Australia not getting a PlayStation 3 price cut either

PS3 News | A new bundle to be offered instead.
A few days ago Sony cut the price of the PlayStation 3 to $499 US ($576 AUD) in the US and Canada. Many were expecting that Sony UK and Sony Australia would follow suit, though it has since been revealed that Europe will instead be receiving a PlayStation 3 bundle. And, according to Screenplay, the same is true for Australia.

According to the blog, gamers will get a 60GB console packaged with MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, and a bonus second controller. The console will still retail for $999. The blog also comments that "the 80GB version of the console will not be released in Australia in the immediate future".

PAL gamers not only received the PlayStation 3 late, but also one that didn't include the emotion engine, a chipset that enabled the PlayStation 3 to play back all PlayStation 2 titles natively rather than through software emulation. Now PAL gamers are paying more than the US and Canada and being forced into purchasing a bundle to boot, a very disappointing outcome for gamers looking to buy the system they wanted at a reasonable price.

*sigh*

looks like i'm waiting a bit longer then, as Motorstorm holds no interest whatsoever for me, and while Resistance does, i don't feel it's justified the pricetag.

still, it's good to see we aren't missing out totally.

Not a bad deal really though.

However you can pick up a 360 pro pack for $537 @ JB. If you haven't got a 360, GO BUY ONE NOW!

^ You phail Leon.

Have Sony said something or is this just another person jumping to conclusions (like the earlier BBC one) after the bundle was announced?

This could just be our $1000 console/bundle/sku (without the 80GB) while the standalone 60GB goes down to $800. (Notice how that bundle has about $200 worth of extras?).

We don't have the emotion chip so the 80GB sku doesn't have to come here, but they still want the two different bundles/skus on the market, so they do this.

That's difficult to understand, but it makes sense to me. Either way, I need to hear it from Sony.

seems like a pretty good deal, its a shame that it can't be as cheap as 360 but we have to remind ourselves we arnt buying faulty hardware here >.>

If you're talking RRP then theres well over $200 worth in that pack deal. Still, it doesn't cater to nearly as many people as a straight up price drop as Obs has made vocal.

AWESOME, thats even better than what I was expecting^^

Thankyou Sony, Im so getting this bundle.

@Karai: Yeah of course, but I just think people have been using that jumping to conclusions mat too offen (refer to Office Space).

The price drop still might happen.

The bad thing about this bundle is that the controllers are rumble-less. Shame.

is there confirmation of rumble and when it will be out? i don't remember seeing any confirmation of it.

You just made my emotions burn to the ground icon_sad.gif I forgot, but I can live without rumble, heck i might grab cheap controllers one day. Its still worth the bundle imo....

my reaction to this:

MUTHA*****ER!

I would have bought a PS3 when the price cut happened!

I don't mind the bundle either but we won't know til whenever it happens.

The new controllers were officially announced weren't they? Or at least, it was an 'official' at Sony who was talking about them recently? No? There's been so much news lately that I'm forgetting all the finer details icon_razz.gif

a potential drop to $800 would be VERY hard for me to ignore. even without the 2 games and extra controller.

if this package is boxed, i might have to keep an eye out for any deals happening because of a restock of this new package over the launch box.

i'm still having a much harder time justifying dropping $500 on an XBox than i am justifying $800 on a PS3.

i want both, but in absolute terms i think the PS3, even now with none of the games i want even out yet, represents better value to what i do want than the X360 - even at $300+ more.

I don't think Sony need to drop the price in Europe and Aus because it is selling OK here. That and it's only been out for 4 months.

I'm sure i heard september for the release of the rumble controller.

My thoughts exactly. PS3 represents better value to me as a gaming console and a blu-ray drive at this price. X-Box 360 has great games also but i think blu-ray and the ever-lingering chance of faulty hardware are my biggest concerns.

Not suprised at all.

Sony's sales increase probably will be closer to 50 percent than the doubling Tretton forecasts, Pachter said. At $499, the price of a 20-gigabyte model that's being discontinued, the PlayStation 3 still is costly, especially when the Wii is available for half the price and the PlayStation 2 sells for $129, he said.

Sony will cut prices further as production costs continue to drop, Pachter said.

``Five hundred dollars isn't going to get anyone excited,'' he said. ``It's good as a signal if nothing else.''

Sony can cut prices because the company has fixed production problems with a diode used in the PlayStation 3's Blu-ray disk player, said Tretton, who is based in Foster City, California. He declined to discuss costs for the console.

Clearing up the trouble made PlayStation 3 profitable several months ago, giving the company room to cut prices, analyst Doherty said. Microsoft still loses money on each Xbox 360 it sells, he said.

``Any price cut they try to make puts them more into the red,'' Doherty said.

In addition to a larger hard drive, the new PlayStation 3 model will also come with the racing game ``MotorStorm,'' Tretton said.

i probably should've clarified that as a Blu-Ray player, it holds no worth to me at all. i'm totally against both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD for movies.

so purely from a games machine perspective, i still consider the PS3 to be better value for what i want.

Well this means HN Chatswood should have this package for $899 then. which is still a rip off i dont like either of the games.

I wait for longer i guess.

You are aware that is a bunch of analyst drivel, right?

When was the last time Sony didn't bend australia over and ....well you know.

They did it with pricing, they did it with removing the emotion engine, they did it with a +6 month launch date to everyone else, now there doing it again.Aren't you guys sick of Sony?
