that UT3 was coming to the 360/PS3 people started asking for keyboard/mouse support. You can't please everyone, obviously, but by giving players the option to filter out other users based on control scheme it allows people to play how they want. This will (as suggested) fragment the user base to a degree... but given how huge UT is I don't think we'll be too hard pressed finding players icon_wink.gif

Cool.. I just kinda skimmed over the article, missed that bit of info icon_smile.gif

It'll still harm the community - as you said, and I believe it'll be disastrous to clan gaming in UT3. Thats assuming many people will use the keyb+mouse, surely most people keep their consoles in their lounge rooms hooked up to a TV?

I'm buying UT3 on both PS3 and PC, because I read (can't remember the site) that there will not be any cross platform combat. And I want to destroy both the PC and PS3 community in this game.

Good news for this support. Just add Logitech G5 software and support and it'll be ultimate.

UT3, Quake Wars, Crysis, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4 - all at home and all best enjoyed on PC. No doubts in my mind what so ever.
