PSN Tekken: Dark Resurrection Online Review

PS3 Review | Still a good value purchase?
Aside from a brief cameo experience on the Game Boy Advance, the Tekken series has had a strong affiliation with Sony. Ever since the first Tekken title debuted on the original PlayStation, Sony fans have been given a reliable franchise that's consistantly pushing Sony's hardware. Last year's Dark Resurrection (a port of the arcade version) pushed the PSP and resulted in a brilliant fighting game. With Tekken 6 still quite a while away, Namco Bandai has released a virtually arcade perfect port of Dark Resurrection for the PlayStation 3, but with some online features. Is the game a slapdash port or a title that no PlayStation 3 owner should be without?

Tekken: Dark Resurrection was originally released a few months ago on the PlayStation Store but has since been replaced by Dark Resurrection Online, which adds online play to the mix. There is no option to download the offline only version now and PlayStation 3 owners who want to add this game to their collection will need to fork over $27.95.

The PlayStation 3 version of Dark Resurrection Online is quite different from its older PSP cousin. The story mode which is normally a staple of the Tekken series is gone. In its place is a ghost mode. Rather than fight against a bundle of different fighters and moving onto the final battle, you'll need to continuously fight different characters with different characteristics. This means that the difficulty level keeps increasing as you become more familiar with the game. Practice mode and Survival mode have also been added to the single player game with this update.

It is a little disappointing that novelty games like the bowling mini-game from Tekken Tag Tournament haven't been included in the game, but these were only ever supplements to the fighting anyway. The PlayStation 3 version does get a little bonus though. Jinpachi Mishima, the final boss from Tekken 5, is selectable as a fighter. Unfortunately though Jinpachi isn't a particularly appealing fighter and it's likely that after selecting him once you'll return to your favourite characters.

Even though the PlayStation Portable version of Dark Resurrection Online was a fantastic port it's unsurprising that the PlayStation 3 version is a superior game technically. The game runs at 60 frames per second and even though the game doesn't look quite as good as the PlayStation 3 launch titles, Dark Resurrection Online doesn't look like a barely upgraded PSP port. In fact just thinking about other PSP games which could make the jump to the PlayStation 3 in budget form has us foaming at the mouth, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops anyone?

Dark Resurrection Online now features some online options. The game includes several online options including Opti Match, Quick Match, Custom Match and Friend Match. Battles can also be viewed through the lobbies and voice support is included. Fighting games have long shied away from offering online modes because the smallest bit of lag can kill a battle, thankfully the network code seems quite solid, so we didn't have any real issues online.

Sure it doesn't look as good as a full PlayStation 3 game but it's 1/4 of the price.

Tekken: Dark Resurrection isn't a title that's going to convince those who don't like the Tekken franchise that they should give the series a shot. The game is a cheap fighting game download. Dark Resurrection Online is a fantastic game and even though it's missing a few features that fully fledged Tekken titles normally contain, it's hard not to recommend this game to anyone who enjoys the Tekken franchise. With a price point under $30 Dark Resurrection Online is incredible value and a decent addition to the PlayStation Network.

Please note this review was originally posted in July but has been updated to explain the new features of Dark Resurrection Online. The score has not been changed in anyway but information on the game's price point and features has been edited.
The Score
Dark Resurrection Online is still a thoroughly enjoyable fighting game that should appeal to those who have liked the previous games. It is a little light on features in comparison to other Tekken titles but is still incredibly good value. 8

Playing this game made me realise how over Tekken I am. The series really needs to change soon. Tekken 6 needs to really change something otherwise it will just be plain boring.

The remixed soundtrack completely sucks compared to the original too (5 I mean).

Nice having the price listed in the Info panel.

Could this become a permanent feature of reviews?

Obviously it would be too hard to always have the best price listed, but it could just be the RRP, which would be handy.
