Gears of War PS3 rumour squashed

PS3 News | "Complete nonsense."
Rumours have been flying fast and furious since 1UP's speculation on a number of podcasts that Epic Games had plans to extend the Gears of War franchise onto the PlayStation 3. Understandably, the comments made in the podcast created somewhat of a storm in a teacup, with many Xbox 360 fans rather unhappy with Epic's apparently lackadaisical approach to exclusivity.

However, Epic's Mark Rein recently contacted PSX Extreme to clarify the situation. In short? Bollocks.

Being blunt, Rein said that the rumour was "complete nonsense". Leaving no room for doubt, he added, "We've shot down this Gears of War on PS3 idea about a hundred times already - Microsoft is the publisher of Gears of War. Unless Microsoft wants to publish it on PS3 then it won't be published on PS3."

Interestingly however, Rein also said that Epic only has two IPs under development - Gears of War for the PC and Unreal Tournament 3. Where this sits in relation to his very recent comments about Gears of War for the Mac remains a little unclear. It's quite possible that the project to port Gears may be further down the line, suggesting that Mac users shouldn't hold their breath. At least not unless they like blacking out.

Hahah! Was there even a rumour? Probably just a couple of sony fanboys going:

Fanboy 1: "Oh man...it's getting ported to Pc and now Mac of course if gonna come to Ps3 bro!"

Fanboy 2: "Sikk man"

Fanboy 1: "Fullies"

The rest was history. Those fanboys ofcourse being the podcasters from 1up. I really don't like 1up for some reason....lovely interface and webdesign etc but their journalism skills SUCK! Or maybe it's their humour? Either way I no like.

Epic and M$ are clearly helping each other out here. I would say M$ wouldn't have any problems porting this to MAC down the track, as long as it never graces the PS3 and Gears 2 hits the 360 first.

Really, we've been playing this game for 9 months now, I want to hear some info about Gears 2!

^ 9 months? Man I played for like 9 days and was over it, still my fave game on 360 but it's good you can get so much value out it.

Ha. Playing through that game on insane difficulty on online-co-op is one of my best gaming moments. It's tough, rewarding and unlocks pretty achievements. One of the only games I have ever finish completey 3 times.

Online mutiplayer it's pretty awesome too. The whole game just reeked of awesomeness next-gen.

I have visions of 4-player co-op in gears 2. Makes me very happy.

It has provided me with the best online experience I've ever had, thus far.

Looking for it to only be surpassed by Gears 2.

It's provided me with one of the best online experience - it's hanging under Starcraft, and the top which is UT2004, which is also an Epic game.

Epic kick arse, nuff said.

I hate exclusives. Don't get me wrong, I have a 360 and we have the better share of exclusive games (everything except MGS4 and a 2007 release of UT3), but I'm more into the gaming side of things, not the business side. I'm glad that people who shelled out $1k for a PS3 can also play the Tom Clancy games - easily some of the best games on 360, in a perfect world you wounldn't need to own 3 consoles to get all of the great games...

hmmm i don't want gears on the ps3, it will only lower us to M$ standards >.>

generic guy: "captain! we've got an army approaching from all directions!"

captain: "oh god... what has he done this time"

but either way, gears defines a 360, even though some people dislike exclusives it can really show what a console is capable of and defines it somewhat.

I really couldn't care less if it comes out on the PS3 format, at least the PS3 peepz will see some good graphics compared to what they have at the moment. icon_razz.gif

Honestly though, so what if it does come out on PS3, it's not like it is going to matter one iota with what the 360 camp can add-on or bring out.All this cross console MS this and Sony this crap makes me ill, if the dev wants to make more money releasing it on another platform well good on 'em.Like Capcom on the Res4 gamecube to PS2 conversions. The more people that get to play great games = more profits for the devs to develop even greater games.

noooooo you're missing the point of exclusives. Exclusives are always the most extraordinary games in a library. Look at your GC, PS2 and Xbox libraries. The best games are all exclusives.

The developers who make exclusives don't have to worry about coding for multiple platforms resulting in that particular hardware being pushed to the limits. Also, instead of wasting time optimising and coding both versions, developers can really focus on the important things like level design, detail, content and polishing up the mechanics.

This was never gonna happen, Microsoft wouldn't of let it. Would of liked to have seen it happen though. Might have been good to play on a PS3 if they included new levels and stuff.

install linux on the ps3, let it run a virtual windows mode and install the pc version of gears on it when it comes out oO?

wonder if that would work.

One thing I like about 1up is they're far more willing to slam a game and give it below average ratings than IGN or Gamespot are. 1up consistently rates lower. I like that, most games have it too easy.

It kinda blows that PC got 5 more Chapters of Gears. That's effectively double the game 360 players got. Still I didn't think Gears was all that special, though I mainly played it alone. On the odd occasion I had a friend over it was a lot more fun.

First you've got the problem that Linux on the PS3 does not let you access the RSX graphics processor. Then you've got the problem that no virtualisation programs on the market at the moment are good enough to let you run games. Other than VMware Fusion for Macs, which even then only runs a handful of old games really slowly.

Therefore GoW on PS3 = never ever ever.

Once they've got the graphics drivers sorted out:

Or alternatively, it could be a Harvey Norman-style PS3...

Seen Killzone 2 or Uncharted lately? Try running that on a 360.

The damn Cell processor is becoming a great force to have driving games. With all the things it can do on the side, its made much more possible.

Its not so much whether the games can be run on the 360 or not, its more about the size of the games.

And the relevance of that is? I directed my comment to running it on the PS3 as a Linux box.

Plus there's Halo 3 and Tomb Raider on Xbox 360 icon_wink.gif

^yeah, i just thought that since there was a pc version, and linux can run a windows clone? on it that there would've been a method. But still, i think Gears belong's on the 360, one of those taboo games personally and it would feel somewhat unnatural to me at least lol.
