E3 2007: Sony E3 press conference

PS3 Feature | Bringing it Home?
For those of you who don't have the bandwidth or time to catch the conference live, we'll be frequently updating this article for you. The latest updates are at the top.

06:07
Phew - we're done. What did you think? Has Sony already stolen the show? Let us know.

06:05
Now Jack is really wrapping it up. He sounds... humble. Almost apologetic. Talking about how much he appreciates everyone's attention and support - an amazing turn around for Sony.

06:00
Finally back to Jack to wrap it up... wait something coming new... Killzone. "Everything you are about to see is real-time". Looking amazing - trailer starts the same as it did two years ago. Another must download.

05:57
Grand Turismo 5: Prologue trailer is up next. I think I'm getting trailered out.

05:57
New game announcement from Sly Cooper developer Sucker Punch. Game is called Infamous. Lots of stylistic action. Not much info about what's going on. Looks tentatively promising.

05:53
Finally; Uncharted Drake's Fortune. The new Naughty Dog franchise for PS3. Trailer is talking about how the power of the PS3 will make all the animation possible. Sound familiar? This is "going to be the best game Naught Dog has ever made."

05:52
Ahhh here's LittleBigPlanet. "Play Create Share". Trailer will focus on the ability to create content. The game will focus on creating content initially. When it first comes out, it will be all about the creation.

05:49
Now briefly NBA 08. Another trailer.

05:48
Moving on quickly - into a Heavenly Sword trailer. "It's an extremely story driven game." "Without BlueRay we really wouldn't have been able to create Heavenly Sword."

05:46
Briefly back to Home, then into a trailer for Folklore from Game Republic and Japan Studios.

05:45
Back to Phil. He's back in Home dressed in a Ratchet and Clank suit (in Home). Talking about following on from Kojima - though dressing up might help. Now into trailer for Ratchet and Clank Future Tools of Destruction.

05:44
Kojima will show more mechanics of the game next week.

05:42
MGS4 trailer is brilliant as always. I'm not going to try to describe it. Go download. Now. At the end of the trailer it says simultaneous worldwide release in early 2008.

05:38
This MGS4 will be the final of the series. The story of Snake will end and this will be Kojima's last participation in the series. All the story lines and the characters, all the saga will be revealed. The game will be stealth, but in the battlefield. "Putting all my experience from the past 40 years into this experience". Going to show a real-time footage from the game in a new trailer.

05:35
One last third party franchise - only on PS3 - Metal Gear Solid 4. Hideo Kojima is up!

05:30
More third party titles. Videos for; Call Of Duty 4, Assassins Creed, Kane & Lynch, Resident Evil 5 (trailer similar to Microsoft's), Burnout Paradise, Madden NFL 08, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Simpsons Game, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Medal of Honour Airborne and Rock Band.

05:24
Now with Epic and Midway - exclusive partnerships. Optimising the Unreal Engine for PS3. This will be very important for many developers. Unreal Tournament 3 will be PS3 exclusive this year. Showing a short video. If they're still working on the engine it's already come a long way.

05:21
With Ubisoft - Haze will be PS3 exclusive these holidays. Showing off a short demo video - lots of gunfire, lots of... haze. Game looks very pretty - go check out that trailer.

05:19
Now onto the third parties. NCSoft will now be developing exclusive games for the Playstation Network. "Only the Playstation Network will be able to provide the level of content that they have become famous for."

05:18
"PS3 success has contributed greatly to Blu-ray success, to the tune of a 2:1 sales margin over HD-DVD."

05:17
That's it for Home. Phil hands back to Jack. Talking about the 80GB drive and the price drop by $100 US - makes a joke about how it slipped out early.

05:13
Finally in Home - Phil shows us that we'll be able to launch any games from inside the service. He launches up a game of Motorstorm - a brand new map coming for download next month. Playing with 11 people from across the world.

05:12
Phil is showing us his own chalet. There a video of SingStar on the wall - wiping over to a SingStar presentation on the big screens. It's "iTunes meets mySpace" all on PS3. Back into Home. Phil walks over to a wall and it's automatically had the photo he took earlier uploaded on there. He shows how you can take pictures and push them out onto a live website - their social network for Home.

