PlayStation 3 Amazon ranking up 2,800%

PS3 News | You what now?
Hot on the heels of the PlayStation 3 price drop confirmation, the sales ranking of the PlayStation 3 on Amazon has increased at their peak by an absolutely staggering 2,800%. This figure represents the movement upwards through Amazon's "Movers and Shakers" list, not necessarily an increase in unit sales by that amount.

However, lest anyone make any cracks about how easy it is to achieve a 2,800% increase when you're starting by selling a single unit, the PlayStation 3 is also representing in Amazon's bestseller list (updated hourly), overshadowing the Wii, Guitar Hero, the Nintendo DS, and World of Warcraft. As these figures are based on the most popular items on Amazon, as hundreds of thousands of gold farmers and addicts will attest, these aren't small numbers, people.

Regardless of what you think about the PlayStation 3 as a gaming, media, or jack-of-all-trades platform, there's clearly a great deal of latent demand out there, especially if a 17% price drop has the capability to drive this much of an increase in unit movements - imagine what could happen when the library fills out a bit more. It appears the console war isn't quite over yet.

As some people predicted, the console just needed a price drop to help get consumers to buy but a 2800% increase is just amazing.

Just to clarify, the PS3 did not increase sales by 2800%... It increased it's "sales rank" by that amount over a 24 hour period (i.e. at it's peak, it moved up 28 positions to first place)...

From Amazon.com:
"The Movers & Shakers index identifies, by category, the biggest gainers in sales rank at Amazon.com in the past 24 hours. For example, suppose a music item has a sales rank of 10 today, but was ranked as low as 30 yesterday. Its Movers & Shakers increase would be 200 percent."

Sales have most definitely peaked as a result of the price drop (and this is excellent news for Sony), but the 2800% figure in no way indicates an increase in how many units were sold.

How many people buy consoles from Amazon.com anyway? Wouldn't the shipping costs by large?

Good point, and I've clarified the wording to make this a little clearer.

Whoa, that's some spin Even. You almost had me convinced!

It's still a good sign that things are turning around for Sony. Of course, it now means they're loosing even more money...

They never made a profit off the hardware (and never intended to) and now with the price drop, each console sold is hurting them even more. Those games couldn't come soon enough.

@Leon

free, within the US.

all orders from Amazon over $25 can get free shipping, but it's not exactly the speediest postage, with an additional 3-5 days - so 6-10 days, within the US.

for 1 day shipping, it's $16USD + $1USD/pound weight.

I wouldn't suggest it was spin as such (many other places are reporting it as sales increase also).

Even the maths in my previous post seems wrong (still trying to figure it out), however, according to the little blurb on amazon website, it is definitely a sales ranking and not an actual units moved figure.

Yeah i read the explanation as a 1 place increase = 10% increase. So the PS3 has moved up 280 spots

Forgetting to analyse what the Amazon figures relate to actual sales, it still means one more thing, more sales.

And to think that thats just one website, I think SONY have got it quite right with the PS3. Though taking the thunder away from the Wii is no easy task.

Basic laws of supply and demand would suggest this.

This is all a case of staying power. To use these early signs of console sales as indicative of the future only shows how bored we truly are.

This isn't the first time the PS3 has reached number 1 on Amazon, so it's not some amazing feat that means sales have rocketed dramatically.

It's like pointing to Famitsu's Most Wanted list.

Was curious how these numbers compare to here (via xe.com) Old US PS3 price $599= $696.42, new PS3 price $499= $580.16. So when is it going to drop $400 in Aus?

Chuck GST on and the price ges up to $638 and chuck on whatever import taxes and sales taxes the government charges and I could see it going up to more like $700 or so as Australia charges more in taxes then the US. Although I still want the darn thing cheaper as well.

you'll never see ps3 for 400 for a long long time

PAL prices are supposed to go down soon... 17% I think.
