European PS3 price cut details revealed

PS3 News | Here's a hint. There isn't one.
In what can only be described as a deliberate PR attempt to swing this one through under the radar by announcing it not at E3 but during E3, Sony's just released details about the European PS3 pack.

Brace yourselves, because you may or may not be happy about this. There isn't going to be a price cut. Yup, you read that right - the BBC reports that the 60GB PS3 will continue to retail for £425. On top of that, there are apparently no plans at this stage to offer an 80G version for Europe. Guess all that online content isn't really that important to Europeans, after all.

So what's the good news? Well, not all is lost. The £425 deal will now include two games and two controllers. For those interested in multiplayer action, that's pretty cool - you get the second controller for free. And, if you were planning on getting Resistance and Motorstorm anyway, you're laughing - you've just ended up with everything you wanted for the same price you were going to pay originally. 'Course, from the looks of it, they've also saddled you with a pair of controllers that are now officially superseded, but hey - you did get that second job, didn't you? Piece of cake. Just buy some replacements.

How this will impact Sony's target of shipping 11 million PS3s by the end of the year remains to be seen. What also remains to be seen is what offer will be made to Australia / New Zealand. Price cuts may not be around the corner after all ...

Sony didn't actually say there isn't one... they just released this bundle and BBC jumped to conclusions. Not the wildest of conclusions, but they can't be sure yet.

I'll wait for it to come from the horse's mouth. This report says something should happen soon about it.

I think there will be a price cut. However, what really annoys me is the controller situation. The fact that they are being replaced by much more advanced technology means that the current ones are virtually useless. Who pays $70 for old technology. Give me a break Sony.

The whole "new bundle at same price" thing is completly stupid. If you cut the price, cut the price, don't cut the price and then release a package with a few extra things then charge the same.
It just confuses the situation.

It's obvious why we're not getting the 80GB PS3.

The 80GB model doesn't have the emotion engine, so it's their way of phasing out the Emotion Engine-equipped PS3 in North America. They don't need to do that in Europe or Australia.

Logical though will suggest that the 60GB is going bye-bye. 80GB is cheaper to produce, so PAL regions need to get that soon. On top of that, the 80GB doesn't have the EEC (emotion engine chip) so it'll be used for two objectives in the USA.

Either way it doesn't effect me. If I buy a PS3 onshore, its going to have no EEC and then its going to get a 320GB HDD slapped on by yours truly.

Well the bundle is good, MotorStorm and Resistance were the two games I first got and I also bought a new controller just after that so ppl who want the PS3 have a good deal.
The 80GB PS3 will come just not for a little while yet and the price cut will come by the end of the year in my opinion.
Sony has been in alot of mess during the year (I think because of the PAL delay) but during 2008 things will all come together...well they better icon_mad.gif

PS3 standalone is to be replaced by the bundle.
Resistance is rated 18+
Therefore: PS3 in Europe is only available to those over the age of 18.

this is a good package, i'm abit dissapointed that the controls are going to be useless in the long run, but then again it will only be without rumble and since there are those who don't care if there is rumble or not they will have no problems at all.

just wish they announced it back at e3

That's... brilliant icon_lol.gif Though I bet they'll still sell the consoles to be people underage. Not that people under 18 would have that much money to spend on a console, it'll be mostly mummy and daddy chipping in.

I'll think I'll wait until the rumble is implemented, I've got time.

They are laptop hard drives, so a maximum of 160GB, or 200GB if you are lucky (at the moment anyway).

I'd say it will be quite a while before there are 2.5" 320GB drives.

^for this gen atleast, i don't think it will be necessary to have 320GB hdd's 160gb would be my limit, any more and i'd just get an external which i could use to store media and could double as a pc media hub as well.