05:07
Phil turns back to Playstation Home. Says the developers are learning a lot through the Beta. Introducing some new features - the Home client is running live on his Sony Ericsson!?! Ah, it's only some functionality, not the 3D interface. He's taking a picture with the phone. Puts it back in his pocket. Now showing Home. Ah, there's Phil! The characters are looking much more realistic. They're showing some new "Spaces" under construction. All looking fairly snazzy. Architecture is looking a lot like Second Life, although the textures are clearly much better.

05:05
Now mentioning Wipeout HD, Pain, Warhawk and Socom. Showing off some short demo vids of each. Wipeout looks very... HD. Pain doesn't seem to have evolved much from what we've seen so far - just trying to inflict the most damage possible on your character. For Warhawk they're showing an interview spliced with gameplay footage on different screens. Still looking great. Finally Socom - presented the same way as Warhawk. Talking about how much more is possible on the PS2.

05:00
Showing "the least graphics and most gameplay that you will see at E3". Introducing Echochrome. There's a stick figure walking along planks, falking through holes. All black and white line drawings. As the shape spins around planks join up. Very escher-esque. Looks interesting.

04:58
Phil is promoting the benefits of the PS3 hardware in terms of the technical prowess of their games. "We have more than 80 games for the network through to the end of March next year."

04:58
Over 2 millions users on the Playstation network worldwide. Promoting their games on the network Super Star Dust HD, Flow.... and here comes Phil Harrison.

04:56
Chewbacca is being rolled out to introduce a special Star Wars PSP. Looks like a new skin to go along with their Battlefront game. Jack tries to joke about adding being hugged by Chewy to his CV - only one of the faithful laughs.

04:50
Also; new ice silver PSP will come in an entertainment pack with Daxter, 1GB Memory Stick, and The Family Guy Frickin' Sweet UMD. For $199.99 US.

04:48
Kaz announces new PSP version; same hardware, but 33% lighter and 19% slimmer. Better battery and video - available September in the US.

04:46
Back to Home. Jack walks over to an avatar of Kaz Hirai and asks; "Are you playing Riiiidge Racer?"

04:44
PSP game trailers; SOCOM, Wipeout Pulse, Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, NBA 08, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Silent Hill Origins, Patapon, Tiger Woods Tour 08, Sonic Rivals 2, The Sims 2 Castaway, SWAT: Target Liberty, Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, and Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles.

04:40
On to PSP; 9 million units shipped is the goal for 2007. UMD sales up 35% since 2006. Hardware sales up 90% since price drop in April.

04:38
First some stats on PS2; 118 million units, $26 billion US in sales. More than 160 PS2 games coming next quarter. God of War II, Buzz! and SingStar shown on the screen.

04:36
They're going to show us lots of games "along with a few surprises".

04:36
Ahh, here's the real Jack up on stage. "Over the past 13 years, Sony has strived to deliver not only great innovation, but great entertainment." They're very pleased with the progress on Home.

04:33
Ohh snappy - we're on. After a short intro we're into Home. Jack Tretton (President &CEO of Sony America) has an avatar of himself on the screens. He's walking around. Goes into the "Home Square".

04:30
So here we are with the last of the major press conferences. Out of the three, Sony probably have the most to prove - however with the relatively medicore efforts from both Microsoft and Nintendo so far, it might not be difficult for them to walk away with the crown (if there was one for best E3 press conference). Stay tuned as we continue our live updates.

Agreed, they've just concreted my decision to get a PS3 over a Wii. That Killzone 2 video was awesome, as was the GT5 Prologue. icon_eek.gif

Only bit I missed!

I liked the bit where they confirmed that Metal Gear Solid is the best goddamn game ever.

I can't wait to see this press conference when i get home. I hope to hell it's better than the 360 one. Seriously the 360 one was **** nothing basically new and it was boring imo, i really don't think they took it seriously this time. Hopefully by the time i get home they will have one up for download at a decent quality icon_smile.gif

Not bad, but not that exciting either. From what they said: Sony did a “safe” paint by numbers pitch covering all bases, lots of Sony style sell through numbers & fluff. Sony has hijacked the word “innovative” now, and some stuff about UMD, Bluray blah blah... From what we saw: some good product with TV-pluggable PSP but nothing else shocking or rumbling?, a huge focus on Home (why not that the new store front), and a good lineup of game on the way with nice pictures. Anything unexpected? I didn't notice. It was...OK.

On the games: Unreal first release on PS3 is attractive for the impatient, sucker punch game ads some irony - a good looking game by former Microsoft crew, but MGS4 remains the platform seller for me and I suppose Killzone 2 was the ace being played. Was anyone hot for anything else?

^^Yeah Heavenly Sword.

I thought the Sony show was ok a little more pacey than the MS one.

Again I think with the way the companies do their marketing its hard to jump out and surprise people nowadays. Just too many ways to get information.

Sony did the price cut grabbed the headlines te eday before E3. Smart play.

while i enjoyed watching the sony conference i didn't get that feeling like a child opening up christmas presents which i was expecting to get.

while the announcement of the psp v2 was a good one and made it feel a little better and some of the new games they will be introducing it wasn't really hitting it home for me. Most of the games i've known about and while it did have alot of home content, it wasn't content which we didn't already know, i was expecting new stuff this year but i guess this will have todo.

that and they failed to produce a rumble version of the controller which to me personally was one of the things i was waiting for, that and could'nt get the song white'n'nerdy when furball walked in on stage.

still though, i'm feeling better after reading some hand's on reviews on other sites.

Thought it was a quality showing not amazing though, i agree with ittekimasu, new controller would have been nice. The games comming all really impressed me, Killzone looked better then i thought it would. Cant wait for Uncharted either. looked awsome!

I AGREE WITH THE "TAKE MY MONEY SONY" SENTIMENTS.

Seriously, man... and it's not just what they showed, it's the way in which they showed it too. This is a revitalised Sony, really searching for innovation. Gamers everywhere should be very excited.

No mention of the new Star Wars game for PS3? Where is GTAIV?

HELLO?!

Great presentation. At least they did something right. I just want them to hurry up and get home out.

Both Sony's and M$ press conferences sucked. The winner was clearly Nintendo.

Feels like Sony have conceded 2007 and pushing all their big games into 2008.

Killzone. "Everything you are about to see is real-time".
I've heard this before Sony, I'll believe when I can play it.

Motorstorm anyone?
Personally I think Motorstorm is one of the best looking games you can currently buy (along with Gears of War), so I believe them when they say Killzone 2 will look that good and really the amount of hype and controversy it's generated they would be stupid not to get it looking like that.

Positives:
*Nice to see a big announcment like UE3 being an exclusive (timed?).
*PSP has a good line up of games (GoW you m*****f***ers!!)
*MGS4 being realtime.
*A simple showcase of a lot of promising titles (both 3rd and 1st party).

Negatives:
*No new footage blew me away. Saw Killzone last night so meh at everything.
*If felt like they talked a lot ****.
*No release dates for anything. 2007 is owned by MS.

Sony's was modest, Nintendo's was completely directed at non-gamers (even though the entire audience are veterans), and MS's was a source of hilarity.

1) Peter Moore playing RockBand.
2) Smack talk during Madden had Reggie Bush say, "all you MS guys... you all cheat!"
3) Could hear a pin drop when the Halo3 design console was announced.

Good times.

No way Ugh, I beg to differ with you on Motorstorm. I'm over it - infact I was over the game play within 3 hours. Gameplay aside, I also don't think it is graphicaly special either. PC racers like GTR2, GT Legends, Colin McRae 4 games are significantly better looking and any doubts in that department check out DiRT. MotorStorm is real skin deep graphics once you play for a while you realise just how thin it is. Dont start me on environmental & model damage - Motorstorm looked great in the clips and sucked me in. Next time I'll try before I buy.

I do agree that Killzone 2 should get the all out royal development treatment as this is clearly being polished & positioned as an important Sony owned franchise.

Well I dont think I will see another good E3 like Nintendos last year one, but I say out of the ones this year sony probably had it.

I agree. None were knockouts, but Sony were probabaly the best, since they showed the most new stuff.
